.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will build throughout the day as a clipper system
pushes offshore. High pressure will remain in place through
Wednesday then move offshore as a strong low pressure system
moves across the Great Lakes region. Another area of low
pressure will develop along an approaching cold front late
Thursday and pass west of the forecast area. The cold front will
then cross the area and move offshore by Friday morning. High
pressure will then return across the southeastern states into
the weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...

It is a fairly typical cool season post-frontal afternoon over
our region, complete with abundant strato-cu and breezy WNW
winds. The clouds should begin to thin around sunset and the
gusts will also drop off near/just after sunset. Consequently
expect light winds and mostly clear skies overnight as high
pressure builds in from the SW. The main question overnight will
be if winds are able to decouple allowing us to efficiently
radiationally cool. Current expectation is that it will take a
while, but the more sheltered locations should ultimately
decouple while winds will stay just elevated enough in the urban
areas. Therefore went near/just below consensus in the Pine
Barrens and the eastern PA valleys, while went just above
consensus for the urban corridor. This results in an overnight
minT forecast ranging from the low-mid 20s in outlying/rural
areas to near 30 in the urban corridor/Delmarva. A forecast
caveat remains the spatially variable and quickly diminishing
snowpack over portions of our area which both effects the
radiational cooling potential and also the recent bias-
correction of guidance.

The surface high will crest the forecast area Wednesday morning
with the mid-lvl ridge axis following shortly after. Winds
should shift southerly-southeasterly as the high moves
offshore, but speeds should remain quite light through the day.
Expect mostly sunny skies in the morning, before a (likely)
opaque cirrus deck likely arrives sometime in the afternoon.
Given a good amount of sun (at least early) and the shift to
southerly flow went on the higher end of guidance for MaxTs with
forecast highs generally in the low to mid 40s.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...

Return flow sets up ahead of an approaching cold front as low
pressure passing through the Great Lakes moves into eastern
Canada. Meanwhile, as the base of a deep H5 trough moves through
the Gulf Coast, a secondary low will develop over the Mid-
Atlantic along the approaching cold front during the day
Thursday and lifts north across the Appalachians Thursday
evening.

In terms of weather for the region, light precip is possible
Thursday morning as a developing warm front lifts north through
the region, however much of the operational guidance does not
indicate much in the way of QPF during this time. For the far
northern zones, generally north of I-78, enough cold and dry air
will be locked in place that it will take some time for the
warmer air to overcome it. Initially, some type of a light
wintry mix, whether snow, sleet, and/or freezing rain, is
possible in the Lehigh Valley, southern Poconos, and far
northwest New Jersey in the morning before changing to plain
rain in the afternoon. For the rest of the region, temperatures
should be warm enough for all rain at the onset. Highs on
Thursday will top off in the 50s and 60s, which are some 20
degrees above normal. Record highs should be safe.

With strong onshore flow, surface dewpoints will climb well into
the 50s, and as a result, PWATs will be up around 1-1.25
inches, which is about 250 percent above normal for this time of
the year. This combined with strong synoptic forcing aloft will
result in periods of moderate to heavy rain late Thursday and
Thursday night. Storm total QPF looks to range from 1-2 inches
across the vast majority of the forecast area, with 2-3 inches
in the southern Poconos. The issue that comes with this is that
there still is up to a foot or so of snowpack from the storm
last week with as much as 2 inches of water equivalent. By the
time the storm arrives, the water equivalent should be down to
an inch or so, but this will melt fairly rapidly Thursday and
Thursday night with the strong warm air advection and rainfall.
As a result, rises on rivers and streams, as well as poor
drainage flooding appears to be a growing concern, especially
Thursday night. Even for areas away from the rivers and streams,
there may be clogged drains from melted and refrozen snow. WPC
has introduced a slight risk of excessive rainfall across Berks
County, the Lehigh Valley, southern Poconos, and northwest New
Jersey (marginal elsewhere) where the heaviest rainfall is
forecast and the snowpack is deepest. A Flood Watch may be
needed in future updates.

The strong warm air advection over the snowpack is likely to
result in areas of advection fog. Dense fog is possible, but the
details on this are unclear at this time. The heavier rain
should help dissipate any of the more impactful fog that
develops. Will continue to monitor the potential for fog
development.

A southerly LLJ will increase to 70-80 kt at 925 mb or so.
Based on latest BUFKIT profiles, it seems there should be a
strong enough inversion that would keep the strongest winds
aloft, but at this time, cannot rule out 35-40 kt gusts along
the coast, and a Wind Advisory may be needed. With heavy rain
showers, also cannot rule out some of those winds convectively
mixing down to the surface.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Behind the departing low, a strong cold front passes through
the forecast area by daybreak Friday morning, and temperatures
crash into the 20s and 30s. Most of the rain from the departing
low should be departed, but with strong shortwave energy passing
to the north, rain should change to snow in the southern
Poconos, northern New Jersey, Berks County, and Lehigh Valley as
the precipitation ends. Could have a plowable snow on Friday
morning in these areas. For the rest of the region, cannot rule
out scattered snow squalls into the afternoon, but the details
have yet to be developed for that potential.

Another concern on Friday is that with temperatures dropping
below freezing, any standing water will freeze, especially on
untreated surfaces, resulting in hazardous travel conditions.

The widespread precip will be over in the morning, but with H5
trough and strong shortwave energy passing through the
Northeast, scattered precip will continue across the region,
likely as snow.

Cold high pressure builds into the region for the weekend. Will
undercut a blend of guidance by several degrees, and highs may
struggle to get out of the 20s for most areas Saturday and will
stay in the 30s on Sunday. Conditions will be dry.

Another low pressure may affect the region early in the new
week.

Tonight... VFR with WNW winds around 5-10kts, potentially
becoming light and variable later in the night. High confidence

Wednesday... VFR with light and variable winds transitioning to
the S/SE around 5-10kts. High confidence.

Outlook...

Wednesday night...Increasing clouds and lowering ceilings. Fog
with visibility restrictions may develop late. South to
southeast winds 5-10 kts. Moderate confidence.

Thursday through Thursday night...MVFR/IFR conditions developing
during the day with periods of moderate to heavy rain Thursday
night. Areas of fog with lowered visibility restrictions.

SCA remains in effect for most of our waters through midnight
(only until 6 PM for the Upper Delaware Bay) as WNW wind gusts
remain above 25kts and seas remain just near or just over 5ft.
As mentioned in previous discussions there will be the potential
for sporadic gusts near Gale Force near the mouth of the
Delaware Bay.

Winds and seas will diminish below SCA criteria overnight and
then sub-SCA conditions (wind gusts around 10-15kts and seas
1-3ft) will prevail during the day on Wednesday.

OUTLOOK...

Wednesday night...SCA conditions developing late with southerly
winds and seas building toward daybreak Thursday.

Thursday through Thursday night...SCA conditions will be ongoing
by daybreak Thursday with southerly winds gusting up to 30 kts
and seas building greater than 5 feet. Southerly winds will
continue strengthening, especially into the evening and
overnight with gale force winds expected through much of the
evening and overnight period. Visibility restrictions likely in
moderate to heavy rain and fog. Seas across the ocean waters
will build to over 10 feet Thursday night.
