Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pocatello ID 203 AM MDT Tue May 5 2020 .SHORT TERM...Today through Thursday night. Today will start off with some cold temperatures across the Snake Plain. We're expecting to see temperatures drop below freezing up in the Upper Snake Plain this morning. Otherwise, the region will see fair weather conditions under a broad upper ridge. However, a strong shortwave trough will make landfall late tonight. This trough will advance into southeast Idaho by Wednesday afternoon. The attendant cold front will push through around noon. Models keep most of the area dry, though some showers and maybe an isolated thunderstorm will develop over the Central Mountains. Meanwhile as the front pushes through, a strong westerly gradient will intensify with winds of 30 to 40 mph likely. This will cause some blowing dust concerns for the region, particularly along Interstate 15 around Idaho Falls. We are continuing the high wind watch for the Snake Plain, Eastern Magic Valley, and the South Central Highlands. Ridging will build back into the area on Thursday while we return to a more dry and stable weather pattern. Hinsberger .LONG TERM...Fri through Mon night. Compared to the near-term forecast this extended period is downright benign. 500mb longwave forecast is for weak upper level ridging to remain over the northern Great Basin. When putting in the short wave details, the GFS has a storm track farther south that puts the northern edge of the forecast area in the precipitation threat area. However, the ECMWF has little to no precipitation during this time. This changes a little on Mon afternoon, when both have a slight chance to low chance threat of afternoon showers and thunderstorms along that northern border with Montana. This also kicks up the wind for most of Mon. So while the Montana border is cloudy and cool. the southern 2/3 of the forecast area will be under mostly sunny/mostly clear skies and so expect a warming, although with the northwest general flow not as warm the previous warm period, with temperatures in the Snake River plain likely staying in the 70s.
