.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)

Main Forecast Concerns/Challenges:

1) Potential for fog/freezing fog, and an even lower potential
but nonzero chance for a brief window for freezing drizzle across
the Pikes Peak region early this morning.

2) The light to moderate, occasionally heavy, snow and blowing snow
expected across the higher terrain as well as all of the plains
later this afternoon through Sunday morning. Did adjust the winter
headlines by adding El Paso county, Crowley, and western Kiowa to
the Advisory as well as making some slight adjustments to the end
times on Sunday.

3) Potential for warning criteria snow, 6 inches or more, across the
southeast plains especially eastern Las Animas and Baca counties. If
they were to occur, at this time, these higher amounts look to be
localized. Have decided not to go with a warning at this time given
the localized nature, and with some lower confidence.

4) Potential for a more northward shift of higher qpf and snow, and
am monitoring for higher snow amounts possibly 6 inches or more
along and just south of the HWY 50 corridor. Very low confidence
with this potential at this time.

Relatively quiet early this morning, with dry conditions in place.
Skies have been on the clearer side for most locations overnight,
however, the patchy low stratus across the plains has expanded here
recently especially along the I-25 corridor. Think this will
continue to be the trend, as low level flow is expected to continue
backing to a southerly direction. So, with this stratus expansion as
well as mid/high clouds quickly on the increase from the west, think
skies will start off cloudy here today. The exception will be the far
eastern plains where sunny skies are expected to start the day,
though that will quickly change later this morning with the approach
of the mid clouds. With the stratus expanding, think any fog across
the Pikes Peak region should remain isolated. However, the
previously mentioned transition to a southerly direction could
support lowering ceilings and possible additional fog development
near the Palmer Divide. Additionally, in this setup, can't
completely rule out a small window of patchy freezing drizzle in
this same location. Setup doesn't appear overly favorable at this
time though, and with confidence low on this potential. Will
continue to keep an eye on this potential though.

Focus for this period remains with the approaching system and
widespread accumulating snow expected across much of southern
Colorado. Latest satellite imagery depicting the expected upper low
still well to the northwest of the region, with westerly flow
remaining in place. Will see this system dive south through the
morning, and quickly reach the region by midday. Increasing flow,
ascent, and moisture will allow snow to develop across the central
and southwest mountains by midday and then steadily increase into
the afternoon. Strongest ascent and focus in these locations look to
be right in the afternoon time frame with moderate, to occasionally
heavy, snow occurring during this time. Despite these expected
conditions, the low/trough is anticipated to steadily progress to
the southeast and think the window for this stronger snow will be
small. While snow will continue into tonight, forcing/focus should
lower during this time. No change to the Winter Weather Advisory for
these locations at this time. For the eastern mountains, this snow
is expected to begin by early to mid afternoon and then quickly
increase in intensity. This is as the system approaches but also as
a stronger upslope flow occurs with the arrival of a more defined
700mb low. Did increase totals in this location due to the latest
trend, with stronger focus for a longer duration. While amounts are
right around warning criteria, did not have enough confidence to go
with a warning. However, if the current trends continue, then the
day shift will have to monitor for the possibility of even higher
amounts and the need for a warning for the eastern mountains.

Snow across the plains will definitely need to be closely monitored
through the day. While there is high confidence of widespread
accumulating snow, there are some still some variability in trends
with guidance on the expected setup and snow amounts. At this time,
expect snow to spread across the I-25 corridor by mid to late
afternoon in advance of this system and strengthening isentropic
ascent. By early evening, strengthening large scale ascent owing
this approaching trough/low, persistent isentropic ascent, and
favorable upslope flow across the Pikes Peak region will allow snow
to increase in coverage and intensity over much of the plains. This
trend continues into mid to late evening, with some locations across
the far southeast plains possibly seeing a delay for the onset of
this snow. Strong forcing in place collocated within the snow growth
zone and instability expected, will allow for light to moderate,
occasionally heavy, snow to occur across the plains. This looks to
even further increase, as some FGEN will be noted with even strong
isentropic ascent. Right now, these conditions look to occur over
the far southeast plains and then steadily shift to the south. With
this expected forcing, did increase snowfall amounts over the far
southeast plains and did even contemplate changing eastern Las
Animas and Baca counties to a warning.

Right now its looking like 4 to 6 inches in this location, with
isolated amounts right around 7 inches and have decided to hold off
with an upgrade. For the remaining plains, 3 to 6 inches are
expected with the lowest amounts expected across El Paso county.
This will be as shifting flow to a more northerly direction could
limit snow amounts later in the evening. Another item that will
definitely need to be monitored during the day will be with a
northward shift of the higher qpf/snow. The NAM was initially the
only guidance showing this trend, but the HRRR has been hinting at
this possibility. Additionally, the latest SREF and GFS have begun
to hint at this trend as well. This northward shift would be due to
a more northward track of the 700mb low, which would bring the
baroclinic zone and associated forcing further north. If this were
to occur, could see higher snow amounts further to the north even up
to El Paso county. What would be concerning, is a possibility for an
axis of higher snow amounts, 6 inches or more, along and just to the
south of the HWY 50 corridor. Did inch up snow totals across this
location but not to this extent, given lower confidence still in
place. The day shift will have to see what later trends show, and
adjust accordingly. One last item that will add another hazard
tonight is the increasing winds. These increasing winds will create
blowing snow across both the higher terrain and lower terrain.

..Up and Down Weather Pattern continues through Next Week...

Sunday-Sunday night...Latest models are coming in a tad further
north with upper low across across northeastern New Mexico at 12Z
Sunday, leading to the potential for ongoing snowfall across the
southeastern tier of Colorado early Sunday morning, before the
system continues to lift out into the southern high plains with all
snow ending across southeast Colorado by 18Z Sunday, as much drier
air moves across the region within subsident northwest flow aloft.
With that said, will continue winter weather advisories across the
southern tier zones through 18Z, with additional accumulations of
an inch or two passable. Otherwise, will see decreasing clouds
from west to east across the area Sunday, with breezy northerly
winds through the morning diminishing into the afternoon. With the
expected snowfall, have lowered blended model temperatures across
the plains, with highs mainly in the 30s, and in the 20s and 30s
across the higher terrain. With dry air in place, overnight lows
will be on the chilly side in the single digits and teens across
the plains, and mainly in the single digits above and below zero
across the higher terrain.

Monday-Tuesday...Models across coming into better agreement of the
next system digging across the Rockies, though continue to differ on
strength and location, though the GFS solution has been trending
towards the stronger and further south EC solutions, leading to
better chances of more widespread, albeit light snowfall. At any
rate, continued with the blended model solution bringing increasing
pops across the ContDvd Monday morning, with chance pops spreading
east across the high mountain through the eastern mountains and
plains Monday afternoon through Monday night before diminishing from
west to east once again through the day Tuesday. Best chances of
seeing light to moderate accumulations will be for areas over and
higher terrain through the day Monday, with the potential for seeing
more accumulating snowfall across the southeast mountains and the
southern tier of Colorado, especially if model trends continue to
indicate another closed low developing across northeastern New
Mexico Monday night. As for temperatures, Monday highs to warm back
to near seasonal levels, though did lower highs across the far
southeast plains with expected snow cover persisting. Temperatures on
Tuesday will likely cool back to below normal levels, with the
passing system and its associated cold front.

Wednesday-Friday...Roller coaster weather pattern looks to continue
with warmer and drier weather expected Wednesday with upper ridging
building back across the Rockies. This ridging is short lived as
more Pacific energy is progged to dig across the Rockies Thursday
and Friday, bringing more chances of precipitation, greatest over
and near the higher terrain.

.AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Sunday morning)

Another active period expected across the TAF sites, with low
ceilings, dense fog, snow, and increasing winds expected. In the
near term, keeping an eye on lower ceilings impacting COS and PUB,
while ALS remains VFR. At this time, MVFR ceilings are occurring
at PUB with COS noting IFR and LIFR conditions. Additionally,
dense fog has developed across COS. Expect these ceilings to
remain in place this morning, with COS continuing to observe the
lowest conditions. Should see fog improve by late morning or
midday, but the lower ceilings may continue into the afternoon.
Snow will spread across the TAF sites later this afternoon into
the evening, and continue through the period. While snow is
expected across all of the sites, the strongest snow with lowest
vis will occur across COS and PUB. PUB may actually observe a
longer duration of the stronger snow. Did bring vis down to 1sm,
but could see periods of vis below 1 mile. Snow should diminish
later tonight, but will likely continue through the period along
with the lower ceilings. Expect lighter winds for much of today
but as winds shift to the north later this evening, will see
strengthening winds and gusts that will last through the period.

central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Dense fog and freezing fog, with visibility less than one half mile,
is likely around the Palmer Divide this morning. Additionally,
patchy freezing drizzle with locally slippery conditions are
possible.

Another round of snow is expected across southern Colorado today and
tonight. Snow will develop along the Continental Divide this
morning, with snow continuing and spreading east across the high
mountain valleys into the eastern mountains and plains through
late this afternoon. Snowfall is expected to continue across
the area this evening before diminishing from northwest to
southeast into Sunday morning. Light to moderate, occasionally
heavy, snow combined with developing gusty northerly winds,
will likely create hazardous travel conditions across southern
Colorado today and tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday

Another round of light to moderate snowfall will be possible
across south central and southeast Colorado Monday and Monday
night. Snow looks to once again develop along with Continental
Divide Monday morning, with snow continuing and spreading east
across the high mountain valleys into the eastern mountains and
plains through late Monday afternoon. Snowfall is expected to
continue across the area Monday evening before diminishing from
northwest to southeast into Tuesday morning.

Yet another round of snow will be possible for mainly the higher
terrain later Thursday and Friday.
