.SYNOPSIS...A cooling trend and continued breezy overnight with a
chance for showers across the Central Coast Sunday. Dry north
winds develop over the Bay Area Sunday into Monday leading to
increased fire weather concerns given the lack of recent rainfall.
High pressure builds Monday through Thursday with dry and mild
weather. Rain chances may return by next weekend.

.DISCUSSION...as of 9:14 PM PST Saturday...Here we are near the
end of a dry February, with the increasing probability that San
Francisco will tie the all-time February driest on record in 1864
with zero rain. There's an amplifying upper level trough arriving
with positive vorticity advection, deeper layer cold air advection
and lowering 500 mb heights (necessary adiabatic cooling). A
moderately developed, smaller scale low at the very base of the
500 mb trough is located approx 400 miles to our northwest with
somewhat decent presentation on infrared satellite imagery
recently yet its development/structure in the lower to mid levels
of the atmosphere where the steering currents are more northerly
will keep this low out over the Pacific tonight and Sunday. Breezy
to windy conditions continue this evening as a new air mass
arrives from the Gulf of Alaska, pressure gradients have ramped up
during the day; strong surface high pressure over the eastern
Pacific is +2 standard deviations per NAEFS. Tonight if not
Saturday will be a reminder that it's still winter, expect a
colder day Saturday especially with the winds factored in. Cold
again Sunday morning with some daytime moderation forecast.

Between the aforementioned low and here modest cloud development
has been occuring while there is generally a lack of water vapor
to tap into, ultimately seeing an improvement in dynamics yet not
enough synergy of all components to get rain going. However, it
is interesting that ESRL's radar and disdrometer page for Santa
Rosa, Cazadero (recently) and Middletown show precipitation aloft
reaching as low as 6 to 8 thousand feet in the last few hours. A
few snow showers could reach the tops of our mountains tonight,
wet bulb zero height (level at which a loss of heat via evaporation
of precipitation would bring about a freezing air temperature) on
the 00z Oakland sounding was ~ 3,500 feet; sometimes the melting
layer extends lower. Close enough to switch KMUX to precip mode
for tonight just in case. There's a better chance for showers over
the southern cwa Sunday.

SPC's convective outlook includes our cwa northward to San Francisco
and San Jose for general thunderstorms 4 am Sunday to 4 am Monday with
steepening mid level lapse rates with cold air aloft. Most unstable
convective available potential energy (CAPE) will be over the coastal
waters and cell development will be close to brushing our coast. Will
let later shifts decide if t'storms need to be added in Sun-Mon
timeframe.

Winds will strengthen once the aforementioned low passes by to our
south, this will create offshore flow and while winds ramp up they
will very likely meet wind advisory criteria. A wind advisory will
be in effect over the North Bay Mountains, all of the East Bay from
10 am Sunday to 9 am Monday, and for the SF Peninsula Coast, Santa
Cruz Mountains and northern Monterey Bay from 4 pm Sunday to 9 am
Monday. For fire weather concerns, as briefed by our own IMETs, fuels
are not yet critically dry though at record levels while live fuel
moistures are still high. This will be monitored closely. More details
on this in the fire weather section below.

Outlook for rain chances? Optimistically as mentioned last night, it's
good to see an unsteady hemispheric long wave pattern emerging in the
8-10 day 500 mb mean heights from a recent equilibrium state. Thought
is a recently record strong polar vortex will at some point soon further
engage or recouple to the mid latitudes wind flow through latitudinal
temperature contrasts and shear, should translate to energy conversion,
i.e. more low pressure systems in the mid latitudes. And we should
benefit from it with precipitation. Wet weather late next week is
somewhat promising in the outlook.

.AVIATION...as of 10:10 PM PST Saturday...West winds gusting to 30-35
kt continue near the coast and through the San Bruno coastal gap
impacting SFO. Winds have decreased elsewhere for tonight but a
strong north to northeast flow will develop Sunday as an upper
level trough moves through the district. Winds aloft are expected
to become de-coupled from the surface possibly resulting in LLWS
over the SFO Bay Area terminals. VFR conditions are expected
through Sunday except patchy low clouds along the coastal hills
impacting MRY at times.

Monterey Bay Terminals...Low clouds forming over the coastal
hills are bringing MVFR cigs to MRY. Clouds should dissipate early
Sunday morning as winds decrease. West to northwest winds 10-15
kt.

.FIRE WEATHER...as of 3:38 am Saturday...Not surprisingly fuel
charts are now showing fuels at all time record dry levels given
the dry February. The incoming cold front will bring little or no
precip to the region, though the most likely chance of showers
will be the BLM lands of San Benito county and Los Padres NF in
Monterey county. For the Bay Area a dry northeast wind will
develop Sunday afternoon into Monday. Wind gusts from 30-40 mph
will be common in the hills with little or no humidity recovery
Sunday night into Monday morning.

This event is analogous to a fall offshore wind event. Of course
soils are still somewhat moist and live fuel moistures are much
higher than in the fall. Rapid fire spread is unlikely given this
and relatively green fine fuels. However, air quality districts
report a lot of prescribed burning going on as well as residential
burning. Any burn bosses and public should be aware of a much
higher than normal (for late Feb/early March) fire danger. Use
caution with any ignition sources (barbecues, parking on grass,
pile burning, debris clearing, etc).

.MARINE...as of 10:07 PM PST Saturday...Gusty northwest winds
developed today following a dry frontal passage. Another round of
strong gusty winds is expected Sunday as an upper level trough
moves through. Cannot rule out a possibility of thunderstorms over
the coastal waters late Sunday.  A moderate period northwest swell
will also remain in the waters  through Sunday.
