.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will build from the northwest through tonight
and into early Wednesday before shifting farther northward as
low pressure approaches from the southwest. The low will quickly
intensify into a major winter storm just off the Mid Atlantic
coast Wednesday night and then drift eastward and farther out to
sea on Thursday. High pressure will again dominate from
Thursday night into Saturday night, followed by a frontal system
approaching and moving across Sunday into Monday.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
The forecast remains on track this afternoon. Max temperature
range still is mid 30s to near 40. This is slightly below a
MET/MAV blend.

Today will be a fairly dry and chilly day as a strong Arctic
high pressure system remains anchored north of the area. A brisk
NW wind today will continue to advect cool and dry air into the
area under mostly sunny sky conditions.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As the high pressure shifts east tonight, winds shift out of
the N and NE. Skies will become progressively cloudier through
the night as high cirrus eventually overtake the area. Low
temperatures will be quite chilly, generally in the teens and
low 20s (though NYC may be in the middle to upper 20s). There
may even be some isolated single digit readings in the outlying
areas.

Concerning the major winter storm expected to begin Wednesday
afternoon, not a lot was changed with this update.

Models have been in fairly good agreement on the development of
a surface low pressure along the Mid-Atlantic coast on
Wednesday with the potential for significant impacts to the CWA
from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday in the form of a major
winter storm, but with subtle differences that may affect the
forecast especially closer to the coast.

A strong blocking high to the north will provide cold/dry air
initially. A mid level shortwave trough rounds the base of a
long wave trough over the Tennessee Valley Wednesday morning,
allowing the longwave trough to become slightly negatively
tilted. This combined with an intensifying jet streak to the
north will allow for the rapid intensification of a low pressure
system off of the Carolina coast, positioned in the right
entrance region of the upper level jet streak.

The surface low will move NNE along the Mid Atlantic coastline
and then eastward off the Delmarva Wednesday night into
Thursday. Given the strong Arctic high to the north with
surface and low level temperatures at or below freezing, most
of the area should see an all snow event. The last several runs
of the NAM put this somewhat into doubt with a more amplified
upper trough and stronger mid level jet bringing in warmer air
aloft, also a dry slot late Wed night. With the ECMWF actually
trending colder and remaining slower, did not entirely buy this
scenario except for the lower boroughs of NYC and the south
shore/east end of Long Island.

Winds will increase out of the NE Wednesday evening and
Thursday morning as the tightening pressure gradient will allow
for sustained winds of 25-35 mph possible along the coastline
and gusts 40-50 mph for a time, which may cause close to
blizzard conditions for some.

Where precip remains all snow, potential for over 6 inches of
snow is high, with a medium potential for over a foot of snow.
Amounts may be held down closer to the coast by both wind and
potential for mixing, with lower amounts but still medium
potential for 6 inches of accumulating snow before this occurs.

The main change made with this update was trying to identify the
best potential for any mixing to occur. Though the Twin Forks
likely will mix with rain or sleet at some point, the warm nose
at 850mb was fairly minimal, becoming basically isothermal for a
few hours. This would occur in the middle of the storm so heavy
snow will have already occurred resulting in at least 3-6" of
snow. Obviously the exact intensity of the precipitation and the
ultimate track of the low play a significant role in
determining the strength of the warm nose at 850mb and ultimate
duration and potential to mix or change over to rain, so trends
in models regarding precipitation types will be monitored and
updated accordingly.

There is still some question as to how quickly the low will
pull out late Wed night into Thu. Sided more with ECMWF idea of
light snow in the morning, gradually tapering off from W to E
through the day.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Fair and cold Thu night into Sat with high pressure returning,
then some moderation possible with an approaching frontal
system that could bring some rain/snow showers.

.AVIATION /18Z TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
High pressure will build over the region through tonight and
into early Wednesday morning before shifting farther northward.
This will give way to an approaching low pressure system
Wednesday.

VFR conditions through Wednesday morning and then MVFR to IFR
conditions develop as snow begins Wednesday late afternoon and
picks up in intensity going into Wednesday evening.

Winds will be mainly NW today with gusts up to near 20 kt. The
gusts will end late this afternoon into early evening. Winds
will fall below 10 kt tonight and become more northerly.

 ...NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty...

End time of gusts may be off by an hour or two. Start time of snow
on Wednesday could be 1-3 hours off.

.OUTLOOK FOR 18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY...
.Wednesday...Conditions fall to MVFR and IFR in snow, possibly
mixed with rain along the coast at night. LIFR to VLIFR possible
at night with any moderate to heavy snow. NE wind G20-25kt,
increasing to 30-40kt at night.
.Thursday...IFR to MVFR in snow / snow showers, ending during
the late morning for NYC terminals and N/W, early afternoon
east of NYC terminals, with improvement to VFR. N wind G30-40kt
in the morning, subsiding 20-30kt by around noon. Total snowfall
forecast of near 8 to 14 inches possible.

.MARINE...
The marine forecast is on track.

SCA remains in effect for the ocean east of Moriches Inlet as
well as Eastern Long Island Sound and Peconic and Gardiners Bays
with lingering NW gusts still near 25 kt. The SCA is in effect
until 4PM this afternoon. For other waters, the gusts are up to
near 20 kt which is below SCA criteria.

Winds and seas gradually diminish this afternoon into tonight as
high pressure builds in. Below SCA conditions are expected.

The high will depart on Wednesday morning as low pressure approaches
from the southwest on Wednesday.  Winds should ramp up quickly late
day Wed into Wed night, with E-NE gales developing on all waters Wed
night, and potential for storm force gusts on the ocean waters. As a
result, a gale watch is now in effect for all the area waters. NE-N
gales on all waters Thu AM should gradually ramp down later Thu into
Thu night, with gales only on the ocean by afternoon and SCA on the
ocean and eastern Sound/bays by Thu evening. Ocean seas should
remain elevated late Thu night into Fri night and possibly into Sat
morning.

.HYDROLOGY...
There is an increasing potential for significant snowfall
Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning, with liquid
equivalent QPF of 1-2 inches. Any melting should be slow as
high temperatures remain below 40 until the weekend.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
There is potential for more widespread coastal impacts
depending on evolution of a coastal storm Wed into Thu.
Strongest E-NE winds Wed night should coincide with the lower of
the daily high tides, with only minor impact at most, but the
Thu morning high tide could produce widespread minor (and
locally moderate south shore back bay) impacts, especially if
winds maintain more of a NE vs N bearing.
