.SYNOPSIS...
Winter weather will return to the Inland Northwest with snow starting
late this afternoon and continuing into Wednesday. Temperatures
will warm before the next system arrives on Saturday with more
snow for the Cascades as well as the northern and eastern
mountains, and rain elsewhere.

.DISCUSSION...
Today through Wednesday Night: Our quiet weather will come to an
end starting later today. This storm is coming at us from a
northwesterly direction with strong northwesterly winds ahead of
it. This pattern of storm favors snow for the southern half of the
Panhandle and the Palouse, as well as the Cascade passes. The
Cascade valleys (Winthrop, Leavenworth) won't see much snow, and
the western Basin (Wenatchee, Omak, Moses Lake) will be largely
dry, with a possible dusting of snow.
Areas like the Palouse and Spokane county will have a large
gradient of snowfall. Near the ID/WA border, these areas can
expect upwards of 5-6 inches, while the West Plains of Spokane
county will see 3-4 inches.
This system will come through in waves. The first wave will reach
the metro area right around the afternoon commute so I started the
warnings/advisories at 4pm. I'm only expecting light amounts of
snow (up to 1") for the afternoon commute. The heavier snow will
wait until after midnight and be heaviest around 4-6 am, ending
around noon for the metro area, while lingering into Wednesday
evening in the Panhandle mountains. RJ
Thursday to Monday: The Inland Northwest will remain in an
active west-northwest flow with the passage of at least a couple
organized systems through Saturday, before more benign weather
into the start of next week. Temperatures will warm into the end
of the week, pushing slightly above normal before a cool down
going into next week.
First another frontal wave slips by between Thursday and Thursday
night. The strong flow tapping a decent atmospheric river (with
PWATS averaging around 0.40 to 0.60 inches or 150-200% of normal)
will continue to provide moderate to heavy precipitation near the
Cascade crest. Then the lee of the Cascades and deeper Columbia
Basin is more apt to be shadowed in such a flow, while the
northern mountains and eastern third of WA into the ID Panhandle
sees higher chances, and especially southeast WA into the
central/southern Panhandle.
Snow levels are forecast to average between 3000-5000 feet, save
for around the northern mountains zones where they are projected
to be between 1500-2500 feet in the morning and night hours. This
means the potential for some light snow accumulations in those
northern valleys and mountains, while more moderate to heavy snow
is forecast near the Cascade crest and over the higher elevations
going into the central Panhandle mountains, including places like
Stevens and Lookout Pass. So continued impacts to travel are
possible here through Thursday. A mix of rain and snow is possible
early around the northern rim of the Columbia Basin, including
the Spokane and Coeur d'Alene area, but the better chances come
in the afternoon when rain is more likely.
Additionally expect locally breezy conditions over the higher
Cascades and then over the deeper Columbia Basin, the Palouse
southward into the Blues and Camas Prairie. Winds of 10-15 mph
with gusts of 25-35 mph will be possible, especially around and
just downwind of the Blue Mountains.
Thursday night into Friday the overall threat of precipitation
wanes, with weak ridging. This will bring with it some threat of
fog, especially over northeast WA and north ID valleys. Otherwise
Friday will see a limited chance of a valley mix and mountain
snow near the Cascades and along the WA/ID border eastward.
Friday night into Saturday the next system makes its way across
the region. This feature looks more sharp and moves by relatively
quickly, so some timing may need to be adjusted. Overall it will
ramp up the precipitation threat again this period, before it
winds down again Saturday night. Snow levels are forecast to be
around 1500-3000 feet, lowest in the north. This supports any
potential precipitation in the morning falling as snow in the
mountains and northern valleys, with a mix around the northern rim
of the Columbia Basin (the US 2 corridor into the Spokane/Cd'A),
before changing to mainly valley rain and mountain snow in the
afternoon. This system too will need to be monitored for possible
moderate to heavy snow accumulations around the Cascades and
ID Panhandle mountains, including the passes. The system will
also come with some breezy conditions and those impacts looks
potentially broader than the Thursday system. The highest threat
will be in the unsheltered zones, with speeds of 10-15 mph and
gusts to around 25-30 mph.
Then Sunday and Monday looks drier and overall cooler as high
pressure builds in, at least before the next system approaches
going into next Tuesday. Look for some lingering rain and snow
shower risk over southeast WA into the central and southern
Panhandle Sunday, but the chances will be limited. Temperatures
