...The biggest impact continues to be the wind. We have 
cold, northerly winds dropping down from the Montana divide. The 
northerly winds have now made it through Pocatello and are 
expected to continue to move southward this afternoon through the 
evening. These northerly winds are gusting to around 30 mph, 
stronger around 40 mph, across INL. These winds most likely have 
peaked now and should gradually decrease this afternoon into the 
early evening. There is still blowing and drifting occurring 
creating hazardous conditions, especially for Highway 20 from 
Idaho Falls to the INL complex as well as for Highway 33 from 
Teton to Tetonia. These highways will continue to receive very 
impactful blowing and drifting before the winds taper off by late 
afternoon into early evening. Also, I-86 is seeing some blowing 
and drifting due to a direct cross wind though gusts are slightly 
less, around 30 mph currently. Because of the blowing and drifting
snow, have left the winter advisories and warnings out as there 
are other localized areas having impacts as well. We may be able 
to let the advisories and warnings go by late this afternoon, if 
not early evening. Driving is still hazardous with these windy 
conditions creating the blowing and drifting of snow...

The threat for travel impacts due to blowing and drifting snow is
rapidly decreasing as winds continue to decrease this evening.

...WINTER STORM ON TRACK TO IMPACT THE REGION SUNDAY INTO MONDAY...

DISCUSSION...Incoming models suggest that we will see widespread 10-
15 inch snowfall totals across the SE mountains Sunday night into
Monday along with blowing and drifting snow. In addition, a
convergence band is expected to sink south into the ERN Magic Valley
Sunday night into Monday morning possibly producing as much as 2 to
6 inches of accumulation in that region. Thus we will be upgrading
the SE mountains to warnings and adding the ERN Magic Valley to the
Winter Weather Advisory on the update this evening. This looks to be
a fairly impactful system starting out with some rain and rain-snow
mix in the valleys Sunday afternoon and then quickly rolling over to
snow Sunday night with winds ramping up into Monday. Check out the

Temperatures this afternoon have warmed quite a bit in spots as
Pocatello and Burley have both surpassed 50 this afternoon while up
the Snake Plain towards Idaho Falls temps still hovering around
freezing. These warmer temps will be short- lived as a winter storm
will impact the region beginning tomorrow and continue into the day
Monday. Winter weather advisories have been posted for all the zones
where the winter storm watch was in place as well as a few
additional zones where forecast snow totals have trended upwards a
bit. Still not out of the question that a few areas will come close
to winter storm warning criteria especially if some favorable
upslope enhancement occurs. There haven't been major changes to the
expected snowfall totals across the area. Through Monday evening
totals range from 2-5 inches across the Central Mntns (up to 8
inches at peaks/ridges above pass level), 1-3 inches in the Wood
River Valley/Lincoln County, 3-6 inches from Burley/Oakley up the
Snake Plain through Pocatello/Idaho Falls, 3-8 inches across most of
the southern highlands, Bear Lake, Caribou Highlands, and Teton
Valley, and 5- 10 inches for Fremont County, the Big Holes, Bear
River Range, and the Wayan area. These totals match up well with the
NBM and GFS/ECMWF ensemble members.
Again some isolated higher totals in all of these locations are
certainly possible with the development of any enhanced upslope or
convergence bands. In addition to the snow, gusty winds will
create the potential for areas of blowing and drifting snow. A
flash freeze on roadways remains possible as colder air associated
with this system filters into the region. The majority of the
precip is forecast to fall right along and behind the front, but
if any roads can become wet from initial rain/melting snow before
the temps drop, a rapid flash freeze of moisture on roadways may
occur. If this transpires, this may create icy and hazardous
travel conditions, especially on any untreated roads.

Wrap-around moisture will keep snow in the forecast across the SE
part of the state into Monday before gradually diminishing into the
day Tuesday.  We will remain under strong northwest flow aloft with
moisture continuing to stream into central and eastern Idaho. This
will keep the chance of snow going across the mountains, especially
where upslope in northwest flow is enhanced but even down in the
valleys as well although activity will be scattered in nature. Gusty
winds will likely produce some blowing and drifting especially in
the higher elevations. Chilly temps to start the week will gradually

Today is a relatively quiet day though we are keeping a mention of
scattered low CIG at PIH and IDA for much of the day. A more active
weather pattern is expected tonight and tomorrow with precip
anticipated at that time with the arrival of a front. SUN will see
snow showers as early as mid-morning with the rest of the sites
seeing snow the remainder of the day. Wind shear of 30 to 35 knot
has been added to the forecast overnight, prior to the arrival of
the frontal boundary tomorrow morning.  When the front does arrive,
expect a quick drop in CIGs. ND

...WINTER STORM TO IMPACT SOUTHEAST IDAHO SUNDAY AND MONDAY...

A strong Pacific storm system is forecast to move into the
northern Rockies Sunday, bringing a variety of winter weather
hazards for Sunday and Monday. First, snow is expected to begin
across the Central Mountains Sunday morning, spreading southeast
into the Arco Desert and eastern Magic Valley area by Sunday
afternoon. The snow may briefly mix with rain in the eastern Magic
Valley before temperatures cool. Snow will continue into Monday
morning, accumulating 2 to 5 inches across the Central Mountains
with locally up to 8 inches above pass level, 1 to 3 inches in
the Wood River Valley, Lincoln County, and the eastern Magic
Valley. Second, a strong cold front will blast across the region
Sunday afternoon and evening. If roads are wet, rapidly falling
temperatures behind the front may result in a flash freeze,
resulting in icy roads, especially if they are untreated. Finally,
southwest winds of 10 to 15 MPH gusting to 35 MPH are expected
Sunday afternoon across the eastern Magic Valley to Arco Desert,
shifting into the northwest at 15 to 20 MPH gusting to 35 MPH
Monday. Winds across the Central Mountains will largely be out of
the north to northwest at similar speeds at higher elevations, a
bit lower in the valleys. Winds of this magnitude may result in
areas of blowing and drifting snow.

The combination of a possible flash freeze, moderate snow, and
blowing and drifting snow may result in hazardous travel
conditions across the region, especially from Sunday evening
through Monday evening. Snow covered and icy roads and reduced
visibilities are possible.
