What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS San Francisco Bay Area, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Jan 14, 9:46 PM PST, 5 hours 27 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jan 14, 9:46 PM PST, 5 hours 27 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area
946 PM PST Tue Jan 14 2020

.SYNOPSIS...Clearing skies, light winds and chilly temperatures
overnight. A stronger and wetter system will bring widespread
rain, gusty winds and possible thunderstorms to the region from
late Wednesday night through Thursday. Drier and slightly warmer
conditions are likely by the upcoming weekend.

&&

.DISCUSSION...as of 9:47 PM PST Tuesday...No forecast updates
this evening. Skies are currently mostly clear across the region
with minimal valley fog formation so far. Incoming high clouds to
our north are starting to reach the North Bay and will slowly
drift southward overnight. Still expect some dense valley fog by
morning but not widespread. Temperatures are actually staying mild
so far this evening with dewpoints in the upper 30s to around 40.
The airmass is chilly but the increasing high clouds and weak
warm advection should keep frost to a minimum with just a
seasonably cold winter night.

Wednesday will be a nice prep day ahead of the incoming storm.
Clouds will gradually increase and southerly winds will begin to
increase late in the afternoon/evening as a sign of the incoming
storm.

00z models have remained pretty consistent. Front now looks to be
a Thursday morning main event with impacts to the morning commute.
Moderate strength cold front will pass through the region with
moderate impacts. Brief heavy rain and gusty winds but no major
hydro or wind issues expected. Most of the rains will be with the
cold front and not warm advection rains. Front will be fairly fast
moving so most areas will just see a 3-6 hour window of steady
precip. Forecast thinking remains unchanged. See below for further
details. Extended looking pretty quiet, dry Friday. North Bay
light rain chances Saturday and again on MLK with dry weather
region wide Sunday for any outdoor activities.

&&

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 02:01 PM PST Tuesday...Isolated showers
linger over portions of the North Bay and western portions of the
San Francisco Bay Area early this afternoon. The general trend is
these showers will continue to diminish and only produce trace
amounts to a few hundredths of an inch of rainfall. Elsewhere, a
mix of sun and clouds persist region- wide with temperatures
generally in the lower to middle 50s. As sky conditions begin to
clear later this evening and overnight, temperatures will drop
into the 30s to lower 40s for much of the region. Some of the
coldest interior locations may drop into the upper 20s with areas
of frost likely. Higher level clouds will begin to advect inland
over the North Bay early Wednesday morning ahead of our next storm
system and could potentially limit cooling, yet lower 30s will
still be common in the valleys.

The next mid/upper level low pressure system is forecast to develop
over the Gulf of Alaska and drop southward off of the Pacific
Northwest coast by Wednesday morning. This will drive a cold front
through our region late Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
Initially, southerly winds will increase ahead of the frontal
boundary Wednesday night and continue through Thursday morning with
wind gusts of up to around 40 MPH possible along the coast and in
the region's higher elevations. These breezy to gusty conditions
will likely be short-lived with wind speeds becoming northwesterly
and weaker in wake of the frontal passage. Thus, will hold off on
a Wind Advisory at this time.

Widespread rainfall will develop first over the North Bay late
Wednesday night before spreading into the San Francisco Bay Area
during the Thursday morning commute. The forecast models have
continued to slow the progression of this system down over the past
24-36 hours with precipitation not reaching the Central Coast and
Monterey Bay Region until midday Thursday. Regardless of timing,
there appears to be a modest amount of moisture and mid/upper level
support with this system to produce moderate to locally heavy
rainfall. While light rain will be possible ahead of the cold front,
the heaviest will likely occur along the main frontal band as it
moves through the region Thursday morning. In wake of the frontal
passage, lingering showers will be possible Thursday afternoon and
evening with the potential for a few thunderstorms as well given the
unstable air mass. With this, cannot rule out stronger showers
and/or thunderstorms producing small hail.

Snow levels are forecast to be around 3,500 feet initially on
Wednesday evening and then rise to above 4,500 feet as warm air
advects inland ahead of the cold front. While a colder air mass will
then settled into the region Thursday, timing of this along with the
highest precipitation will likely limit the amount of snow on area
peaks. The greatest potential for accumulating snowfall will be in
the highest peaks above 4,500 feet, especially in the Santa Lucia
Mountains.

While isolated showers may linger into Thursday night, mainly dry
weather conditions are likely to develop by Friday region-wide. More
zonal flow is then forecast to continue this weekend and into much
of next week with a series of storm system pushing inland well to
our north. A few passing systems may drop far enough south to
produce light rain over the northern portions of the region by the
middle half of next week, yet widespread rainfall appears unlikely
at this time. The forecast will likely come into better focus as we
move forward in time with regards to any unsettled weather
conditions in the extended.

&&

.AVIATION...as of 09:27 PM PST Tuesday...For 06Z TAFs. VFR
conditions through the period. Satellite imagery shows a few low
clouds still around the region between 2,000 and 4,000 ft AGL with
high clouds approaching. Expect increasing high clouds overnight
ahead of the next frontal system. Cigs will gradually lower
tomorrow evening and overnight with showers arriving towards the
end of the taf period in the North Bay before reaching the Bay
Area later in the night. Light winds overnight to turn southerly
by the early afternoon. Guidance shows southerly winds increasing
around the Bay Area tomorrow night with gusts to around 20 kt
possible.

Vicinity of KSFO...VFR with a few low clouds around 2,000 to 4,000
ft and increasing high clouds overnight and tomorrow. Expecting
cigs to lower by tomorrow evening with MVFR conditions possible
tomorrow night as showers arrive. Light winds overnight to turn
southerly by tomorrow afternoon and increase in the evening.
Expecting southerly winds around 10-15 kt with gusts to 20 kt by
about 09z tomorrow night.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR through the period with increasing
high clouds. Lower clouds may develop towards the end of the taf
period. Southerly winds expected overnight and through the
morning.

&&

.MARINE...as of 09:36 PM PST Tuesday...Light to locally moderate
northerly winds will persist tonight before winds turn southerly
tomorrow ahead of a cold front. Southerly winds will increase
throughout the day tomorrow before strong and gusty gale-force
winds develop by the evening as the front moves through.
Additionally, rain and chances of isolated thunderstorms will
accompany the frontal system. These strong winds will generate
steep waves and create hazardous seas conditions. Moderate
northwest swell will persist tonight and much of tomorrow
producing hazardous conditions for small vessels over the outer
waters. Northwest swell will then build behind the next system on
Thursday and Friday.
