.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure passes well to the northeast tonight, while high
pressure builds to the south across the Mid Atlantic states.
Another low will then pass south Tuesday night. A cold frontal
passage occurs on Wednesday, then a warming trend ensues for the
end of the week. Low pressure will likely impact the area over
the weekend, although the exact timing is uncertain at this
time.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM TUESDAY MORNING/...
Early update mainly for winds and waves on the marine side.
Otherwise the forecast is generally on track. Increased westerly
flow following the passage of a surface trough over cntrl PA
will help mitigate the radiational cooling. Lows were from a
consensus of MOS, ranging from the lower 20s to lower 30s.
Mainly clear per satellite.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
For Tuesday morning into early Tuesday afternoon, the high pressure
ridge will move across. The pressure gradient will weaken allowing
for winds to become light and variable. Tuesday afternoon into
Tuesday evening, low level moisture increases with a more
southerly return flow developing as high pressure moves offshore
and low pressure approaches from the southwest. The low is
forecast to deepen as it moves off the mid-Atlantic coast
Tuesday night, taking an overall consensus track that will be
east northeast and just south of the 40N/70W benchmark for late
Tuesday night. The 12Z 01/06 NAM takes a farther offshore track,
keeping almost the entire region dry. However, this seems to be
an outlier with quite a few SREF members, GFS, ECMWF, and
Canadian showing the outer edge of the precipitation area just
moving into the coastal areas.

Overall, the storm total snow forecast is around 1 inch for
Eastern Long Island and Southeast Connecticut and less than 1
inch elsewhere.

The track and intensity of the low will play large roles in
determining the precipitation amount and type within the local
region for Tuesday night. The max 850 to 700mb frontogenesis is
south of Long Island Tuesday evening and southeast of Long
Island late Tuesday night. The coastal sections of the region
appear close enough to this forcing for some measurable
precipitation and this would likely be in the form of snow. For
Orange and Putnam counties in New York as well as Western Passaic
county in NJ, that area looks to remain mostly dry. This will be
part of the dynamic cooling due to the deepening low. Temperatures
are expected to cool to their wet bulb values Tuesday evening.

Most of the precipitation of quarter to half inch is remaining
southeast of Long Island by about 25 to 50 miles. A closer to
coast track of this would result in greater snowfall amounts
considering the expected 10 to 1 snow to liquid ratio.

Model blends of data were used for temperatures Tuesday and
Tuesday night with a slight manual adjustment downward for
Tuesday night. Highs Tuesday forecast are in the upper 30s to
lower 40s and lows Tuesday night forecast are in the mid 20s to
lower 30s.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
The models are in good agreement that a cold front comes through
approximately in the 18-21Z time period Wednesday. Still too
far out to have complete confidence in the exact timing however.
Scattered snow showers are expected with the upper trough, with
the NAM suggesting some minimal CAPE and a low to moderate snow
squall parameter. Although right now timing is in the afternoon,
probabilities have been run through the day to account for
uncertainty. A blend of hourly temperatures were used to produce
falling temperatures in the afternoon, especially wrn areas.

Windy behind the front. Cold air advection and H85 winds around 45
kt will produce gusts close to wind advisory criteria Wednesday
afternoon and night. Wind chills by sunrise Thursday will be close
to zero.

A Canadian high traverses the area on Thursday, producing fair and
cold weather. Highs right now look to be a few degrees below
average with weak mixing.

The pattern changes Thursday night with southwesterly flow aloft
developing. This pattern then locks in until the associated
frontal system passes on Saturday or Sunday. Model consensus
right now is Sunday, with the GFS quicker than the ECMWF. Until
the surface low and upper dynamics pass through with the system,
the current progs keep most of the rain north of the area near
the warm frontal boundary. As a result, probabilities have been
capped at the chance level Friday through Sunday.

The return flow Thursday night could lead to some pockets of fog
and/or black ice. Too far out for any confidence however.

A 12 hour break in the weather is then possible before another low
impacts the area potentially Monday. This has a little more of
a southerly track, so there could be some wintry precipitation
away from the coast. This is a very low confidence event based
on the model spread, so only slight chances have been included
in the forecast.

The NBM with local adjustments has been used for most of the
temperatures. Highs around 60 possible on Saturday.

.AVIATION /06Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Weak low pressure passes to the northeast overnight, while high
pressure builds to the south. Another area of low pressure will
then move off the Mid Atlantic coast late Tuesday afternoon,
passing south and east of Long Island Tuesday night.

This will be a mainly VFR forecast through the day Tuesday with
a short period of MVFR/IFR conditions in snow at the coastal
terminals from approximately 00Z to 06Z Wednesday. The best
chance for a light snow accumulation will be at KISP and KGON,
with 1-2 inches expected. The potential for a bit more is
possible should the low track shift a bit father north and
west. The area will be on the northern fringe of the system.
This poses some uncertainty with the amounts as there will be
sharp cutoff from snow to no snow.

W/SW winds 5-10kt overnight will become light and variable late
Tuesday morning into early afternoon. As low pressure approaches
from the SW late in the day, a E-NE flow around 5 kt develops.

.OUTLOOK FOR 06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY...
.Tuesday Night ...Becoming VFR after 06Z.
.Wednesday...VFR. W winds near 20 kt sustained with gusts 30 to
35 kt, gradually diminishing at night.
.Thursday...VFR.
.Friday...Mainly VFR.
.Saturday...Sub VFR conditions possible in rain.

.MARINE...
Winds are expected to increase again late tonight behind the
passage of a surface trough. As a result, the Small Craft
Advisory has been kept up. There is the potential that
conditions remain below criteria.

Conditions trend below SCA criteria on Tuesday with brief high
pressure and low pressure moving south of the local waters Tuesday
night. By late Tuesday night, the low will be deepening as it moves
farther east of the waters, making for the pressure gradient to
increase and low end SCA conditions on the ocean going into
daybreak Wednesday.

Gales are likely Wednesday and Wednesday night, so a watch has been
issued. Advisory level seas will subside Thursday on the ocean.
Winds and seas will builds Friday and Saturday as southwesterly flow
increases. A Small Craft Advisory will likely be needed by
Saturday.
