.SYNOPSIS...
The Pacific Northwest will receive several rounds of precipitation
this week. Lowland accumulations will be possible on Monday before
precipitation changes to rain or a rain-snow mix. Mountain passes
will receive heavy snow accumulations Monday making travel
potentially difficult, especially over the Cascades. A colder
weather pattern is expected to arrive late this week with the
potential for significant lowland snow accumulations on Friday
into Saturay.

.DISCUSSION...
...PROLONGED PERIOD OF MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW FOR THE CASCADES AND
MOUNTAINS OF THE IDAHO PANHANDLE TONIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY...
Today and Tonight: Our active weather continues. The next system
is already spreading precipitation across western Washington early
this morning. This progressive upper level disturbance is quite
cold aloft. With 500mb temperatures of -30C to -32C, look for rain
and snow showers to increase through the afternoon and peak
between 2PM and 7PM. Despite afternoon temperatures in the mid to
upper 30s in places like Spokane, Pullman, Colville, and
Sandpoint, steep lapse rates may be enough to produce mainly snow
late this afternoon into the evening. Grassy surfaces and
untreated roads may experience accumulating snow briefly. Gusty
southwest winds (15 to 25 mph) and temperatures above freezing
will probably melt a good deal of the lowland accumulation today,
but the mountains will receive significant accumulations. For the
Cascade Crest, accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are expected from
this afternoon through tonight. A Winter Weather Advisory is in
effect for the Crest including Stevens Pass. For the mountains of
the Idaho Panhandle, we expect 4 to 8 inches with the most
significant accumulations occurring this evening.
Monday: Heavy mountain snow will develop Monday morning as deep
Pacific moisture is lifted over a warm front. Lowland snow
accumulations are also expected on Monday before warm air forces a
change from snow to rain over much of the Inland Northwest.
*Cascade Snow: The Cascade Crest will likely receive 1 to 2 feet
quickly on Monday and upper portions of the Methow and Wenatchee
Valleys including Plain, Lake Wenatchee, and Mazama will have a
good shot of 4 to 8 inches during the day Monday.
*Mountain Snow Idaho Panhandle and Northeast Washington: Snow
levels on Monday will initially be lower than 2000 feet region-
wide, but will surge to 3000 feet or higher by Monday evening.
Strong west to northwest mid-level flow will favor heavy
precipitation amounts over the central Idaho Panhandle where
elevations above 4000 feet will likely receive 1 to 2 feet of
snow Monday and Monday night. The wind direction isn't as
favorable for north central and northeast Washington, but snow
levels should remain below 3000 feet longer. The mountains around
Republic and Chewelah will have a good shot of 6 to 12 inches
Monday and Monday night with a foot or more for the high
elevations around Sandpoint.
*Lowland accumulations: There will be a wide range of snow amounts
over the Idaho Panhandle and northeast Washington Monday and
Monday night. A very tough forecast as warmer air will likely
force a change from snow to rain. For Spokane, Pullman, Kellogg,
Wilbur, Grand Coulee, Wenatchee and Omak, our best shot of
accumulation on Monday will be during the morning with with an
inch or two of accumulation. Further north, wet accumulations
will be possible through the afternoon and possibly into Monday
evening for Sandpoint, Bonners Ferry, and Kettle Falls with 2 to
4 inches of increasingly wet/heavy accumulation.
Tuesday through Wednesday: The upper level trough of lower
pressure will push across the Inland Northwest Tuesday night. The
trough will dig as it approaches off of the eastern pacific with
models generally showing the best tap of moisture lifting north on
Tuesday and focusing mostly across the northern mountain areas.
Temperatures will continue to warm as well and snow levels lifting
to around 3500 feet. A southeast surface gradient should mix down
at least a fraction of that warmer air from aloft to the surface
with one more fairly mild day (to go along with this mild stretch
we've been in). Temperatures don't figure to get quite as warm as
in recent days, but I did bump temperatures up a little bit for
tuesday with highs getting up into the 40s to lower 50s. The mild
temperatures will result in precipitaiton falling as rain by this
point, but heavy mountain snow will continue over the Cascades and
over the Northern Panhandle. Cold front passage Tuesday night
will result in another shot of snow over Stevens Pass and along
I-90 from 4th of July Pass and up and over Lookout Pass into
western Montana. Much of the region looks to dry out by Wednesday
with drier air moving in behind the front. Flow aloft will become
northwesterly with snow showers continuing in favored upslope
areas over the Cascade crest and in the Central Panhandle
Mountains. Winds will veer around out of the southwest with a
gradient that would support winds 15 to 25 mph sustained and gusts
to around 35 mph. Strongest gusts are expected off of the
Northeast Blue Mountains and onto the Palouse.
Wednesday night through Sunday: Confidence remains high for a
pattern shift. The longwave pressure pattern will change with high
pressure building and persisting over the eastern Pacific. This
will keep the Northwest under northwest flow and the northerly
component will be more predominant. Stronger northerly flow will
mean a better chance for colder temperatures infiltrating in out
of Canada. Models are also consistent with moisture being
directed into the Northwest and it looks favorable for period
where this moisture will ride up over the cold air and produce
snow across the region. The first of these cold winter storms
would be Friday. More impulses of energy with additional snowfall
looks favorable through the weekend. The end of the week very well
could be the start of a cold and snowy pattern. /SVH

06Z TAFS: Winds subsided early this evening. A shortwave in NE
Oregon will be spreading cloud cover into the region overnight
into Sunday morning. Model soundings show low level moisture
increasing and forming a stratus deck ranging from MVFR to IFR
with spotty flurries, especially in the KGEG-KCOE corridor. The
next cold front arrives between 18z and 23z with another round
snow and rain to the TAF sites and local MVFR conditions. Breezy
southwest to west will develop along and behind the front with
gusts of 20-25kt followed by clearing skies. /rfox.
