.SYNOPSIS...
A low will cross from the Carolinas off the Delmarva coast on
today. High pressure builds in on Tuesday, and then another low
pressure system will develop off the Georgia coast late
Tuesday, then quickly lift northeast near the Northeast by
Wednesday. High pressure should build in through the remainder
of the week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
For the mid day update, I adjusted forecast snow totals up
slightly in the Lehigh Valley which has been steady snow (no
mixing) for the past few hours. That being said, the back edge
of precipitation is quickly approaching the Poconos, and
precipitation should be ending within the next 3 hours in those
areas. Thus, not expecting much in the way of additional
amounts.

Through the remainder of the afternoon, expecting the mixing
line to stay close to the I-95 corridor. South and east of the
I-95 corridor, temperatures remain above freezing for the event,
and precip will be plain rain.

Low pressure departs by the end of the period, and precip
tapers off fairly quickly from west to east. With onset of CAA,
precip may end as snow, or at least a rain/snow mix.

Highs today will be in the 30s and 40s. Temperatures may begin
to fall off in the afternoon with onset of CAA.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY/...
Strong, Canadian high pressure builds south into the Upper Great
Lakes tonight and will be centered over Ontario and into western
Quebec during the day Tuesday. With CAA spreading into the region,
temperatures will drop to below normal levels. Dry conditions on tap
with sunny skies.

Lows tonight will be in the 20s and highs on Tuesday will top off in
the 30s to around 40.

One thing to watch out for tonight is for areas where it rains, wet,
untreated roadways may freeze during the overnight hours tonight
with temperatures dropping into the 20s.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Summary: Main event of the extended is the winter storm which
will impact the area Wednesday through Thursday morning, with
significant impacts expected over portions of our area. A winter
storm watch remains in effect for that time period for the I-95
corridor and points NW. After that system we stay cool and dry
through Saturday before perhaps a weak storm system approaches
on Sunday.

Meteorological Overview: The mid-lvl wave which will drive the
mid-week coastal storm has just made landfall on the Pacific
coast, and will progress eastward through the southern-tier of
the US the next couple days. The wave will deamplify somewhat,
acquire more of a negative tilt, and then rapidly move NEwrd in
the Wed-Thursday time frame (clearing our area by Thursday AM).
At the surface, strong High Pressure centered over SE Canada
will funnel cold/dry air into our region to start the extended,
while to our south an initially weak wave off the SE coast will
begin to intensify and lift NNewrd as it begins to interact with
the aforementioned shortwave and southern stream jet. The low
will approach the DE/NJ coasts Wednesday night (at roughly peak
intensity), then cut sharply ENEwrd as the shortwave deamplifies
and accelerates.

Precipitation timing: Expect light overunning precipitation to
begin progressing over the area Wednesday morning into early
afternoon, but this precipitation will likely be rather light
initially as it will have to overcome a very dry airmass.
Heavier precipitation likely moves in Wednesday afternoon into
the overnight period as the mid-lvl dynamics and the surface low
approach. Precipitation will generally come to an end SW-NE
Thursday morning as the low and shortwave pull away from the
area.

Potential impacts (segmented by geography):

North of I-78: Regardless of the exact track of the surface low
thermal profiles should be cold enough to support all snow
during the duration of the event in this region, and given a
consensus low track near/just offshore this area would still
recieve a good portion of the precipitation shield. Consequently
am currently forecasting over a foot of snow in this region,
and a slightly more inland track then consensus could result in
snow amounts in excess of 18 inches. The main bust potential for
this zone is a southern track more similar to the GFS/GEFS
which would shunt the precip shield further south and cut down
QPF/Snow amounts considerably.

NW of I-95 and South of I-78: Given the aforementioned consensus
low track, this area would currently be in the "sweet spot" for
heavy snow, as it will remain close to the zone of max
lift/moisture while also having thermal profiles cold enough to
support mostly snow. Currently have widespread 12-18 inches for
this area, with some potential for isolated even higher amounts.
The main bust potential for this area would be a NAM-like
solution verifying which would advect warm air aloft fairly far
north, and cause changeover to sleet or maybe even freezing
rain. This would cut down totals considerably, but as for now
am leaving this area as mostly snow, but the potential warm nose
aloft bears watching.

I-95 corridor: Unfortunately (for us meteorologists) the
current consensus low track would place the primary ptype
transition zone roughly in this area, with the snowfall forecast
naturally highly uncertain. Additionally it is certainly
possible ptypes could be a real mess with initial snow (due to
wet-bulbing) transitioning to mixed precip and/or rain, and then
changing back to snow at the tail end of the event. Current
fcst snow amounts range from 4-12 inches in this zone as the
final amounts will be highly dependent upon the low track, and
the strength of any warm nose aloft. Although in general the
further north and west you go, the better your chances will be
or seeing more snow and vice-versa.

Coastal NJ/Delmarva (south of New Castle County): The center of
the low will likely track close to this area, which should
result in a primarily rain event was the warm maritime airmass
prevails. That being said a bit of snow may be possible both at
precip onset, and then at the tail end... so can't rule out
some light (generally 2 inches or less) accumulations Wednesday
night into Thursday morning. The exception to this may be
Monmouth and Ocean counties which could receive considerably
more snow (current fcst is roughly 4-8 inches), as the low will
likely begin to cut more eastward before it reaches that
latitude resulting in cooler profiles. Additionally winds will
be strongest over these locations and wind gusts 40-50mph will
certainly be possible and wind headlines may be needed.

Friday-Sunday: Quiet weather is expected through Saturday as
High Pressure builds in to our west. Continued trend of previous
shift of lowering temperatures over the interior with the expectation
a decent snowpack will be present. Highs will likely struggle
to reach freezing on Friday with widespread lows in the teens
Saturday AM. Things warm a little on Sunday with some hint at a
weak coastal low and some light precipitation impacting the
area, but details are currently uncertain (and it doesn't look
overly impactful at this point).

.AVIATION /18Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Rest of today...MVFR and IFR conditions, both for ceilings and
visibility restrictions. Conditions should improve as the
precipitation ends from west to east between 20 and 00Z.
Northwesterly winds of 10 to 15 kt. High confidence in the
overall pattern, but low confidence in the timing of improving
conditions.

Tonight...VFR conditions expected with northwesterly winds less
than 10 kt. High confidence.

Tomorrow...VFR conditions expected with northwesterly winds of
10 to 15 kt. High confidence.

Outlook...

Tuesday night... Generally VFR expected. North to northeast
winds 5 to 10 knots. High confidence

Wednesday/Wednesday night...Poor flight conditions expected
with LIFR/IFR conditions expected. Rain is expected across the
S/E terminals (KACY,KMIV), Snow is expected N/W (KRDG,KABE) and
a mix of rain and snow across the i-95 corridor (KILG ne to
KTTN). NE winds sustained 15-25 kts with gusts 25-35kts
(potentially higher at KACY). Significant snow accumulations
will be possible I-95 and NW. Moderate confidence.

Thursday/Friday...Conditions improving back to VFR Thu morning and
them remaining VFR into Friday. High confidence.

.MARINE...
Northeast winds 10-15 kt this morning, becoming north and
increasing to 15-20 kt with gusts to 25 kt this afternoon on all
waters. Seas will build to 4-6 feet late, mainly on southern
ocean waters. Winds shift to the northwest tonight at 20-25 kt
with gusts to 30 kt.

Outlook...

Tuesday...Conditions fall below SCA criteria early in the morning on
DE Bay, and to below Advisory criteria on the ocean by midday.

Tuesday night...Sub SCA conditions expected

Wednesday-Wednesday night...Winds and seas quickly ramp up on
Wednesday with Gale conditions likely by Wednesday evening.
Winds could even approach storm force for a time Wednesday
night. Seas also rapidly increase on the ocean waters up to
10-13ft Wednesday night.

Thursday...Winds and seas remain elevated above SCA criteria,
but winds are expected to at least diminish below Gale criteria
by afternoon.

Thursday night through Friday...SCA conditions likely
persisting as winds/seas come down, but seas remain above 5 ft.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
With the new moon on Monday and a brief period of onshore flow ahead
of a coastal low, there could be spotty minor coastal flooding with
the high tide tonight/Monday morning. At this time, the best chance
for some minor flooding looks to be on Delaware Bay and the southern
New Jersey and Delaware Atlantic coastal sites. The uncertainty
however remains higher as flooding will depend on the strength of
the storm and also given the short duration of onshore flow.

For Wednesday into Thursday, a more widespread and significant tidal
flooding event is possible with a second-stronger coastal
storm, however the details are uncertain at this time.
