.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 539 AM MDT Mon May 18 2020

Main forecast concerns/challenges are with high fire danger expected
this afternoon into the evening, mainly for the mountains and
interior valleys.

Dry and relatively quiet early this morning, as upper level ridge is
in place. Rising heights will be the trend today as stronger and
more energetic flow stays well west, tied to an upper level low
approaching the west coast. Today should finally be a day lacking
precip development, as rising heights with decent capping and very
dry air will be in place. Some of the CAMs this morning are hinting
at some very isolated and brief precip development late this
afternoon across the plains, along lee trough and dry line. While
there will likely be surface focus, large scale pattern and dry air
will limit any precip development today. If anything were to
develop, think it would be mainly virga or at the most, a sprinkle
or two.

Maintained current Red Flag Warning in effect this afternoon into
the evening for the mountains and interior valleys. The previously
mentioned dry air expected today will be most noted in this
location, and maybe for parts of the far southern I-25 corridor west
of the dry line. Dewpoints in the 20s and 30s expected to quickly
fall by around midday into the afternoon, falling to the low teens
and single digits. With well above normal warmth still anticipated
today, RH values are expected to fall in the single digits this
afternoon. These low RH values with increasing southwest winds
gusting to 35 to 40 mph will create high fire danger this afternoon
into the evening. Once again, no real big changes to the Red Flag
Warning in effect, other than to add in another zone near the
Walsenburg area. Think this location will mark the farthest eastward
extend of driest air along with gusty southwest winds. For locations
along the I-25 corridor and to the east, slightly lower winds/gusts
and higher RH values will reside.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday)

Not many adjustments required from earlier meteorological reasoning,
as longer term CWA forecast generally characterized by basically
above seasonal temperatures, gusty winds at times, relatively dry
conditions and fire weather concerns nearly each day.

The overall gusty wind and dry(outside of primarily isolated
showers and thunderstorms at times) south-southwesterly upper flow
pattern over the CWA of Tuesday into Wednesday night is expected
to transition to a basically dry southwesterly to zonal upper
pattern from Thursday into the weekend.

Meanwhile, the southeastern Colorado surface lee-side troughing
pattern from Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday night is expected
to give way to a northerly component surface surge Thursday,
which has the potential of increasing precipitation chances over
primarily far northern and eastern sections of the CWA from
Thursday afternoon into Thursday night.

Then, surface lee-side troughing returns to southeastern Colorado
from Friday into Saturday in advance of next system impacting
southern Colorado with a potential for increased precipitation
chances Sunday.

As touched upon earlier, near critical to critical fire weather
conditions at times will be possible nearly each day of the longer
term(favoring but not limited to San Luis Valley locations). At
this time, is still appears that the highest potential for more
widespread fire weather concerns during the longer term should
be realized Wednesday and Saturday.

Warmest temperatures during the longer term are expected Tuesday
and Wednesday, with coolest temperatures projected Thursday and
Sunday.

Finally, the highest potential for more widespread gusty winds
over the CWA during the longer term should be realized from
Wednesday into Wednesday evening and then again from Friday
afternoon into Saturday.

VFR conditions are expected over KALS, KCOS, and KPUB throughout
the forecast period. Gusty winds are expected over all of the
forecast point this afternoon, with the strongest winds over
KALS. With how dry it has been, there may be the chance of lower
visibility due to blowing dust. Later tomorrow afternoon,
precipitation chances increase over KCOS and KPUB, but confidence
is low that the terminal sites will be impacted.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

High fire danger is expected today mainly over the mountains and
interior valleys, as gusty southwest winds and low relative humidity
develop this afternoon into early evening. There may be an
isolated non-severe thunderstorm develop over the southern I-25
corridor. Main risk will be dime sized hail, wind gusts up to 40
mph, and cloud to ground lightning.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

Many southern Colorado locations will experience elevated fire
danger concerns from Tuesday into the weekend, with the most
widespread near critical to critical fire weather conditions
expected Wednesday and Saturday.

In addition, isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms,
capable of producing hazardous lightning, small hail, gusty winds
and brief periods of moderate rainfall are possible over primarily
select eastern locations from Tuesday into Saturday with an
increase of shower and thunderstorm activity anticipated Sunday.
