Warm weather with passing high clouds will continue through the rest of today. Beginning Sunday, temperatures will start to cool as a strong fall weather system moves into the region. The potential for showers and possibly a few thunderstorms will increase Sunday evening, mainly across Gila and Pinal counties, before potentially spreading into eastern portions of Maricopa County on Monday. Across southeast California and southwest Arizona, winds will become windy at times on Monday. Temperatures for Monday and Tuesday will be at least 10 degrees below normal, with notably cool mornings Tuesday and Wednesday. Drier and warmer conditions are then expected during the latter half of next week. && .DISCUSSION... Considerable high cloudiness has spread throughout the region over the past 12 hours, out ahead of a weak low off the California coast and within a strengthening upper level jet. Although the track is still a little uncertain, there is now higher forecast confidence in less moisture getting entrained into the low as it tracks southward through Arizona on Monday and for the system to be quite progressive. As the system approaches from the north on Sunday, winds will begin to increase leading to a breezy latter half of the day and wind gusts up to 30 mph. Temperatures should still be on the warmer side as highs are forecast to still top out in the middle 80s. Later in the day Sunday, increasing forced ascent may allow for some isolated to scattered showers and possibly a thunderstorm in a more favored upslope area east of a Casa Grande to Tonto Basin line. This chance for rain will persist through Sunday night and likely increase over time as the low center eventually moves into northern Arizona by around 12Z Monday. During the daytime hours Monday, there should be periodic shower activity and maybe a few embedded thunderstorms again focused more over the eastern Arizona high terrain. There very well could be a few showers as far west as the Phoenix area on Monday, but with the low center now most likely tracking more across eastern Arizona rain chances for Phoenix have diminished considerably. This track would also mean the system will be even more progressive than previously thought and there will be less moisture available. As a result, expected QPF amounts have been lowered to barely anything for the Phoenix area to upwards of around a 1/2" to localized 3/4" over the high terrain east of Phoenix. This revised forecast should definitely curtail the potential for any flooding across burn scar areas. Although fairly unlikely at this point, any shift of the low track back to the west would increase rain chances and amounts. To the west of the low track on Monday, especially across southeast California and southwest Arizona, a southward surging cold front will usher in much drier air and windy conditions. Post-frontal wind gusts of 30-40 mph are likely at times as early as 12Z Monday down the Lower CO River Valley. These strong winds should mostly persist through the daytime hours, likely creating some patching blowing dust and localized reduced visibilities. Very chilly air behind the cold front will keep daytime highs Monday mostly in the middle 60s across our western deserts to around 70 degrees for the Phoenix area. The low is likely to shift quickly southward into southeast Arizona by late Monday night while snow levels quickly lower to just below 4000 ft by Tuesday morning. There could be a quick change over to snow across Gila Co. late Monday evening, but any lingering shower activity in the area should be quickly diminishing as dry air surges southward starting late Monday afternoon. At this time, we are not expecting anything other than a light dusting of snow late Monday across eastern Gila Co. By late Tuesday morning, the low center may already be into northern Mexico leaving a dry northerly flow across all of Arizona. Winds Tuesday may still be fairly breezy, but mainly in the morning hours as the gradient will relax quickly by Tuesday afternoon. Highs Tuesday are now looking a bit warmer due to the more progressive track of the low with readings from the lower 70s in the Phoenix area to closer to 75 degrees across our western deserts. The latter half of next week still looks be in warming trend with temperatures back to or even above normal likely by Thursday. There could also be a day or two from next Friday into the following weekend that would see highs around 90 degrees. && .AVIATION...Updated at 1800Z. South-Central Arizona including KPHX, KIWA, KSDL, and KDVT: No aviation concerns are expected through Sunday morning as light diurnal winds continue under high clouds and a few cloud decks as low as 8 kft through 21Z. Easterly 5-10 knot winds will become westerly at most sites between 20-21Z with winds remaining below 10 knots. High clouds should scatter out tomorrow morning with a period of southerly 5-10 knot crosswinds expected at KDVT and KPHX after 15-16Z. Stronger westerly wind gusts up to 20 knots are expected tomorrow afternoon ahead of a cold frontal system. Southeast California/Southwest Arizona including KIPL and KBLH: Aviation concerns will gradually increase tonight into Sunday morning as winds increase ahead of a cold front that will pass through late Sunday into Monday. Winds will generally favor southerly to southwesterly headings, with speeds remaining below 15 knots through early evening before gusts up to 20 knots occur later tonight at KIPL with downsloping westerlies. Winds will subside overnight before increasing dramatically late tomorrow morning with gusts up to 25 knots at both KIPL and KBLH. Blowing dust will be possible tonight just west of KIPL, with better chances across late tomorrow morning. && .FIRE WEATHER... Monday through Friday: Much cooler temperatures expected region-wide Monday and lasting through Wednesday. A strong weather system moving through on Monday will bring gusty winds and much drier air over southeast California and southwest Arizona. This will result in very low humidity readings (likely below 10%) by late morning and northerly winds likely gusting above 30 mph at times. This means RH and winds will likely meet critical thresholds for a period on Monday across southeast California and southwest Arizona, but temperatures will only be in the 50s to mid 60s. Wetting rains and a slight chance of thunderstorms will also be possible mainly over the eastern Arizona high terrain through Monday afternoon, possibly lingering into Monday night. Dry air will spread through the entire region by Tuesday morning. Winds will again be breezy on Tuesday, but gusts will mostly stay below 25 mph. Dry conditions will then persist through the rest of the period while temperatures gradually warm back to normal by Thursday. && .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...
