.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday)
Issued at 326 PM MST Wed Jan 15 2020

Currently...generally clear skies continue across much of southern
Colorado this afternoon, with a few high cirrus along the New Mexico
border into southwest Kansas.  Southeasterly low level winds have
kept us cooler today with mostly mid 40s across the Plains.

Tonight...upper level ridging is forecast to transition across
Colorado tonight with flow aloft becoming southwesterly by morning.
Dry conditions will prevail, however, mid and upper level cloud
cover is forecast to increase overnight into Thursday morning.  Lows
tonight are forecast to fall into the 20s across the region, while
the San Luis Valley falls into the single digits.

Thursday...the upper level ridge is forecast to move east into the
Missouri Valley by the afternoon, while an upper disturbance out of
the Desert Southwest lifts northward into Colorado by early
afternoon.  This will spread snow into the San Juan and southern
Sangre de Cristo Ranges by late morning.  Snow accumulations over
these ranges will generally range 2 to 5 inches through the
afternoon hours with the heaviest snowfall expected over the San
Juan Range.  Lower elevations of the Rio Grande Valley and the
southern portion of the San Luis Valley will likely see snow by mid
to late afternoon.  Minor accumulations are possible through the
late afternoon.

There is some uncertainty over the Plains.  Most high-res model
solutions bring an area of precipitation northward out of New
Mexico, impacting Las Animas, Baca and Prowers Counties by mid
afternoon.  Precipitation type will be the main question.
Temperatures over this area are expected to remain in the lower 30s
through the afternoon.  Warm air advection is forecast aloft, edging
into far southeast Colorado.  This will likely cause a mixture of
precipitation types, including the potential for areas of freezing
rain.  Would not be surprised to see a whole mix bag during the
afternoon hours, with areas of snow, rain and freezing rain, mainly
over eastern Las Animas, Baca and Prowers Counties.  Roads could
become slick and icy, and trees could be damaged where ice does
happen to accumulate.  At this time, the greatest potential for
freezing rain will be late afternoon to early evening before the
threat transitions east of Colorado.  Given the uncertainty, have
foregone highlights on the Plains, but future shifts will have to
watch the latest trends in model guidance.

Elsewhere on the Plains, not expecting any precipitation north of a
Walsenburg to Lamar line.  Just cloudy and cool conditions expected
with highs in the 40s. Mozley

.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Wednesday)
Issued at 326 PM MST Wed Jan 15 2020

Main forecast concerns/challenges are with snow continuing over
much of the higher elevations Thursday night into Friday with
significant snowfall amounts appearing likely across the southwest
mountains, potential for varying precip type over far southeast
CO Thursday evening, and windy conditions with fire weather
concerns on Friday.

Focus will still be on the upper level trough swinging across the
western CONUS at the start of the period with isentropic ascent
ramping up out ahead of it, and precip likely spreading across a
good portion of the central CONUS. As was mentioned in the short
term forecast, precip chances across the Plains Thursday afternoon
will continue into the evening. At least a small window of light
precip development remains possible over far southeast CO, and
maintained low chance pops in the forecast. Will keep an eye on
this precip development Thursday evening as well as a varying
precip type will still be favored, mainly freezing rain. Forecast
soundings still showing warming lower levels Thursday evening,
which would be enough to support liquid. With surface temps below
freezing, light freezing rain would remain a threat. Have
maintained light freezing rain in the forecast but with some lower
confidence to the extent and duration of this ptype, kept wording
limited. Highest threat for this light freezing rain Thursday
evening is across locations along and southeast of a line from
Kim to Brandon. Precip chances across this location lower
significantly after the midnight time frame.

Snow chances still look to increase for the southwest mountains
Thursday night, with heavy snow becoming likely given the
southwest flow setup. Will likely see snow development/intensity
increase, as large scale ascent increases with the arrival of the
upper level trough during this time. With confidence growing for
the potential for significant snowfall amounts, did go with a
winter storm watch for the Eastern San Juan mountains. Heavy snow
beginning Thursday and lasting into Friday will support snow
amounts in the 10 to 20 inch range, and issued the watch for this
period. Additionally winds will likely ramp up across the higher
elevations Thursday night into Friday, with blowing snow and
significantly reduced vis a concern. Expect the southern Sangre de
Cristo range to see additional snowfall amounts during this
period as well, though snow amounts at this time are appearing to
be lower with a winter storm watch not warranted at this time.
However, could see advisory snowfall amounts Thursday night into
Friday. Will begin to see snow development focus across the
central mountains on Friday as flow shifts. Snowfall amounts are
still not appearing to be as high in this location.

Upper level trough axis and attendant deepening surface low swing
across CO Friday, with windy conditions appearing likely across
all of the region. Guidance still varying to the extent of the
winds/gusts on Friday, but speeds and gusts approaching warning
criteria for both the higher and lower elevations are appearing
possible. At this time, confidence is somewhat higher for these
possible stronger winds over the higher elevations. Across the
lower elevations, the window for warning criteria winds looks to
be small and confined during Friday afternoon. Given the strong
flow, deep mixing, and possible low RH values, fire weather
concerns remain for this period. Did lower dewpoints and RH values
Friday afternoon, but with these values still not appearing to
support Red Flag criteria. Nonetheless, the stronger winds could
offset the lacking RH values, still producing fire weather
concerns. Will continue to monitor this potential and possible
fire weather headlines for Friday.

Northwesterly flow anticipated on the backside of this system
into the weekend with generally dry conditions expected. Isolated
snow showers are possible though over the central mountains during
this time. Next system of interest to possibly move across the
region looks to be sometime early next week.

Snow will move into the southwest mountains Thursday afternoon,
and is expected to bring significant snowfall to the Eastern San
Juan Mountains through Friday. Snow will also affect the Sangre de
Cristo Mountains, especially the Southern Sangre de Cristo
Mountains, mainly Thursday night and Friday, with a few to several
inches expected. Thursday night, there will be the potential for
some freezing drizzle or freezing rain over the southeast corner
of Colorado, mainly affecting Baca and portions of Prowers
Counties.

The next chance for snow is expected along the Continental Divide,
beginning on Tuesday.
