Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop across the higher terrain early this afternoon, with storms spreading east across the I-25 Corridor between 3 pm and 6 pm and continuing out across the far southeast plains through 10 pm. The best chances of severe weather will be along and east of the I-25 Corridor and along and north of the Highway 50 Corridor. Heavy rainfall will also be possible with storms today, leading to the potential for localized flash flooding. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday Isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected Saturday afternoon over the mountains and mainly adjacent areas. A few of these storms, especially ones that develop over the plains, will have the chance to become strong to severe. Lightning, wind gusts of up to 70 mph and golf ball sized hail will be the primary risks under the strongest storms. Warm temperatures, low relative humidity, gusty winds, and isolated dry lightning are expected over the San Luis Valley Saturday afternoon, which will lead to areas of critical fire weather conditions. At 301 PM MDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm near Palmer Lake, or 24 miles north of Colorado Springs, moving southeast at 10 mph. Half inch hail and winds in excess of 40 mph will be possible with this storm. Locations impacted include... Monument and Palmer Lake. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.
