.SYNOPSIS...
Showers and thunderstorms will diminish overnight. Sunday will be
rather cool with mountain showers. Drier weather is expected on
Monday and Tuesday for most locations, however it will be chilly
especially in the protected valleys of northeast Washington and
north Idaho. Another Pacific system will bring rain to the region
on Wednesday, followed by a warm weekend.

.DISCUSSION...
Tonight through Monday night: Still trying to pin down the timing
of the sudden high winds. Latest HRRR model would delay the winds
until about 9pm into Spokane. My current forecast has that more
like 7pm. Will continue to monitor and update as needed. Behind
the front, welcome rains will wet just about the entire area,
quickly ending the blowing dust threat. Snow levels will drop
rapidly behind this front, allowing about an inch of snow to fall
on Stevens Pass late tonight and early Sunday morning.

Sunday should be a rather cool and breezy day. The atmosphere will
be unstable as colder air moves in aloft. This should spawn some
showers, mainly over the mountains. Could also get a few afternoon
thunderstorms over the northern mountains and Cascades. But these
will be more of the early-spring variety, so nothing severe
expected. The atmosphere is cool enough that some of the lower
elevations could see snow in the air during the morning hours, but
doubtful anything would accumulate.

This cold air mass will lead to a rather chilly Monday morning.
Forecast low at Spokane airport of 33F, with the usual cold spots
(Deer Park, Republic, Priest Lake, Davenport) dropping into the
mid 20s possibly. We may need to issue some Freeze or Frost
products on Sunday. Otherwise Monday should be about 7-10 degrees
warmer under sunny skies.  RJ

Tuesday through Saturday: The GFS, ECMWF, and its Ensemble means
have come into good agreement during the forecast period leading
to moderate confidence in the extended forecast period with
Wednesday likely the unsettled day of interest. On Tuesday upper
ridge to our east with an approaching upper trough will result in
southwest flow and warmer temperatures. Models currently show
limited moisture and instability over the area with a small chance
of mountain showers. On Wednesday the upper trough moves inland
leading to showers across the region and cooler temperatures.
Cloud cover may limit heating and thunderstorm potential with
current NBM guidance favoring a slight chance over the northern
mountains into the Idaho Panhandle. Ensemble guidance also shows
the best potential for wetting rains across NE Washington into the
Idaho Panhandle as well as the Cascade crest while amounts are
likely to be light across the Columbia Basin and in the lee of the
Cascades. On Thursday this system moves east although some
solutions show some lingering moisture/instability mainly over the
ID Panhandle where shower chances will linger. Friday and
Saturday should be warmer and drier area wide as an upper ridge
begins to build over the area. JW

.AVIATION...
00Z TAFS: Showers and thunderstorms will move through the TAF
sites through 06Z. Confidence is low on the exact details. In
general, KEAT will experience the front first, but winds there are
not expected to be strong. KMWH will have some showers and
thunderstorms ahead of the front which will arrive around 04Z.The
KGEG/KSFF/KCOE/KPUW/KLWS will have one round of thunderstorms
through 03Z, with the front arriving around 05Z. Those TAFs could
also see some MVFR cigs later tonight, lasting into Sunday
morning. Sunday afternoon should have some cumulus clouds with
breezy winds. RJ

.DAY ONE...TODAY AND TONIGHT

Strong thunderstorms will be possible today across much of the
region. The threat will begin with isolated thunderstorms
primarily over southeast Washington and north-central Idaho by
mid-afternoon. These storms could produce moderate sized hail and
gusty winds. A more impactful line of storms will form shortly
thereafter near the Cascades and spread east across the region
through the evening. These storms are expected to produce a line
of strong winds with gusts from 40 to 60 mph possible. Winds this
strong could produce tree damage as well as blowing dust over the
Columbia Basin and Palouse. The threat of thunderstorms and
damaging winds will decrease overnight.

At 555 PM PDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 10
miles northeast of Bovill, or 25 miles southeast of St. Maries,
moving northeast at 20 mph.

Half inch hail and wind gusts up to 55 mph will be possible with
this storm.
