.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front will move across parts of the area tonight as low
pressure tracks just north of the US-Canadian border. Strong high
pressure then builds in over New England for Sunday and Monday.
Meanwhile, the remnants of Hurricane Delta will approach the mid-
Atlantic from the southwest and affect the area late Sunday through
Monday night. A weak cold front will move through Tuesday in the
wake of that system, followed by high pressure for Wednesday. A
stronger cold front will likely approach the area later next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
The cold front continues steady progress southward and is
showing up quite well as a narrow boundary on radar. The line of
rainfall continues to wane through the night as it runs into a
slightly drier airmass over our region. Expect an abrupt shift
to northwesterly winds with the front. Winds should gradually
then shift to more northerly and northeasterly.
Across the region, we'll keep a cloud deck associated with the
remnants of Delta. Across southern Delaware and adjacent areas
in MD, rain associated with the remnants of Delta could progress
over the region as early as late tonight (though it still looks
like the majority of the precipitation won't come until the
later half of tomorrow.
Lows tonight will be in the low 50s for the far north and
low/mid 60s for Delmarva and southern NJ.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM MONDAY/...
The high to the N across Canada will remain in place while the
moisture from the remnants of Delta will arrive from the S/SW during
the day. Clouds will thicken and rain arrives from SW to NE thru the
day. Pops increase to categorical SW and high chc N/E by late day.
The far northern areas of the southern Poconos and north-most NJ
will only get slight chc or low chc pops by late day Sunday. It will
remain cool across the region with the NE flow behind the front
(from the near term) still flowing across the region. Highs will
climb only to the low 60s for the N and upper 60s with a few low 70s
S/SE. Rainfall will not be heavy, with only .1 to .2 inches expected
for the Delmarva and SE PA areas and T to .1 for the areas N and E
of that.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Overview...
The remnants of Hurricane Delta remain on track to impact the area
from Sunday night through most of Monday. Delta has become
extratropical, with an expansive shield of rain and clouds spreading
out over the Southeast and mid-Atlantic. It will continue to track
northeastward through the rest of the weekend, in line with the
upper level steering flow. The overall forecast philosophy remains
about the same, with only some small tweaks with this cycle. After a
couple days of slowing the expected arrival of rainfall, the trend
today has been for a faster evolution, such that steady rain will
have overspread most areas by early Sunday night but may exit as
early as Monday evening. Continuing to expect a long duration but
low impact event with mostly gradual rain rates supporting more of a
beneficial rainfall than anything that would lead to flooding
concerns. 1 to 3 inches of rainfall continues to be anticipated for
most locations, generally greatest across southeast PA, northern
Delmarva, and central and southern New Jersey but with local
variations likely due to banding.
Following the departure of Delta, a weak cold front moves through on
Tuesday, with building high pressure providing a pleasant midweek
period. Later next week, a deep trough digs into the Great Lakes.
This will likely send a sharp cold front towards the region by the
end of the week, with a chance for unsettled weather and potentially
the coldest air of the season so far by next weekend. Forecast
confidence is low after midweek, and with the remnants of Delta
preceding it, mainly stayed close to the previous forecast and a
model blend. However, the overall setup over the CONUS late next
week is quite interesting with a major clash of air masses over the
East. Would not be surprising to see a storm system develop near the
East Coast as some of the 10.0z and 10.12z guidance has indicated.
Dailies...
Sunday night-Monday night... The bulk of the rainfall associated
with the remnants of Delta will occur during this time. Steady rain
should be ongoing over most of the area by early Sunday night, but
may take a little longer to move in up north. Still a fair amount of
spread in the guidance with the NAM significantly wetter than most
other models in showing some areas of 4 to 6 inch rain totals. That
seems quite aggressive in light of strong high pressure to the
northeast acting to eat away at some of the rain shield, and the
fact that the system as a whole will be deamplifying as it moves
northeast and encounters upper level ridging. So leaning away from
the NAM but blending most other guidance continues to yield
expectations for 1 to 3 inches of rain across the area. Again, the
big high to the northeast and the gradual deamplification of the
system at upper levels will work against higher rain totals.
However, a strong easterly low level jet (40 to 50 kt) combined with
the lingering presence of the weak frontal boundary from Saturday
night could lead to a period of enhanced rain rates late Sunday
night and Monday morning. PWATs also rise to an impressive 1.5 to 2
inches, near the observed maximum for this time of year per SPC
sounding climatology. So plenty of moisture to work with. While the
majority of rain may come in a 6 to 8 hour period when the low level
jet moves through, the overall long duration and antecedent dryness
should preclude flooding concerns outside of common nuisance issues
like ponding on roadways. With the faster timing trend today, rain
should decrease in intensity and become more showery late Monday and
especially Monday night, when it may shut off completely. A tight
temperature range through this period with little more than 5 to 8
degrees in variation between the lows Sunday night and Monday night
and Monday's high.
Tuesday-Tuesday night... A weak cold front moves through during the
day on Tuesday, associated with low pressure far to our northwest
over Canada. Being so far displaced from its parent low, not a lot
of forcing or cold air associated with this front. Current timing
suggests the best chance of a rain shower would be during the first
half of the day, with dry weather and clearing skies likely for the
afternoon, and temperatures above normal, in the low 70s. Overnight,
somewhat cooler air starts to drain in and we fall back towards
seasonal norms.
Wednesday-Thursday... Behind the front, high pressure builds in for
Wednesday, which will be a dry and still mild day with highs near 70
and a seasonably cool overnight. The spread in model guidance widens
by Thursday. The general theme will be a robust trough digging into
the Great Lakes in the wake of a potent surface low cutting to our
northwest. This will send a sharp cold front towards the region.
Right now, seems likely the front will hold off long enough to keep
Thursday dry and warm with increasing SW winds. The GFS, which
previously had been faster with the front, slowed down some on the
10.12z run which adds some confidence to a dry and warm forecast for
Thursday.
Thursday night-Saturday... A lot of uncertainty for the end of the
week, as there is low confidence in the evolution of the previously
mentioned frontal passage. The front may move through by Thursday
night, but may also slow down or stall near the coast and serve as a
focus for coastal low development. Much too early for any detail
here but expecting an opportunity for some unsettled weather, and
eventually a more substantial cooldown once that front moves through.

.AVIATION /06Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Rest of Tonight...VFR is expected overnight trending towards
deteriorating flight conditions towards daybreak. Ceilings are
expected to gradually lower with MVFR ceilings possible after
at KMIV and KACY, but all other TAF sites should stay VFR
through 10Z. Winds should stay light (less than 10kt), but will
abruptly shift from southwesterly to northwesterly and
eventually northerly as a cold front evening makes it through
during the overnight hours. Moderate confidence on specific
timing.
Sunday...Conditions will continue to deteriorate as ceilings
lower to MVFR across the region with IFR ceilings are possible
especially from KPHL southward, mostly after 18Z. Some
visibility restrictions to MVFR conditions are possible with
rain showers, primarily after 15Z. Winds will gradually shift to
northeasterly around 10 kts. Gusts up to 15kts will be possible
generally during the afternoon and mainly for ACY. Medium
confidence on the overall pattern, but low confidence on timing
details.
Outlook...
Sunday night-Monday night... Mainly sub-VFR conditions expected due
to rain with IFR likely prevailing. Winds mainly E at 10 to 15 kt,
becoming light SE or light and variable Monday night. Some gusts of
25 to 30 kt are possible late Sunday night and Monday especially
along the coast. Moderate confidence.
Tuesday-Tuesday night... Sub-VFR will likely continue into early
Tuesday, but trends will be for improvement to VFR through the day
and continued VFR overnight. Winds gradually shifting from SW to W
to NW at 5 to 10 kt. Moderate confidence.
Wednesday-Wednesday night... VFR. Light westerly winds becoming
light and variable overnight. High confidence.
Thursday-Thursday night... Mainly VFR. SW wind 10 to 15 kt becoming
NW overnight. Moderate confidence.

.MARINE...
Southwesterly wind gusts up to 20 kt are possible overnight. A
cold front which is expected to arrive early Sunday morning will
bring an abrupt shift to northwesterly winds. Gusts near 25 kt
may be possible once the cold front arrives, but at this point,
expect winds to stay just below SCA criteria. Winds will
gradually shift to northerly and then northeasterly through the
day on Sunday.
Outlook...
Sunday night-Monday night... On the Atlantic coastal waters, marine
headlines are likely through much of this period. The most impactful
conditions are expected off of northern and central New Jersey.
Easterly winds will increase Sunday night with gusts of around 35 kt
expected late Sunday night through Monday afternoon. Still some
uncertainty in just how strong the winds will get but have issued a
Gale Watch to cover this potential. In addition, seas will build to
7 to 9 ft during the day Monday. For the southern New Jersey and
Delaware coastal waters, winds will not be as high, but by late
Sunday night and through Monday, gusts of up to 25 kt and seas of 5
to 6 ft will result in the need for an SCA. On Delaware Bay, SCA
conditions are possible Sunday night into Monday, but should fall
below advisory levels by Monday night.
Tuesday-Wednesday... Mainly sub-SCA conditions expected with seas
falling below 5 ft on the Atlantic coastal waters by Tuesday morning
or early afternoon. Southwest winds Tuesday becoming northwest
overnight and Wednesday at 10 to 15 kt. Seas 3 to 4 ft.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
For the Atlantic coast and Delaware Bay: Tidal anomalies are
expected to increase quickly as the center of the high shifts east,
and winds become easterly over our region starting late Sunday. The
good news is that the quarter moon is today, so for the next two
days, it will take an anomaly of at least 1.5 ft (for the higher
astronomical tides) to reach minor flooding thresholds. Therefore,
it appears currently that the only high tide cycle of concern is the
high tide on Monday afternoon/evening. At this point it appears
widespread minor flooding is possible across this area. However,
we'll be keeping an eye on guidance trends as the 95th percentile
forecast from the Stevens Institute NYHOPS does show a very small
chance for moderate flooding levels. For now, will add a mention in
the HWO.
Along the tidal Delaware River, widespread minor flooding is less
likely as most guidance is below minor flooding threshold, even with
the Monday evening high tide. I am concerned though that if water
builds up in the Delaware Bay and is slow to evacuate (especially if
we keep southeasterly winds for a prolonged period), guidance is
underestimating the water levels Monday evening.
No tidal flooding is expected on the northeastern Chesapeake Bay at
this time.
