Have allowed the Red Flag Warning in effect for this evening to
expire this past hour, as conditions continue to improve. RH
values will likely stay relatively low, 15 to 25 percent, over the
next 2-3 hours given the warmer temps and low dewpoints still in
place. Additionally, surface low across eastern CO will allow
winds to remain gusty this evening and quite possibly for a good
portion of tonight, especially over far eastern CO.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Tuesday)

...More critical fire weather across southern CO on Tuesday...

Moderate swly upper flow across Colorado again today, with most mid
level moisture suppressed to our south across NM. Have see just some
very weak/isolated convection along the Raton Mesa and northward
into Las Animas County this afternoon, and will continue some low
pops for at partially/mostly dry tsra along the NM border into the
evening. Winds have be a little slow to pick up this afternoon,
though many locations were finally near or above Red Flag criteria
as of 21z, and with models suggesting gustiness continuing into the
evening, will keep highlight going until expiration at 02z. Winds
diminish overnight, with another mild night expected at most
locations. On Tuesday, nwrn U.S. upper trough reloads, with flow
aloft gradually increasing and taking on a more s-sw component
across the area as trough deepens. Models hint at a subtle return of
mid level moisture by afternoon, leading to a slight upturn in weak
convection over much of the high terrain by late day. Low levels
remain dry, suggesting most tsra will be dry, producing only
lightning, wind and sprinkles rather than any meaningful rainfall.
Given increasing winds aloft and deep mixing, expect another day of
fairly widespread critical fire weather conditions, and will upgrade
current watch to a Red Flag Warning for much of the area. Max temps
again on the hot side, with readings little changed from the past
couple days.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Monday)

...Critical fire weather conditions continue into Wednesday...

Tuesday night into Wednesday...More of the same is expected as a
broad upper-level trough remains centered over the western U.S. An
embedded shortwave is anticipated to propagate into the northern
Rockies, which will result in a southwest to northeast oriented jet
streak moving over Colorado. The stronger winds aloft will aid in
gusty southwest winds at the surface, which will bring in a drier
airmass to the region. Temperatures are also expected to be hot
again, topping out around 100 across the plains and in the 80s for
the high valleys. So, once again have hoisted a Fire Weather Watch
for Wednesday afternoon and evening, but this time for the entire
forecast area as even the mountains are expected to see critical
fire weather criteria. Turning attention elsewhere, a lee trough is
expected to develop over the plains, which is anticipated to produce
a dryline in western Kansas. That said, there is still some slim
potential for this dryline to form over far eastern Colorado as can
be seen with individual SREF members. If that does occur, there is a
better chance for showers and storms to develop in that area, some
of which could become strong to severe.

Thursday and Friday...The shortwave trough is anticipated to continue
propagating east into the northern Great Plains through the day,
sending a dry cold front through the Colorado plains during the
morning. This cold front will bring a bit of relief to the plains,
where temperatures are expected to be 10-15 degrees F cooler than
the previous few days, whereas highs in the valleys aren't expected
to change all that much. Post-frontal easterly flow is anticipated
to bring an increase of precipitation chances to the eastern and
central mountains Thursday afternoon, then to the plains overnight
into early Friday morning. Another round of precipitation is
anticipated Friday afternoon and evening, mainly across the plains
and central and eastern mountains, as another cold front is expected
to move through the region. Latest guidance continues to show CAPE
values of less than 1000 J/kg, meaning storms should be sub-severe,
but a rogue severe storm cannot be completely ruled out.

Saturday through Monday...The larger scale trough is expected to
finally push east of the area as a ridge builds to the west, which
will transition the area into northwest flow aloft. As a result,
isolated to scattered showers and storms are anticipated to develop
over the mountains each afternoon, potentially spreading to the
plains. Afternoon highs are not expected to change all that much
from the late week temps.

Critical fire weather conditions are expected in areas of the
lower elevations on Tuesday afternoon, and will again be possible
Wednesday afternoon across much of the area.

Thunderstorms are possible over the mountains and over the
eastern plains Tuesday afternoon. The storms are expected to be
sub- severe, with wind gusts up to 50 mph and small hail possible.
There will be a chance for strong to severe storms over the
eastern plains on Friday afternoon. Main impacts would be large
hail, gusty winds and frequent cloud to ground lightning.
