.SYNOPSIS...Offshore winds are easing in the hills while a 2000
foot marine layer has brought low clouds back over most of the
valleys this morning. A weak low west of Big Sur will keep onshore
winds in place for Saturday with temperatures in the 70s. On
Sunday a dry cold front passes through the region. This will usher
in much drier air and gusty offshore winds by Sunday afternoon. A
strong wind event is forecast Sunday night with a High Wind Watch
and Fire Weather Watches in effect for much of the Bay Area. Winds
gradually ease later Monday into Tuesday. High pressure will bring
a warming trend for much of next week with warm days and cool
nights as overnight lows drop into the 30s for interior valleys.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 3:35 AM PDT Friday...Red Flag Warning for
this morning has been cancelled as offshore winds ease. All
attention for winds is quickly shifting to a Sunday-Monday focus.
More on that below.

In the short term...deepening marine layer has brought low clouds
to much of the region. Low clouds will slowly erode this morning
with onshore winds in place. Temperatures will cool to seasonable
levels with mainly 60s coast and 70s inland today. A weak low west
of Big Sur will approach tonight into Saturday. This will likely
lead to further deepening of the marine layer with widespread low
clouds to start the day Saturday. Temperatures will remain
seasonably cool with 60s and 70s.

Main item of focus is wind event that begins Sunday afternoon.
Have gone ahead and issued a High Wind Watch for the entire Bay
Area starting 4 pm Sunday afternoon and running it through Monday
morning. Models show peak winds starting as early as 4-6 pm and
peaking during the evening and overnight hours. The wind is being
generated by a trough dropping down the Northern Rockies that will
bring snow to the fires over Colorado with a dry cold front
extending back towards Nevada and the Sierra crest.

Meteorological setup is different for this wind event than our
previous Red Flag Warnings so far this fall. As usual expect first
burst of winds to spread over the North Bay Sunday afternoon as
winds come down the Sac Valley and spread over the Bay Area. Since
this wind event will be synoptic driven it wont have the usual
strong diurnal tendencies. Expect increasing winds during the late
afternoon/evening hours before dark. Then as the sun goes down
Sunday night a strong burst of winds will rapidly pass over the
Bay Area. Of course the strongest wind potential will be in the
hills but there is fairly high confidence that winds will mix down
into the lower elevations and then crash along the coastline from
Bodega Bay to Half Moon Bay before spreading offshore. Thus High
Wind Watch covers the entire Bay Area, not just the hills. Wind
damage will be likely for any fire weakened trees. Downed trees,
branches and powerlines will be a high possibility. In addition
any temporary tents or structures may be compromised by the
strong burst of winds. Make plans now for possible power outages
whether they are planned or unplanned. In simple terms this event
looks to be on par with the 2017 wine country fires and last years
Kincade fire (that occurred Oct 26-27th 2019). Will say the
meteorological setup is slightly different. Cold advection looks
stronger which should favor better mixing of winds to the surface.
In addition though the North Bay may take the brunt of the wind
much of the East Bay, SF Peninsula and Santa Cruz mountains will
see high wind potential as well as the Highway 1 corridor Sunday
night. The 2017 wine country and 2019 Kincade peaked between 9 pm
and roughly 1-3 am at night. This event may arrive slightly
earlier but should any fires start it will be a long night of
gusty winds. In addition the airmass appears to be much drier with
humidity values forecast to plummet into the single digits and
teens. There will be no marine layer so even the valleys will be
bone dry. And as has been noted throughout the week this will all
occur on top of record dry fuels. So yes it has similarities to
the 2018 Camp Fire as well. Trying to think back and this pattern
shows strong signals to some memorable Sierra East Wind events
where the winds howl down the corridors of Interstate 80 and Hwy
50 pouring out across the Bay Area. Believe the 2004 Fred, Power
and Rumsey fires showed big growth days under a similar setup.

Anyway peak winds should gradually ease by Monday morning. However
on the backside of the upper trough lingering offshore winds will
continue. Main story Monday afternoon through much of next week
will be warm afternoons and cool nights. The very dry airmass will
allow for adiabatic warming in the afternoons with cool nights.
Expecting many of the inland valleys to see lows in the mid and
upper 30s next week, the coldest nights so far this fall.

Synoptic pattern looks mercifully quiet for most of next week into
Halloween. No rain in the forecast but no signals for more wind
events for now though the uber long range gfs models of course
show more offshore wind events by early November.

.AVIATION...as of 11:11 AM PDT Friday...For 18z tafs. Stratus has
burned off across the area, leading to VFR conditions for the
afternoon. Light and variable winds turning onshore this
afternoon, 10-15 kt, strongest through coastal gaps. Deepening
marine layer and model guidance suggest an early return of stratus
this evening for most terminals, except those far inland. MVFR
Cigs arriving after 09z around SF Bay but closer to 03z around
Monterey Bay terminals. Possible patchy fog in coastal valleys.
Clearing by mid to late morning tomorrow.

Vicinity of KSFO...VFR with mostly clear skies along the coast and
throughout the Bay Area, continuing through evening. Light and
variable winds turning onshore this afternoon after 20z, reaching
10-15 kt. MVFR cigs expected to develop overnight after 10z, with
light and variable winds. Clouds scattering in mid to later
morning Saturday.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR throughout the bay area, with
some lingering stratus further down the Salinas Valley burning off
by 1930z. Light and variable winds, turning onshore this
afternoon, with breezy conditions in the Salinas Valley. Return
of MVFR cigs around 03z, with light and variable winds. Clearing
by late morning Saturday.

.FIRE WEATHER...As of 4:02 AM PDT Friday...All Red Flags for
Friday have been cancelled. Offshore winds easing in the North
and East Bay hills though humidity remains low in the hills.
Marine layer returning with gusto at least allowing for some good
humidity recovery today into Saturday for much of the region.

Fire Weather Watch in effect starting at 11 am Sunday through
Tuesday morning. Latest model timing suggests winds wont increase
across the North Bay hills until Sunday afternoon. Will hold
morning conference calls and its possible Watches get upgraded
today but confidence is very high that this round of Watches will
be upgraded in the next 24 hours. Upcoming event is completely
different than the earlier Red Flags this fall so dont get
complacent with Red Flag fatigue.

High confidence that damaging burst of winds arrives as early as
4-7 pm Sunday afternoon rapidly passing from east to west over
much of the Bay Area. Current model solutions show winds peaking
between 7 pm and midnight Sunday (gusts to 70 mph looks likely)
night as this is being driven by the timing of a cold front well
to our east. Point being is this wont take on the usual middle of
the night timing that often occurs with Bay Area offshore winds.
As noted above for comparison this will be on par with the 2017
wine country and 2019 Kincade fire. Still think the setup is
slightly different and will favor strong wind potential over a
larger region that will include all of the East Bay, SF Peninsula
and much of the Santa Cruz mtns as well as Highway 1 corridor
from Sonoma southward to Half Moon Bay.

Just looked at fuels and ERC readings setting new records. The
stratus coverage the next 1-2 days will temper some of the fine
fuels but it wont matter. Other high confidence element here is
the incredibly dry airmass that will quickly overspread the region
Sunday night into Monday. Expecting widespread RH values in the
single digits and teens at all elevations with no help from the
marine layer.

Any ignitions Sunday evening and night will be very problematic.
Winds will ease Monday morning but low humidity and offshore winds
to continue at lighter wind speeds Monday into Tuesday. High
pressure next week with no rain through the end of the month.

.MARINE...as of 8:45 AM PDT Friday...Winds continue to subside
over most of the coastal waters, but remain stronger over the
northern outermost section. Wave heights remain high, but the
threat of squared seas continues to gradually subside and will
continue to reduce through Saturday. Northwest to north winds will
return Saturday before becoming gusty and shifting more offshore
on Sunday.
