Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pocatello ID 733 PM MDT Mon Oct 12 2020 .DISCUSSION...A quick update this evening to allow the Wind Advisory for the evening to expire at 8 PM. Winds also look to be an issue behind the trough passage Wednesday and I have taken the liberty of adding Wednesday to the going Advisory along with some additional area across the Magic Valley. See the previous discussion below for more details. Huston Aside from the wind, it has been a fairly pleasant early fall day across much of eastern Idaho. The wind remains the biggest concern over the next few days as continued gusts of 35-45 mph, some locally higher, remain likely across much of the Snake Plain through the remainder of the afternoon today and again on Tuesday. Across the Arco Desert, some gusts over 50 have been observed as well. That being said, a wind advisory remains in place for these areas into the early evening and again for the afternoon hours tomorrow. Have seen some patchy blowing dust in spots today, namely around Roberts, but with the gusty winds continuing the next few days, the blowing dust remains something to watch for. Progressive flow aloft will remain in place the next few days as a shortwave treks north of the area during the day tomorrow bringing with it some increased cloud cover for most of the area and some precip potential across the Central Mountains and the eastern Highlands from tomorrow afternoon into Wed morning. QPF will be fairly limited with a half inch or less across the Central Mountains and one or two tenths across the eastern Highlands but nevertheless the potential for some rain showers and high elevation snow will be there through Wednesday morning. Beyond that, the area should dry out as ridging begins to build over the area into the weekend. Only concern will be the potential for some freezing temperatures early Thursday and Friday morning across the agricultural areas of eastern Idaho but we are near the end of the growing season anyways so hopefully impacts would be fairly limited but anyone with crops should be aware of a hard freeze potential Thursday morning. As we move into the weekend and early next week, there remain some differences amongst the global models with how they handle the next upper-level feature in regards to placement and timing although the GFS has trended closer towards the ECMWF over the last 12 hours which could bring some additional precip to the area. Either way, still plenty of time to watch how this feature plays out over the coming days and the current forecast relies heavily on the NBM at this time. McKaughan && .AVIATION...Pretty strong winds are the main impact today at every TAF site this afternoon. These winds, with gusts of 35 to 45 kts, will persist until 1800 hrs or so before gradually improving through 2000. Further improvement can be expected thereafter. Wind shear is expected at IDA later this evening and overnight as winds at the surface weaken out of the south. Expect at least 25 kts between 1000 and 2000 ft during these hours. At this time, shear at PIH and BYI appears weak though we should not completely rule out any chance of some shear tonight as well. A mention of showers is noted in the vicinity of DIJ this afternoon; otherwise sites should be clear of any precipitation. Cloud cover should generally be at mid or high layers; until the overnight hours where some low layer cloud will begin to sneak in. These layers should stay FEW or SCT in coverage. ND && .FIRE WEATHER...Winds this afternoon are observed with gusts ~50mph late this morning through zone 410. The forecast for this evening is to see similar conditions not only across 410 but along the ridges of 476 and 413 as well. Strong winds and wind gusts are forecast to persist over the next several afternoons; creating widespread areas gusts over 40 mph. Areas most impacted by this area East and Central Idaho zones; least impacted South Central. The upper level flow does not change through mid-week; thus keeping this wind pattern in play through at least Wednesday. There are chances for wetting rains in Central Idaho each of these afternoons, as high as 80 percent Tuesday afternoon. The remainder of Idaho zones are expected to stay dry; in fact portions of 410 Wednesday look critically dry at this time and will be a day to keep watching for fire weather concerns.
