.SYNOPSIS...One more day of warm and dry weather before a strong
cold front passes through the Bay Area on Friday. Much colder
temps, gusty northwest winds and rain showers to impact the region
Friday and Friday night before ending Saturday morning. Drying but
cool and breezy on Saturday afternoon. A second impulse reaches
the region Sunday morning with more showers and continued cool
weather. Dry but with below normal temperatures next week with a
trough along the West Coast. Overnight lows will be the coldest of
the year with widespread 30s for the inland valleys.

.DISCUSSION...as of 3:50 AM PST Thursday...If you've been
distracted by other events be advised that today will be the last
day of warm/quiet/tranquil weather for awhile. If you have any
outdoor projects you need to complete this will be your last
chance before strong winds, much colder temperatures and shower
chances arrive Friday into the weekend.
Short term: There are national outages ongoing so you may notice
missing model, satellite, buoy and other data on our webpages and
other data sources. In terms of weather skies are mostly clear
this morning with some patchy North Bay fog and along the coast
around Half Moon Bay. Expect one last warm day today with plenty
of sunshine and highs into the 70s and 80s.
Abrupt cold frontal passage will occur on Friday. Expect initial
boundary to reach the far North Bay as early as 12z Friday with
some light pre-frontal showers breaking out along the coast from
Sonoma to Monterey Friday morning. Precip will be light and
scattered but fully expect that we'll be switching the radar into
precip mode about 24 hours from now. Explicit model solutions dont
show too much precip activity but strength of cold advection and
favorable dynamics and orographics should allow things to
overproduce. Though there has been talk of this system being
moisture starved there is plenty of moisture offshore and TPW
values are currently well in excess of one inch. That being said
moisture isn't deep but again the strength of the surface and
upper forcing should suffice for shower activity to develop on
Friday along the frontal boundary. Inland areas will be less
likely for showers on Friday but all areas will notice the
dramatically cooler temperatures and breezy northwest winds.
Daytime highs will cool around 15-20 degrees most locations with
highs struggling to reach the lower 60s on Friday. It'll feel
colder with biting northwest winds and cold air aloft producing an
almost winter-like chill in the air. It may even may a rare Bay
Area situation where daytime highs are recorded early in the
morning ahead of the cold frontal passage. Winds will pick up in
the pre-dawn hours along the coast and hills with widespread gusts
in the 35 mph range as the front moves through and local gusts to
50 mph likely. Any temporary structures/tents and other outdoor
items should be secured today. In addition fire weakened and any
diseased/drought stressed trees may be impacted by this first
strong cold frontal passage of the season.
After the surface boundary moves through on Friday there will be
a lull in precip chances with skies turning sunny before the core
of the upper low passes over the Bay Area Friday evening. Latest
NAM solutions show 538dm cold core low over the Delta Friday
evening with numerous showers rotating around the upper low.
Coastal areas and the Central Coast look most favored now but
given the steep lapse rates would not at all be surprised to see
shower activity trend wetter than model solutions currently
showing. (side note if heading to the Sierra this weekend be
prepared for snow well below pass levels).
By early Saturday morning the upper low will wobble towards Point
Conception dragging the best precip chances southward. However,
even though the trend for much of Saturday looks dry, temperatures
will remain much colder with daytime highs upper 50s and lower 60s
with continued breezy northerly winds.
A second shortwave dropping down the backside of the longwave
trough will bring a reinforcing shot of cold air for Sunday
morning with another chance of showers. Both the 06z nam and gfs
indicate the best chances for the Central Coast on Sunday morning
but at least slight chances for the Bay Area. Again, though many
places may not see showers on Sunday morning all locations will
feel the much cooler daytime highs this weekend with Sunday
afternoon highs still only upper 50s and lower 60s.
As skies clear and winds ease, Monday morning could be the
coldest so far this fall with widespread valley readings in the
30s. May need to consider frost products as the event nears. Those
without shelter will be impacted by the cold nights as well at
least through the middle of next week.
Long range pattern for next week looks mainly dry but with below
normal temps as the trough stays along the West Coast but the best
precip chances staying to our north and over the northern Sierra.

pressure gradient indicates a light offshore flow which is keeping
low clouds limited this morning. Satellite image shows patchy
stratus forming south of SFO into the northern Santa Clara Valley
which will impact the SFO approach through 15-16Z. Aside from that
and local morning fog around STS, VFR conditions are expected.
MVFR cigs expected tonight with the approach of a frontal system.

Timing: Cold front reaches the North Bay early Friday morning then moves southward to the Central Coast by afternoon. Temperatures: Afternoon highs on Friday will generally be in the upper 50s to lower 60s. This will represent about a 15-20 degree cooling trend from Thursday. Clouds and blustery northwest winds will make conditions feel colder for one of the coldest days since last spring. Temperatures in the hills will be even colder with highs only in the low to mid 50s. Winds: Gusty northwest winds arrive early Friday morning as the front passes through. Wind gusts of 35 mph will be common with local gusts to 50 mph for the hills and favored pass locations such as the Altamont pass. Any temporary tents or outdoor structures could be toppled by strong winds. Drought and diseased trees will be prone to wind damage as well as fire weakened trees in the numerous burn scars throughout the region. For locations that dont receive rainfall any new fires could spread surprisingly fast, even though temperatures will be cool with high humidity the fuels remain very dry for places that dont see rainfall with the frontal passage. Precipitation: Only light showers are forecast Friday morning, mainly near the coast and hills. There may be a midday lull in precip before the core of the most unstable air arrives. Right now the best shower chances look to be from about San Francisco southward to the Central Coast for Friday night but all areas will have a threat for showers. Amounts on average of 0.10 where showers occur but local amounts of 0.20 possible for the higher terrain from Santa Cruz county southward to Monterey. Isolated thunderstorms will be possible as well with the best chance Friday evening into Saturday morning, though the best chances may remain over the ocean. A second system will bring another chance of showers late Saturday night into Sunday morning.
