.SYNOPSIS...A cooling trend is likely to occur near the coast on
Friday as marine influences increase and begin to spread locally
inland. Meanwhile, warm and dry conditions will persist across the
interior through much of next week as high pressure dominates the
weather pattern aloft.

.DISCUSSION...as of 02:15 AM PDT Friday... Satellite imagery
looks quite different overnight tonight versus yesterday night as
high clouds advance from the north and a southerly surge marine
layer advances up the coast from the south. This southerly surge
will was expected yesterday and while it appeared slightly earlier
than expected yesterday along the Monterey coast, it is slowed
down yesterday afternoon and struggle to advance north of
Davenport near the border of the Santa Cruz/San Mateo county
coastlines. The southerly surge has exhibited a rapid
northward/inland pace since around midnight after struggling last
evening, now pushing through the Golden Gate gap into the Oakland
Hills, and northward all the way to at least Bodega Bay (if not
even spontaneously beginning to form all the way up the coast to
Fort Bragg). This marine layer development is important for today
and the upcoming days forecast because it will act as a shield
against gradually warming/drying conditions that will be
experienced farther inland (ie into the Central Valley).
Temperatures near the coast are already running up to roughly 3 to
10 degrees cooler than the same time last night due to the
arrival of this marine air mass. Humidity levels are likewise
increasing rapidly nearshore and will help to mitigate fire
weather risks that edged on concern within recent warmer and drier
days.
The synoptic scale pattern continues to back a series of
progressively stronger high pressure systems nudging in and out of
the Bay Area through the next week. Today the region will be
under the apex of a progressively tilted ridge that will
essentially break off the the base of the ridge 1500miles offshore
and realign itself over the Pacific coast from California
northward into British Columbia, pushing 850mb temperatures to
around 19-20C (+3-4 over yesterday) by this afternoon. Despite
this, only the most extreme inland portions of the SF Bay and
Central Coast valleys may see similar to slightly warmer
temperatures today, while most other areas will see a moderate to
significant cooling trend today. This is due to the previously
discussed marine layer influence, with will not only bring in a
cooling, moistening marine layer to the coast, but also be the
supply to advect in cooler, moister conditions farther inland as
the sea breeze increases with the increased onshore
pressure/temperature gradient. Areas that may not see the marine
layer will still be moderated by onshore winds tapping into the
moist, cool marine air mass upstream. This will essentially be the
story of the next several days as increasingly stronger, warmer
high pressure systems build into the state from varying attack
vectors (from the west today, from the south over the weekend,
from the southeast next week). Despite the warmer, drier air aloft
and over the Central Valley, the San Francisco Bay Area and
Central coast (deeper inland areas excluded) will be tangibly
cooler than surrounding inland areas due to the marine layer
presence and strong afternoon sea breeze development. That said,
those living in the deeper portions of inland valleys should still
anticipate warm to locally hot afternoons in the upper 80s to mid
90s as the marine layer can only suppress so much heating from
aloft/inland (those areas, such as the Central Valley, will see
triple digit heat by next week).
For our area, watching the depth of the marine layer as the
varying high pressure systems ebb and flow over head will be key
for any potential forecast modifications as some vertical
suppression and squashing of the marine layer should be
anticipated. We often also see very foggy conditions with drizzle
occur once this suppression/squashing occurs after the marine
layer has had a chance to deepen to at least 1500-2000 ft for a
day or two. For today, the marine layer is still hovering in the
300-800 ft range, so patchy fog along the coast should be
expected through this morning.

.AVIATION...As of 10:23 PM PDT Thursday...For 06Z TAFs. Satellite
imagery still showing a southerly surge slowly making its way up
the coastline. VFR conditions still anticipated north of the
Monterey Bay aside from a slight chance of MVFR/IFR cigs around
the SF Bay. Low clouds are still very slow to move inland around
the Monterey Peninsula, but IFR/LIFR cigs are expected at some
point overnight and tomorrow morning. Additionally, patchy fog in
the area will also be possible. Light winds overnight increasing
and turning onshore tomorrow afternoon.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR conditions through tonight as stratus
slowly creeps northward along the San Mateo coast. Slight chance
of some BKN cig development overnight/early tomorrow morning but
confidence is low. Will keep an eye on satellite and update taf as
needed. Light winds overnight before turning onshore and
tomorrow afternoon.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...Observations show low clouds have finally
made it over to KSNS and is continuing to slowly move down the
Salinas Valley. Expecting stratus to move over the Monterey
Peninsula at some point tonight and continue into tomorrow morning,
though confidence is low on timing. Patchy fog late tonight/early
tomorrow morning is also possible. Light winds overnight
increasing and turning onshore tomorrow afternoon 10-15 kt.

.MARINE...as of 08:03 PM PDT Thursday...Split flow expected
tonight with northwest winds continuing over the outer waters and
southerly winds developing over the inner waters as a southerly
surge slowly moves up the coast. Locally breezy northwest winds
will persist into late tonight over the northern outer waters
before diminishing. Mixed seas will continue with short period
northwest waves and a longer period southerly swell.
