.SYNOPSIS...Weak weather systems will bring a slight chance of
precipitation to the region on Tuesday night, and then possibly on
Thursday and again over the weekend. Any rainfall that does occur
will likely be light, brief, and primarily focused across the
northern portion of the region. Otherwise, generally dry and
seasonably cool weather conditions will persist.

.DISCUSSION...As of 8:30 PM PST Monday...Current satellite
imagery reveals that skies are clear across our entire region.
Evening temperatures are running close to what they were 24 hours
ago, but dewpoints are generally lower. Clear skies and drier air
means overnight lows tonight will likely be at least as cool as
last night. Thus, we can expect temperatures down around the
freezing mark in the cooler inland valleys by sunrise Tuesday, and
early morning lows as cool as the upper 20s in the coldest
locations.
Satellite also shows a frontal system about 600 miles off the
coast of the Pacific Northwest. Models agree that this system will
track to the east-southeast over the next 24 hours, and arrive
along the northern California coast by late tomorrow. Prior to the
arrival of this system, expect another dry day for the bulk of
our area tomorrow, along with near normal temperatures. Rain may
begin to spread into northwest Sonoma County by late tomorrow
afternoon, but precipitation should hold off for all other areas
until the evening and overnight hours. The frontal boundary is
forecast to rapidly weaken as it pushes south on Tuesday evening,
and moisture will be in short supply. Thus, measurable rainfall
is most likely in the North Bay, with rain chances dropping off
south of the Golden Gate. Even so, the 00Z NAM brings scattered
light rain as far south as northwest Monterey County by late
Tuesday night. Rain totals are expected to be no more than a tenth
of an inch through late Tuesday night and many southern inland
areas will probably remain dry.
The incoming system will bring a cooler airmass into our area.
850 mb temperatures are forecast to drop from about 10 deg C
currently to about 2 deg C by late Tuesday night. As a result,
daytime temperatures are forecast to be at least a few degrees
below seasonal averages on Wednesday. Slightly cooler than normal
temperatures will then likely persist for the remainder of the
week and through next weekend, as a series of weak, but cool,
weather systems continue to move in from the northwest. The next
system is due to spread a brief period of light rain from north to
south across our region from late Wednesday night through
Thursday morning. Another system may bring additional light
precipitation on Friday night and Saturday, although by then the
models disagree on exactly how widespread rain may be. None of
these weather systems will contain much moisture and all will
produce only brief periods of light rain.
Longer range ensemble mean forecasts indicate that the upper ridge
over the Eastern Pacific will retrograde slightly next week,
allowing the trough position to shift westward and off the West
Coast. This will allow for more over-water trajectory and
increased moisture content with any subsequent incoming weather
systems, and thus result in greater precipitation potential by
the middle of the month.

.AVIATION...as of 10:00 PM PST Monday...for 06Z TAFs. Mainly VFR
conditions are expected through the TAF period. High clouds
increasing overnight and through the day Tuesday. Model guidance
continues to indicate the possibility of fog in the North Bay
tonight but confidence remains low. Patchy low vis is also
possible at the SF Bay terminals but confidence on this is also
low. Light offshore winds tonight with onshore winds returning
Tuesday afternoon. Ceilings will begin to lower late Tuesday
afternoon and Tuesday evening as the next trough approaches the
coast. Scattered showers will arrive late in the TAF period.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR. Light variable winds overnight. Light
E/NE winds developing Tuesday morning before becoming onshore
10-15 kt Tuesday afternoon. Possible reduced vis Tuesday morning
due to BR/HZ, but confidence low. VCSH towards the end of the TAF
period with MVFR cigs.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR through the period. Offshore winds
5-10 kt overnight into Tuesday morning. Low clouds begin to
increase late in the period with MVFR cigs returning by Tuesday
evening.

.MARINE...as of 08:40 PM PST Monday...Light to moderate
northwesterly winds will persist over the coastal waters through
much of the week. Moderate northwest swell will also persist.
Scattered showers and breezy winds will develop on Tuesday night
and again on Thursday. A larger northwest swell may impact the
coastal waters this weekend.
