A strong low pressure system will bring rain on Monday, transitioning
to accumulating snow Monday night into Tuesday. Cooler weather is
then expected for the remainder of the week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM MONDAY MORNING/...
Only minor adjustments were needed to the overnight forecast. PoP
onset from the south was slowed slightly to better match current
trends and hi-res guidance, and cloud cover was nudged upwards to
better align with current conditions. Otherwise, the forecast remains
on track.
Previous Discussion...
Into the overnight hours, lingering dry air at the surface will make
saturation of the lower levels a slightly slower process but the
column will eventually saturate. Locations like MGW will see rain
developing by 06Z and PIT by 09Z. The current track suggests an
initial band of deformation moderate to possibly heavy at times
precip. Have adjusted pops higher and amounts for the increased
confidence.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM MONDAY MORNING THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Evening Update:
Winter Weather Advisories were added for the north/western third of
the forecast area, stretching from Coshocton County to Forest County,
along with the PA and WV ridges. These areas have the highest
confidence of 3+ inches in 12 hours or, where 12 hour totals are
marginally less than 3 in 12, greater impacts from long duration
snowfall. Highest overall totals are expected across Mercer, Venango,
and higher elevations of the PA/WV ridges. Lowest snow totals are
expected along the interior of the CWA, owing to dry slotting and
lesser influence from lake enhancement.
Previous Discussion...
There is increasing consistency among model output solutions
suggesting the phasing of a northern stream longwave trough and
southern stream deepening into Monday across the Mississippi Valley.
With increasing divergence aloft, warm, moist advection in swly flow
on the eastern flank of the deepening low supports likely rain, which
should increase from south to north Monday with the advancement of a
warm front. Rapid sfc low progression is likely to negate
problematic rainfall amounts. Still, some locations will receive
greater than an inch of rain.
Additionally, a lull in widespread precipitation should occur with
anticipated mid-level dry slotting as advertised via both the GFS
and ECMWF once the low becomes closed and eventually cuts off and
colder air filters into the region. Models do seem to be converging
on the 850MB low track from the SW to the NE crossing the PIT Metro.
This continues to highlight any banded snow concerns to the
northwest counties in PA and the western OH counties changing over to
snow first. Models have converged on the bulk of the CAA not
filtering into until closer to 00Z Tuesday for even the OH counties.
Thus have pushed the accumulations to after 00Z Tue.
The rest of the concern will be with the expect lake enhancement
with the deformation zone on the Tuesday period before transitioning
to an all Lake Effect event which will set up by Tuesday evening and
night as the parent low eventually lifts to the northeast of the
area. Model soundings indicating some decent instability in the 50 to
100 J/KG range will hint at a few heavy snow showers, especially in
the north where Mercer and Venango Counties may see snowfall amounts
near Winter Storm criteria. Once again, though, a warm surface layer,
duration, and how quickly the colder air filters into the area at
the start of the event will determine the total amounts.
Cold northwesterly flow in the wake of the departing system will
support continued chance for intermittent snow showers through
Wednesday and will increase storm total amounts.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Brief high pressure should promote dry conditions on Thursday before
precipitation chances increase once again on the van of yet another,
deepening Mississippi Valley low. This should increase precipitation
chances from south to north across the region on Friday. The Friday
evening and Friday night period hints at another Lake Effect scenario
with northwest flow setting up. High pressure once again then follows
this setup with dry conditions to end the extended forecast period.

.AVIATION /00Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Deterioration from VFR through MVFR, to IFR, is expected late tonight
in rain as low pressure tracks N from the SE CONUS. Widespread IFR
should continue Mon as the low crosses the Upper OH Valley region.
Light E-SE wind is expected to back to the W-NW and increase by Mon
aftn as the low moves across the Ern Great Lakes. The rain should mix
with or change to snow at ZZV late in the TAF period in cold
advection behind the low.
.Outlook...
Widespread restrictions should continue Mon night through Tue night
as rain changes to snow under an upper trough. VFR should return by
Wed aftn under building high pressure.
