.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 354 AM MDT Fri May 1 2020

...Another hot day today with Red Flag conditions for the San Luis
Valley...

Currently...A relatively flat ridge of high pressure remains across
the desert southwest, with westerly flow aloft across Colorado. This
westerly flow has produced a smattering of clouds across the
forecast area overnight, as well as keeping conditions mild. As of 3
am, temps have only cooled into the mid 40s to mid 50s for the high
valleys, and 50s to lower 60s for the plains.

Today and Tonight...The flattened ridge will persist across the
region for another day, which means another day of very warm temps
and continued low humidity levels. Records temperatures today are:
ALS 78 in 2001...COS 85 in 2001...PUB 94 in 1992...and current
forecast highs will mean another record for Alamosa, and near-record
readings for Colorado Springs and Pueblo. A Red Flag Warning is in
effect for the San Luis Valley for this afternoon, and feel this is
warranted since models are indicating gusty winds developing in the
Valley by mid to late afternoon. Other areas will certainly be hot
and dry, but frequent gusty winds strong enough to meet criteria are
a question.

There is some hope of a few high-based showers and storms developing
by mid afternoon over the Rampart Range and Palmer Divide, but the
main concern from any storms that do develop will be gusty erratic
winds and cloud to ground lightning. Little to no pcpn will likely
reach the ground.

High temps today will climb into the upper 70s to lower 80s for the
high valleys, and mid 80s to lower 90s for the plains. Moore

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday)
Issued at 354 AM MDT Fri May 1 2020

Sat morning, behind the front over the southeast plains, there is
the potential for low clouds although the NAM has more moist low
level conditions than the GFS and ECMWF, and has some light precip
forecast.  For now, will consider the NAM to be the outlier and will
not got with precip and widespread low clouds. In the afternoon, the
NAM still has the potential for low clouds over the far southeast
plains, with low level east winds over all of the southeast plains
and I-25 corridor and higher CAPE values pinned up against and near
the east slopes of the eastern mtns.  On the other hand, the GFS has
low level east winds over the far eastern plains, with stronger west
winds over the southern I-25 corridor. The GFS shows a ribbon of
higher CAPE values in the late afternoon from El Paso County, to
Kiowa and Prowers Counties, then shifting south through the far
southeast plains counties. Currently SPC has a marginal risk of
severe storms from El Paso County, southeastward to then cover all
of the far southeast plains. The mtn and high valley areas should
see breezy westerly winds on Sat, while the high valleys and lower
elevations of the Sangre de Cristo mtns see min RH values below 15%.
 There is already a Fire Weather Watch in effect for Sat afternoon
and evening for the San Luis Valley, which still looks good, but
current model forecast data indicates dry and windy conditions
meeting critical fire weather criteria over the lower elevations of
fire zone 225 (the Sangre de Cristos), and so will issue a Watch for
this zone as well. Sat afternoon it looks like showers/tstms could
occur over the central mtns and the Pikes Peak area and El Paso
County.  Then in the evening, much of the southeast plains could see
scattered showers/tstms.  The NAM MOS guidance for high temps across
the southeast plains on Sat is the outlier, with much cooler temps
than NBM, GFS, and EC.  Will go warmer than NAM guidance but much
cooler than today.  Highs Sat should mostly be in the 70s to lower
80s over the plains, with 70s in the high valleys and mostly 60s in
Teller County.

Westerly flow aloft is expected over the area on Sun, with dry
conditions across southern CO, although there could be a few late
afternoon tstms over the Palmer DVD. Temps over the plains rebound
on Sun, with 80s over the plains, and 70s in the high valleys, and
upper 60s to lower 70s in Teller County. Drier low levels can be
expected over the southeast plains on Sun, with min RH values along
the I-25 corridor and in the high valleys, expected to be 15% or
lower.  The far southeast plains should have higher min RH values.
Critical fire weather conditions will again be a concern for Sun,
with current forecast conditions indicating the potential for
widespread high fire danger in the San Luis Valley, the lower
elevations of the Sangres, the southern I-25 corridor and portions
of Fremont County.  To avoid confusion with the current fire weather
highlights that are in effect, will hold off on issuing a Watch for
these areas for Sun.

Mon looks like another dry day across southern CO, with highs that
are similar to those on Sun.  It also looks like there could again
be widespread high fire danger with low RH values and breezy
conditions.

A disturbance is forecast to move across the area Mon night and
early Tue, and some showers could occur, mainly over the eastern
plains.  This system will bring a cool-down for Tue and a likely a
break from high fire danger.  The cooler temps continue on Wed,
along with lower fire danger.  There could be a few showers/tstms i
the afternoon and early evening over the central and eastern mtns
and portions of the I-25 corridor.

A front is forecast to move through the eastern plains Thu as a
system moves thru the northern plains states.  Currently the
National Blend of Models shows the potential for showers/tstms over
the mtns, high valleys and I-25 corridor on Thu.

Issued at 1130 AM MDT Fri May 1 2020

At KALS, VFR conditions are expected over the next 24 hours with
gusty winds developing this afternoon into the evening. Winds then
diminish for the remainder of the forecast period.

At KCOS and KPUB, VFR conditions are expected for the next 24 hours.
Gusty southerly winds are being reported at KCOS at this hour, and
are anticipated to continue into the evening. Isolated storms along
and near the Palmer Divide remain possible later this afternoon, so
left VCTS in the KCOS TAF for a few hours from 21 to 02z. A front
moving through late tonight is expected to bring gusty northerly
winds and cloud cover to both KCOS and KPUB through around daybreak
tomorrow.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

Isolated high-based thunderstorms are likely to develop across
the Rampart Range and the Palmer Divide by midafternoon, and last
into the evening. The main threats from any storms that do develop
will be gusty erratic winds up to 40 mph, and cloud to ground
lightning.

High fire danger will spread across the San Luis Valley this
afternoon where gusty winds, low humidity values, and dry vegetation
will lead to conditions favorable for rapid rates of fire growth and
spread. Even where winds are lighter, low relative humidity values
will promote efficient fire growth and extra care should be taken to
avoid fire starts today.

Temperatures will be unseasonably warm across all of southern
Colorado with record to near record high temperatures expected.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday

High fire danger is expected on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. On
Saturday, mainly the San Luis Valley and lower elevations of the
Sangre de Cristo Mountains will see high fire danger. Then on
Sunday and Monday, high fire danger may be more widespread,
covering the San Luis Valley, the lower elevations of the Sangre
de Cristo and Wet Mountains, portions of the I-25 corridor and
Fremont County.

Thunderstorms will be possible Saturday afternoon in the central
mountains, the Pikes Peak region and El Paso and Fremont Counties.
Storms will then spread to the eastern plains Saturday evening.
The main storm risks will be strong wind gusts and lightning, but
one or two storms over the plains could see hail around 1 inch in
diameter. Monday evening, isolated thunderstorms will be possible
across the southeast plains. Tuesday through Thursday there could
be some isolated storms over the eastern mountains and portions
of the I-25 corridor, with the main risks being strong wind gusts
and lightning.
