Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...Breezy and much cooler conditions are forecast through
the weekend in wake of a frontal passage early Friday morning.
Isolated to scattered rain showers are also expected across the
region through early Saturday morning. Mainly dry conditions are
likely during the day on Saturday with another round of rain
showers possible Sunday morning, especially across the Central
Coast. Overnight conditions turn much colder from Sunday night
through midweek with the potential for widespread temperatures in
the 30s, particularly across the interior valleys.

&&

.DISCUSSION...as of 9:02PM PDT Friday...It rained at the office
tonight! KMUX radar shows the first batch of precip
currently over the Salinas Valley. Rain was also observed along
other Central Coast locations like Santa Cruz and Watsonville. As
for the Bay Area, Point Reyes observed some of the earliest
afternoon rain showers that came ashore, while another shower made
its way into the San Mateo coast and into portions of the Santa
Clara Valley before dying out.

Water vapor imagery shows the center of the low pressure system that
has brought this moisture into the area currently about 200 miles
west of SF. While the first round of cells has already moved through
portions of the area, the next round is currently visible on radar
and will move into San Mateo, Santa Cruz, and Monterey Counties
within the next couple of hours. No lightning has been detected on
any of these cells, but the possibility is there that we may seem
some isolated maritime thunderstorms which could briefly come
ashore. Overall, expecting showers to persist through the
overnight, with the possibility for some more isolated showers to
develop and come ashore over the rest of the Bay Area as this
moisture plume clips our CWA. Moreover, the influence from this
shortwave also resulted in much cooler max temps than what has
been observed in previous days. And while there is no concern for
poor RH recoveries given the amount of moisture overhead, do
expect temps hovering just a few degrees above freezing overnight
tonight and into Saturday morning in some of the Valleys and
high-terrain locations of the CWA(e.g. North and East Bay
Mountains, Santa Lucia Range). Given the snow line is progged to
come down to 4000 feet over the next couple of days, may even some
snow flurries up at some of the highest points in the Santa Lucia
Range tonight.

As the axis of the shortwave trough exits the region Saturday
morning, expect dry slot to hold for most of the CWA, with only some
isolated rain showers possible through the end of tomorrow morning,
primarily over the Central Coast. Another day of below average temps
will be observed tomorrow regionwide, along with breezy conditions
that will continue through the remainder of the weekend as this
initial shortwave exits and is replaced by a second shortwave
trough. It should be noted that this secondary trough will descend
from the Northwest/Yukon Territories of Canada and most of the
short/medium range models do not take it over the waters of the
PAC NW for extended periods of time. As such, the chances for
precip associated with this secondary shortwave will be lower than
what they were for this initial shortwave. Nonetheless, this
system will allow for some moisture transport over our open waters
again tomorrow night and into late Sunday morning and as such the
possibility for more isolated showers along the Central Coast
will be there again, with some locations seeing anywhere from
trace amounts to locally upwards of 0.10". This will be on top of
the totals received the previous night, so some locations may end
this weekend setup with precip totals of 0.25". All depends on the
intensity of the showers and how well they redevelop tomorrow
night. NAM and local WRF also both in agreement that as the second
moisture plume moves in tomorrow night, will see a low-level jet
begin to develop over our coastal waters and due west of Point
Reyes. 925 hPa winds currently suggesting winds at the core of the
jet at around 50 knots. Could see decent mixing down to the sea
level over the open waters while translating to windy conditions
along the Point Reyes shoreline and breezy onshore winds along
portions of the CWA. As previously mentioned, the lower snowline
and the second chance of precip during this period means that the
possibility for some dusting will once again be possible over the
Santa Lucia Range.

Following the passage of the secondary moisture plume Sunday
morning, the axis of the secondary shortwave trough will begin
trekking towards the Great Basin. As it does so, the position of
Central California over the convergent quadrant will allow for rapid
drying, along with a continuation of breezy conditions across much
of the area. Primary concern will be the development of some
offshore N/NE winds that mid-range guidance expects to develop
Sunday afternoon and into Monday morning over the North and East Bay.
Nonetheless, offshore wind signatures are not as robust as what has been
observed in recent weeks and as such only some minor fire weather
concerns. Another concern will be the cold overnight conditions.
As previously mentioned, the influence of these two back-to-back
shortwaves will reinforce the cold air mass overhead. 850hPa temps
are progged to hover around freezing across much of the CWA. This
setup, coupled with shorter nights, will lead to greater
radiational cooling, especially in the valleys and historically
colder locations of the CWA. As such, have brought down min temps
for Sunday night and into Monday morning in the forecast for
several valleys (e.g. Salinas, Carmel, North Bay valleys) and for
some of the gaps in the interior. Given that several of these
locations will likely also observe overnight temps at/below
freezing, considering issuing frost/freeze products for those
areas.

Looking beyond this weekend, GEFS and ECMWF ENS members indicate a
general troughing pattern over much of the Western US. The upper-
level ridge over the eastern PAC only appears to only weaken
somewhat in most of the current members, however, so for now
expecting it to keep most of these disturbances to our north and
east through much of the upcoming week. That being said, members
indicate the upper-level ridge continues to weaken and retrograde
some by the second half of next week. Should that play out, the
upper-level troughing setup that has remained binded between Japan
and the Bering Straight will quickly deepen over Alaska and
allow for disturbances to spill over into the West Coast. This
would translate into an active storm track late next week that
could result in more precipitation for Northern and Central
California. Stay tuned.

.AVIATION...As of 09:39 PM PST Friday...for 06z TAFs. Showery
over the ocean has picked up but remains scattered and in the
vicinity of terminals from the South Bay and southward down the
Central Coast. Heaviest showers are expected between now and 12z.
Wind gusts have generally stopped, but with breezy winds an
occasional stronger gust cannot be ruled out, especially around
stronger showers. Cigs remain around 3500 feet, with a few clouds
between 1500 and 2000 feet. Any reduction from VFR conditions
would be due to reduced visibility where strongest rainfall is
occurring. MVFR/VFR expected overnight with VFR forecast for
Saturday. Onshore flow increases Saturday night with stronger
gusts near the coast.

Vicinity of KSFO...Showers remain near the terminals, chances of a
stray light shower over the terminal is possible over the next
three to four hours, but bulk of showers is expected to remain
south of the terminal. Cigs remain around 3000 with a few between
1500 and 2000 feet. Winds have already weakened, but an occasional
gust near a neighboring shower is possible. VFR forecast for
Saturday with stronger onshore gusts possible in the afternoon.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO. Possible reduced slant
range visibility on approach for a passing shower through 5z.

Monterey Bay Terminals..Scattered showers are passing over the
terminal with light rain at times. Consistent strong wind gusts
have ceased, but an occasional stronger gust cannot be ruled out
completely with showers near the terminal. Scattered showers
continue overnight through 12z. VFR forecast for Saturday
afternoon as winds remain onshore, with stronger gusts possible in
the afternoon.

.MARINE...as of 08:44 PM PST Friday...There are still scattered
showers over the waters which will  continue through Saturday
morning allowing for pockets of  moderate rain. Increasing
northwest winds will continue through  the night with gale force
winds over the outer waters. A second  weather system may bring
another round of near gale-force winds  Saturday night and Sunday.
The strong winds will produce steep  wind waves and large
northwest swells through the weekend.
