.SYNOPSIS...Above normal temperatures will continue into
Saturday. A dry cold front is forecast to move through the region
on Sunday morning, bringing much cooler temperatures on Sunday
along with strong and gusty winds. Cool temperatures will continue
through Tuesday, especially at night when overnight lows will
drop to around freezing in the cooler locations. A gradual warming
trend is forecast from Wednesday through the end of next week. No
precipitation is expected through next week.

.DISCUSSION...As of 8:45 PM PST Friday...A strong upper ridge over
California resulted in much warmer than normal temperatures across
portions of our area today. Afternoon temperatures climbed into
the low to mid 70s in several locations. Carmel Valley was the
warmest spot in our forecast area today with a high of 76.
The primary forecast concern in the short-term is the potential
for fog overnight and into Saturday morning. Surface dewpoints
this evening are similar to last evening, so we could potentially
see pockets of dense fog late tonight and into Saturday morning.
High pressure will remain the dominant weather feature across our
area for one more day, and temperatures on Saturday will remain
warmer than normal. However, light west to northwest afternoon
winds will likely mean at least modest cooling from today's warm
temps.
Evening satellite imagery shows a cold upper trough over the Gulf
of Alaska. Models are in good agreement in dropping this trough to
the southeast over the next 48 hours, and into northern California
by Sunday. An associated cold front is forecast to sweep from
north to south across our area from late Saturday night through
Sunday morning. The front is forecast to be lacking moisture by
the time it reaches our area, so nothing more than sprinkles are
expected as the front passes. The primary impacts this system
will have on our area are much cooler temperatures along with
breezy to windy conditions. Northwest winds will increase after
frontal passage Sunday morning and become strong and gusty by
midday, especially near the coast. Strong and gusty winds will
persist through the afternoon and early evening before gradually
decreasing Sunday night. A High Wind Watch is currently in effect
from early Sunday morning through early Monday morning for all of
our coastal zones, the coastal mountains, and the Santa Clara and
Salinas Valleys. As we draw closer to the wind event, the watch
will be transitioned to either a High Wind Warning or Wind
Advisory. A High Wind Warning may be needed for the immediate
coast, but based on current model data, a Wind Advisory will
likely be sufficient for all other areas.
High temperatures on Sunday are forecast be mostly in the lower
to mid 50s, and be anywhere from 10 to 20 degrees cooler than
today's highs. Blustery conditions will make the temperature drop
feel even more significant.
After Sunday's wind event, attention turns to cold nights early
next week. Winds on Sunday night will likely hold temperatures up
to some extent, but some of the wind sheltered valleys may drop to
near freezing by daybreak Monday. Brisk north winds will persist
into Monday, but diminish by Monday night. With lighter winds and
a cool, dry airmass in place, Monday night will likely be the
coldest night with temperatures expected to drop to around the
freezing mark in many valleys locations, and into the upper 20s in
some of the coldest North Bay Valley locations as well as
southern interior Monterey County. Tuesday night looks to be
nearly as cold as Monday night, especially across the southern
portions of our area. The NBM's minimum temperatures for the
inland valleys appear to be too warm early next week. A forecast
update was completed earlier this evening to adjust minimum
temperatures downward for most valley locations.
An upper ridge is forecast to gradually build over California next
week, resulting in a gradual warming trend, although nights will
remain chilly through much of the week due to clear skies and a
dry airmass. No rain is expected through next week.

.AVIATION...As of 10:06 PM PST Friday...High pressure off the
coast and over the Great Basin is bringing light offshore winds to
the area. Patchy fog advected into the vicinity of SFO this
morning when the wind shifted to a northerly direction. Hi-res
models show less boundary-layer moisture tonight so the chance of
a repeat of this morning is low. Could still see reduced vsbys to
4-6 miles after 12Z. Quiet weather expected for the afternoon but
models suggest a return of low clouds Saturday night.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR. Possible reduced vsbys to 4-6 miles 13Z-
18Z which is the time of maximum humidities.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...Latest models show drier conditions
tonight. VFR expected.

.MARINE...As of 9:45 PM PST Friday...High pressure off the
northern California coast and over the Great Basin will bring
light to moderate northwest winds through Saturday. Northwest
winds will strengthen significantly Saturday night and Sunday
ahead of a dry frontal boundary. Gale to potentially storm force
winds are possible throughout Sunday into early Monday morning.
These strong winds will generate steep waves and create hazardous
seas conditions over the waters. Moderate northwest swell will
continue through much of the forecast period.
