.A strong late winter storm will bring snow, biting north winds,
rapidly falling temperatures, and localized areas of blowing snow
to the Idaho Panhandle as well as central and eastern Washington.
Snow will develop over central Washington Friday morning and
spread into eastern Washington and north Idaho by the afternoon
and evening. Winds will increase sharply Friday evening and blow
hard through Saturday morning. Saturday and Sunday will feel more
like a January day with the potential for record low temperatures

.SYNOPSIS...
Big weather changes arrive tomorrow and last through the weekend
with blustery north winds, snow, and very cold temperatures as an
arctic front moves into the region. Poor travel conditons
expected Friday evening into Saturday. The work week will start
off dry and cold, but temperatures return to normal by mid week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...

...MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOWFALL AND BLOWING SNOW EXPECTED ACROSS THE
INLAND NORTHWEST Friday INTO SATURDAY WITH FRIDAY EVENING COMMUTE
TO BE IMPACTED...

Tonight through Saturday night: Low pressure that is beginning to
dig down across northern BC and into the Gulf of Alaska as
indicated by the darkening on water vapor satellite imagery. This
disturbance will drop down quickly and strengthen off of the
Northwest coastline tonight with a surface low strengthening to
around 1000 mbs by Friday afternoon. Best forcing aloft
associated with the upper level low will arrive Friday evening.
So through much of the day Friday, we will see the atmosphere
moistening across the northern portion of the region with
increasing isentropic ascent across northeast Washington and the
Northern Panhandle; however, easterly winds will result in
downsloping off of the higher terrain and will make snow
accumulation harder come by. Orographics will play a bigger role
into the east slopes of the northern Cascades and continuing into
Friday night. Best chances for snow further east across the basin
and into the Idaho Panhandle will come Friday night into Saturday
morning as favorable dynamics aloft overcomes the drying affect
of the downsloping off of the Panhandle Mountains.

Northerly winds will also increase on Friday and peak overnight
Friday into Saturday morning. The combination of strong winds and
fresh, relatively dry snow, will create the potential for that
snow to blow around. A low pressure circulation showing up in the
model guidance as far down as 850 mbs will linger over the basin
into Saturday morning, but will fill quickly into Saturday
afternoon. This will result in snow dwindling with time and
amounts become much less by the afternoon hours, especially as
that dry modified Arctic air filters in deeper across the region.
Winds will continue to be breezy to wind and that new snow will
continue to blow around into the afternoon. Temperatures will also
be much much colder with highs only expected to top out in the
upper 20s to lower 30s for many locations on Saturday.

* Snow Amounts: Storm total of 3 to 5 inches of snow accumulation
  across the northern rim of the basin and into the mountains from
  the Cascades to the Northern Panhandle. Total amounts look less
  further south across the basin over into the Spokane/Coeur
  d'Alene corridor, Palouse and Central Panhandle Mountains with 2
  to 4 inches expected.

* Winds: Strongest wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph will be possible
  down the Purcell Trench with peak gusts occurring Friday night
  into Saturday morning. The Okanogan Valley, Waterville Plateau
  and the basin will see wind gusts in the range of 30 to 40 mph.

* Impacts: A wide variety of impacts will be possible with this
  quite late winter storm with impacts to the Friday evening
  commute expected. Snow amounts alone will not be a large
  concern as much as the wind combined with the snow. Many areas,
  including the basin, will see at least a couple of inches of
  snow, and that is enough with these winds to raise concerns for
  reduced visibility due to blow snow. The areas at most risk will
  be down the Purcell Trench and down the Okanogan Valley and
  onto the Waterville Plateau. The latter portion of the region
  will see the potential for more snow with the former seeing
  stronger winds. Blizzard like conditions will be possible for
  these areas. Moderate to heavy snow is expected across the
  Okanogan Highlands and Northeast Mountains. The winter storm
  watch has been upgraded to a winter storm warning for all of
  these areas. Much of the rest of the Inland Northwest has been
  covered with a winter weather advisory. Areas that I was on the
  fence with upgrading to a warning were the Wenatchee Area, Upper
  Columbia Basin and Moses Lake Area.

* Wind Chills: Winds will be blustery with wind chills dropping to
  below zero across the Northern Panhandle both with the snow and
  wind Saturday morning and again Sunday morning even though winds
  will be relaxing but ambient temperatures will be in single
  digits. Single digit wind chills will be possible down the
  Okanogan Valley and out across the basin through the weekend.

Sunday through Friday: The Low will slowly slide down the coast
allowing for a drier, warmer pattern to build into the region.
Models are in fairly good agreement with this period. Lingering snow
showers through the Monday morning with minimal accumulations if any
across the Basin expected. Winds will continue to decline as the
gradient across the region loosens. A punch of high pressure wedged
in between the previous and another Low Off the coast of BC will
help keep the region mainly precip through Friday morning. The next
Low will begin to bring another round of precip to the region,
mainly in the Northern mountains. Highs will start in the 30s to
start the period and climb into the 50s by Thursday and Friday.
The Lows will follow the same trend and start in the single digits
and teens for Sunday morning and finish in the 30s for this

.AVIATION...
18Z TAFS: VFR conditions will prevail over the Inland Northwest
today. Friday will be a different story as an abnormally cold
winter storm drops down along the eastern Pacific. A northerly
gradient will set up through the day on Friday with overrunning
moisture. Easterly upslope flow into the Cascades will result in
snow starting by mid morning at KEAT with deteriorating
conditions. Downsloping off of the Panhandle mountains will keep
snow a bay for the most part into extreme eastern Washington.
Gusty northeasterly winds will increase though with a better
chance for snow by afternoon and especially into Friday night.
