Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pueblo CO 1146 PM MDT Fri Oct 9 2020 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Saturday) Issued at 251 PM MDT Fri Oct 9 2020 A ridge axis is currently overhead and is expected to pass by this evening, which will lead to a more southwesterly flow regime in the upper levels for tomorrow afternoon. Dry conditions are expected throughout the short term forecast period. A Red Flag Warning has been issued from 12PM to 8PM for Baca, Bent, Prowers, Kiowa, and El Paso Counties. Relative humidity values are expected to be below 15% across all of the lower elevations, but the strongest winds are expected over the aforementioned counties. The enhanced wind speeds are from tightening surface pressure from the interactions from what will be Tropical Storm or Depression Delta, a surface lee cyclone, and two synoptic systems to the north. Winds will be from the south- southeast throughout the day. Near critical fire weather conditions are possible over the southwestern portions of the San Luis Valley. Low temperatures will be similar to what they have been, upper 30s to low 40s over the plains, the upper 20s to 30s over the mountain valleys, and the 20s over the mountains. Tomorrow's high temperatures are a little more uncertain over the plains, which will depend on the orientation of the mid-level winds. The forecast is for the mid 80s over the I-25 corridor, with a bust potential for higher temperatures (upper 80s) if the winds are from the southwest aloft instead of from the south. The far eastern plains will be in the upper 80s, the mountain valley will be in the mid to upper 70s, and the mountains will be in the 40s. .LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Friday) Issued at 251 PM MDT Fri Oct 9 2020 Upper trough swings through the nrn Rockies and into the nrn plains Sunday afternoon/evening, with track of the system too far north to produce much more than a few rain/snow showers over the central mts late in the day. Main story Sunday will be strong winds and high fire danger, as band of strong wly winds (g30-40 kts) push across the area during the day, followed by a few hrs of strong north winds (g35-45 kts) behind the cold front Sun evening. Humidity drops off below 15 percent over most lower elevations, while higher terrain of the eastern mountains sees values fall into the 15-20 percent range. Have hoisted a fire weather watch for most of the area for Sun afternoon and evening, though kept zones along the Continental Divide out of the highlight as humidity there should stay above critical thresholds. Probably just enough mid level cooling to trim a few degf of of Sun max temps, though most locations will end up well above average another day. In general, nudged winds upward and dewpoints downward Sunday from NBM guidance, as blended models tend to underplay mixing and drying in strong wly wind situations.
