Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pueblo CO 1110 AM MDT Sun Apr 5 2020 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 415 AM MDT Sun Apr 5 2020 ...Critical Fire Weather Conditions expected today for most of the lower elevations of southern CO... Colorado will remain under southwest flow aloft today with well established lee side surface low progged to deepen and shift slightly eastward this afternoon and evening. Breezy southwest winds will spread from the mountains into the lower elevations during the afternoon bringing substantially warmer temperatures than yesterday as they warm into the 70s to near 80 across the plains, 60s for the valleys and 40s and 50s across the mountains with 30s above timberline. Dew points will drop off as southwesterlies kick in yielding relative humidity values below the critical 15 percent threshold for Red Flag Conditions. Current Red Flag Warning area and timing still looks good. Am getting some spotty critical fire weather conditions across southern El paso and Fremont counties, but given the recent snow and reports of up to 0.30 of liquid in these areas, think a day more of drying may be needed before fuels become critical. Also conditions do look spotty and limited in duration across these zones as well. Another area which may be hard pressed to make Red Flag criteria will be central and northern Pueblo county where winds may be delayed until late afternoon. Southern portions of the county should see winds kick in earlier and make the required 3 hour duration so will leave the highlight in place. But for those in Pueblo it may take some time for the gusty winds to be realized. Winds will decrease this evening and a warm night is in store with the lee trough keeping westerly winds going along the lower eastern slopes of the southeast mountains and I-25 corridor. Pockets along the I-25 corridor and far southeast plains may see lows in the 40s. -KT .LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday) Issued at 415 AM MDT Sun Apr 5 2020 ...Fire Weather Concerns Through Tuesday... Monday and Tuesday...A strong upper low pressure system centered off the West Coast will slowly drop south along the CA coastline through Tue. This will keep CO dry with above normal temps both days, as well as creating strong southwest winds across the region. Both days are expected to be prime critical fire weather days. The current watch for Mon will remain for the time being, but will likely get upgraded later today. In addition, another watch will probably be issued for Tue. Look for high temps both days in the 60s for the high valleys, and 70s to around 80F for the plains. Wednesday...Long range models agree on moving the upper low onshore across the CA Baja and into southwestern AZ Wed morning, though the GFS is slightly faster as compared to the EC. This movement will draw moisture up into western CO to the Continental Divide by Wed aftn, with an overall decrease in wind strength, then pcpn spreads across all of the forecast area through the night. Maximum temps are forecast to climb into the upper 50s to mid 60s for the high valleys, and mid 60s to mid 70s for the plains. Thursday through Saturday...Model discrepancies become apparent as the weekend nears, with the GFS fast tracking the upper low across northern NM on Thu, while the EC shows the low lingering near the Four Corners for a bit before diving south then east across NM on Fri. Therefore, the forecast for Thu and Fri is still somewhat questionable though there will likely be some mt snow as well as showers and thunderstorms for the plains on one or both of those days. Once the system pushes east out of the area, brisk northwest flow aloft settles in with another shortwave sweeping across the Rockies and keeping a threat of some snow for the central mts. Keeping that in mind, made very few changes to the extended procedure output. Thu will be the coolest day in the extended period with highs in the 40s and 50s for most locations. Fri and Sat start to trend back towards warmer readings, but this will depend heavily on the actual track and movement speed of the upper low.
