Forecast Summary:

Relatively tranquil weather is expected through the weekend, along
with a warming trend through Sunday. More unsettled weather arrives
early next week when Monday brings a chance for rain or snow, with
cooler weather to follow through mid week.

Tonight through Friday:

Despite sunny skies, cool northwest winds and an arctic airmass kept
temperatures in the single digits and teens this afternoon. Wind
chills in the 20 to 33 below range this morning had "warmed" this
afternoon, but remained near or below zero in far eastern Nebraska
and western Iowa.

High pressure settling into the Mid Missouri Valley this evening
will bring calm winds, allowing good radiational cooling regime for
temperatures to bottom out overnight. Areas near the east of the
Missouri River will easily drop into this single digits above and
below zero. Areas to the west will begin to see southerly flow
returning after midnight, which will inhibit cooling and perhaps
make temperatures rise before sunrise.

The southerly flow overspreads all of eastern Nebraska and western
Iowa Friday, and along with plenty of sunshine, will help warm
temperatures into the 30s most areas. Strong pressure gradient from
central Nebraska into eastern South Dakota suggests winds may gust
over 40 mph across northeast Nebraska in the afternoon. Wind
Advisory may be needed in that area tomorrow.

Saturday and Sunday:

A relatively mild weekend is in the works, despite a weak cold front
slipping through the area early Saturday. Southerly flow ahead of
that front will limit cooling Friday night, with temps holding in
the middle 20s most areas. After that relatively "mild" start, a
rebound into the 40s is likely as sunshine and light northwest to
westerly low level flow prevails.

Stronger south to southwest wind component on Sunday along with
warming 850 temps suggest some highs in the lower 50s are possible
in our south.

Monday through Thursday:

A little more active weather is in the offing next week. Broad mid
level trough extending from central Canada into the western CONUS
early in the week is forecast to send an embedded shortwave through
the Plains Tuesday. Evolution of mid level pattern is in question
after that as GFS maintains a closed low over the West into mid week
while ECMWF is a bit more progressive and maintains lower heights
over our area.

A cold front will be pushed south through the Plains on Monday ahead
of approaching shortwave. Warm advection ahead of front may trigger
light precipitation, and forcing along front could continue threat
into the evening. However models suggest only spotty precipitation
during the period.

Colder temperatures follow front into mid week. After highs reach
the 40s Monday, highs tumble into the 20s and 30s Tuesday and
Wednesday as colder air characterized by 850 temps approaching minus
10C overspreads the region. ECMWF shows even colder airmass,
bottoming out closer to -15C as surface high settles into the region
on Wednesday. Minor warming is expected Thursday as return flow sets
up behind retreating high pressure.

12-14 knots by 12-15z, then gusts developing 27 to 34 knots
