.SYNOPSIS...
A short but largely dry break period in the recent storm parade
will exist today. Yet another system late tonight and into
Saturday will bring another round of snow. High temperatures are
expected to gradually climb well into the 30s over the next
several days with the next potential winter weather system on or
about Tuesday.

Issued a forecast update this morning to adjust for low clouds
and fog. With relatively light winds prevalent across much of the
region, it might be difficult for these low clouds to break today.

Previous Discussion...
Today...Satellite suggests a welcome break period in the active
weather cycle is on tap for today with one weather system exiting
to the east and the next major storm system gathering steam well
offshore in the Gulf of Alaska. Except a few lingering snow
showers in the Idaho Panhandle and near the Cascade crest
today...the main issue will be pockets of fog and fields of low
clouds sloshing around the basin and mantling some of the
northern valleys. Areas where fog and low clouds break up today
stand to see some sunshine with the best chance over the western
zones but probably over the east as well...with the Idaho
panhandle holding on to more extensive upslope clouds through
much of the day.
Tonight and Saturday...The next storm system visible on satellite
as a well defined tight circulation far off the northwest coast
with a substantial occlusion enhancement shield ahead of it will
move into the region beginning late and take much of the day
Saturday to transit the area as first another warm front and then
the trailing occluded front...much the same character and frontal
structure as yesterday's storm system. The air mass remains cold
enough for largely snow as this system passes...although the
lowest elevations along the Snake River and the Spokane River/Long
Lake Valley may warm up enough to allow a change-over to rain by
Saturday afternoon.
Like yesterday's storm this system looks to be focusing its main
accumulating snow potential over the Cascades and the western
basin as well as the Okanogan area...where Winter Storm Watches
will be posted with the morning forecast package. The remaining
northern mountains of Washington and north Idaho will not escape
but expected snow accumulations will be more in the Winter
Weather Advisory category...but the decision to pull the trigger
on these highlights will be punted to subsequent shifts today
after another model run refines the magnitude of the moisture feed
into these areas. Much of the basin including the Spokane/CD'A
area will probably be hit again with another 1 to 3 inches on
Saturday.
Saturday night this latest storm passes off to the east with
lingering Idaho mountain snow showers but with a general drying
in the basin...much like what is going on right now. Expect
seasonably cool morning lows with probably some fog and low clouds
re-developing through out the region by Sunday morning. /Fugazzi
Sunday through Monday night: An upper level ridge builds over the
Inland NW. Plenty of mid and high level moisture arrives with the
ridge giving way to plenty of cloud cover. Weak isentropic lift
will lead to bands of light precipitation over northeast WA, far
northern Idaho and near the Cascade crest. Otherwise the main
story will be drier and milder weathers. Low level southeast flow
spreads over the area while warm air advection boosts snow levels
and temperatures regionwide. Anticipate most low lands to
experience highs at to above freezing. Sheltered northern valleys
may experience patchy freezing fog during the night time hours
under near calm winds.
Tuesday: Precipitation returns as the next weather system pushes
a frontal boundary across the Inland Northwest. Snow levels start
off at the valley floors in the morning with snow at the onset.
By afternoon, snow levels increase to 2-3K ft across southeast
Washington into north Idaho and indicate a rain snow mix in the
afternoon. The GFS model soundings lean more toward snow for
Tuesday with the cooler temperatures, compared to the model blend
which leans to milder temperatures. QFP sweeps through the region
with light snow amounts possible. Snow showers linger Tuesday
night into Wednesday under favorable northwest flow and orographic
lift across north Idaho and southeast Washington along with the
northern Cascades.
By Wednesday night into Thursday: Models suggest more unsettled
conditions, although there are differences among the timing seen
in the deterministic models along with the position of the upper
level ridge which may rear back into the region late in the week.
The presence of the upper ridge nearby lean toward seasonal if not
slightly above normal temperatures for the region. The best
chances for precipitation will continue to lie along the Cascade
crest and parts of north Idaho. /rfox.

18z TAFS: Satellite imagery shows widespread low clouds and fog
across the valleys along I-90 and northward. Widespread IFR
conditions with local LIFR should improve to MVFR/IFR this
afternoon and evening for KGEG-KSFF-KCOE-KMWH-KEAT. KPUW-KLWS
should remain VFR during the day today.
Our next storm system arrives tonight. A few snow showers may
arrive near KGEG-KSFF-KCOE as early as 03z, but more widespread
IFR snow should arrive across KGEG-KSFF-KCOE-KMWH-KEAT around or
after 09z tonight.
