.SYNOPSIS...
A strong storm system will bring heavy snow to much of the
Inland Northwest on Friday. Another storm will bring more snow to
the region on Sunday. Cold arctic air will move into the area on
Monday, with very cold temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday. More
snow is possible for the end of next week.

...HEAVY SNOW FRIDAY AND FRIDAY NIGHT...
Tonight: Weather pattern change underway. A brief break and
decrease in cloud cover may occur this evening ahead of the
next significant weather system to approach the area.
A persistent northwest flow moistens at all layers of the atmosphere
as a warm frontal feature moves thru it and stabilizes it. This will
manifest itself as a cloud shield invading the sky from the west and
lowering late tonight. As such pops remain in place to address
the northwest flow keeping showers and perhaps some flurries with the
highest pops within close proximity of the Cascade Crest, the Blue
Mountains of Washington, and southern portions of the North Idaho
Panhandle. A mention of flurries does get included in the 2-4am
Friday morning time period to address any light snowfall associated
with the approaching Friday storm system. /Pelatti
Friday and Friday night...The expected high impact Pacific storm
system for Friday still looks on track with little run-to-run
changes to the available models as far as the character and
timing. Pacific satellite displays the incoming system as river of
moisture approaching the Alaska Panhandle this afternoon hustled
along by a vigorous Gulf of Alaska short wave. Expect light snow
to develop over the forecast area around sunrise on Friday as this
moisture feed becomes favorably directed into the region from the
southwest and begins lifting over an incipient stationary front
draped over the forecast area west to east.
During the morning hours the northern tier zones and Cascades
will accumulate a few inches of snow...while the eastern zones
will notice minor accumulations whitening up the untreated roads.
During the afternoon snow rates will increase and significant
accumulations will become apparent over the entire area except for
the lower elevations of the basin south of a line from Ritzville
to George and the L-C Valley. In general 2 to 4 inches of
accumulation will fall prior to the evening commute period over
the northern and eastern basin...Okanogan Valley...Waterville
Plateau and higher elevations around the Wenatchee area.
Late in the afternoon the occluded front is still expected to
pass though the Cascades and begin to allow a tapering off of
precipitation in the western basin and Okanogan highlands...but
the triple point of this frontal intersection (occlusion ripping
along the stationary front) will bring a one to 3 hour period of
enhanced snow rates across the northern basin...Spokane and CD'A
area and the Palouse. This is expected to happen around evening
commute time. The Idaho high terrain will see little change
through this period once snow gets going with orographic upslope
enhancement continuing through the night and well into the weekend
as well.
Snow totals for much of the eastern basin including the
Spokane/CD'A area have been trended down a bit over previous
forecasts. This is owing to lower snow:water ratios based on
expected high temps cresting a few degrees above freezing due to
some wind mixing during the day. This will still be a Warning
worthy event...but a general 4 to 6 inches looks more plausible
than previous forecasts of 8 to 12 for the Highway 2 corridor
across the basin...the Spokane/CD'A area and the Palouse along and
to the east of Highway 195. The mountains of northeast Washington
and the Idaho Panhandle will get a good pounding with 8 to 12
inches in the valleys is still looking indubitably plausible.
Saturday and Saturday night...Moist westerly zonal flow in the
wake of Fridays short wave passage will prevail during this
period. The forecast area will exist in an elongated low pressure
area with the fossil stationary front still draped probably over
the northern mountains or the Canadian border. This will be a
relative break period...in the sense that further snow
accumulations across the eastern basin and the northeast
Washington mountains will not be especially troublesome for
seasoned winter travelers. The Idaho panhandle mountains
especially the I-90 corridor through Shoshone County will continue
to experience frequent to nearly constant upslope snow showers
with further accumulations of a few inches every 6 to 12 hours.
The basin however will benefit from a precipitation shadow off
the Cascades and may even see some sun breaks on Saturday. With
the stationary front to the north the region will hold onto milder
than normal temperatures once again on Saturday...in the mid to
upper 30s in the populated areas.
Sunday and Sunday night...The interregnum of merely annoying snow
showers on Saturday will deteriorate back into a meaningful
winter storm situation once again on Sunday and Sunday night. The
next short wave dropping out of the Gulf of Alaska will generate a
surface low pressure transiting along the stationary front laying
over the northern zones. A weaker but still coherent moisture feed
will accompany this low pressure for another round of significant
accumulating snow mainly for the eastern zones with the western
zones benefiting from a continued precipitation shadow. The ECMWF
model is the preferred guidance for the more northerly track of
this storm...with the EC ensemble model spreads displaying more
consistency than the GFS with the more northerly low track. This
track will once again limit snow:water ratios with warmer
temperatures...but still good for a beefy 3 to 6 inch dumping over
the eastern basin...highest amounts in Idaho...and another 6 to 10
inches in the north Idaho Panhandle valleys...with the mountains

Monday through Thursday: Here comes the cold. Or does it? Still
not a clear-cut forecast for this period. Here's the overall
scenario. After the Sunday storm passes through the area, cold
arctic air behind the cold front will begin to push into the area
from BC. Initially this will funnel down the Okanogan Valley and
into the western Columbia Basin (e.g. Moses Lake and Ephrata) on
Sunday night. At this point the winds look like 10-20 mph with
higher gusts, which is not a "strong" event. But still could see
wind chills in the Okanogan Valley of -15 degrees. Meanwhile,
light snow will continue in the Idaho Panhandle, southeast WA, and
the Cascades.
The forecast gets trickier for Tuesday and Wednesday. These look
to be the coldest days. But there's two scenarios. The first is
that the arctic air pushes across all of eastern WA and north ID.
This would push any clouds/snow into Oregon. The result would be
frigid weather, with lows 0 to -20 and highs in the single digits.
The alternate scenario is that the clouds/snow linger over the
forecast area, which would prevent us from getting really cold.
Still cold, just not as cold as the first scenario, with a little
bit of snow. The current forecast does not follow the super-cold
scenario, but stay tuned to the forecast for changes.
Another Pacific system moves into the area for Thursday and
Friday. This would produce more snow for the area. Too far out for
any kind of details. But this would cause some warming, at least
back into the 20s for daytime temperatures. RJ

18Z TAFS: Weak disturbances in a northwest flow will keep clouds
and some light flurries or snow at times today in the aviation area
but not so much for TAF sites. IFR ceilings and visibility in
some locations near mountains today and KPUW as the northwest
flow is an upslope flow there. Some decrease in clouds overnight
but after 12Z Friday some mention of snow associated with the
