.SYNOPSIS...Low pressure nudging into the area bringing cooler
temperatures and higher humidities. The marine layer will attempt
to rebound along and just inland of the coast through the next
few days before high pressure returns and suppressed the marine
layer. Smoke and haze is likely to impact portions of the region
through the end of the week at least. Another surge of elevated
moisture and instability is on the horizon late in the weekend to
early next week.

.DISCUSSION...as of 09:03 PM PDT Thursday...The story tonight is
similar to yesterday's, with large wildfires burning all over the
the State. Within our own CWA the LNU complex in Napa County,the
CZU complex in San Mateo and Santa Cruz Counties, the SCU complex
in Contra Costa, Alameda, and Santa Clara Counties along with the
River, Dolan, and Carmel fires in Monterey County are all still
active. Unfortunately, Big Basin Redwoods State Park was
devastated by the CZU complex fires over the last few hours, with
the smoke plume associated with it making it well into the other
side of Monterey Bay. In fact most of the Central Coast this
evening is blanketed in smoke again, with the plume stretching
nearly 600 miles offshore. Smoke continues to be trapped over the
region owing to a strong decoupling of the lower and free
atmosphere, resulting in poor air quality conditions throughout
the CWA and notably in the Bay Area.

From the 00Z sounding we see ceiling heights around 1000ft.
Similarly, we see from the Ford Ord Profiler this evening a depth
nearing that 1000 ft-mark. This is some good news, as we are
seeing a gradual return of the marine layer and expect depths to
build back into the 1000-1200 ft range. We have already observed
some higher RH values in our 1200+ ft elevation sites this evening
than what we observed last night, with several sites making it
into 35-40% range. This is a great improvement to the low 20s and
even teens that we observed last night across similar locations.
The only downside this evening will be the uptick in wind speeds
which have already been observed as a result of the arrival of
cooler moisture associated with the marine layer. These winds will
diminish later tonight but will pose the risk of further fanning
the flames of these active fires until then. As it settles along
the coast, the marine layer will greatly help fire weather operations
at low elevations, but the dry air immediately above its ceiling
will unfortunately not receive the same assistance. As a result,
areas immediately above the marine layer may not receive the same
moisture recoveries through the overnight hours, and as such fire
operations in high- elevation locations may have to deal with
conditions that are only slightly better than those that were
observed last night.

Looking ahead into this weekend, the upper-level ridge over the
Southwest US continues to weaken and is progged to compress through
the weekend while the upper-level trough off the coast of BC gradually
makes its way ashore and places northern California and the PAC
NW within its divergent quadrant. This setup will bring some more
relief to the area through Saturday as the marine layer is able to
gradually build back. How much it will be able to backbuild will
be limited, however, by the upper-level ridge which will keep
500mb heights in the 587-591dm range over our CWA through the
weekend despite its weakened state.

The new concern for Saturday night and through the early part of
next week will be what we should expect from the remnants of
Genevieve. At the moment, Genevieve is located just off the PAC coast
of Southern Baja California and is progged to move towards the NW
over the next 48 hours. Model guidance currently suggests that
some of its remnants will then get entrained up into the coastal
waters of our CWA by the combined onshore flow resulting from the
location of our CWA with respect to the anticyclonic flow from the
upper-level ridge and the cyclonic flow from the upper-level
trough during that period. In terms of how this moisture will
affect our inland locations, there is notable model uncertainty
over the setup. While both the ECMWF-HiRes and GFS model runs
today suggest that the slug of moisture associated with Genevieve
will move from south to north starting as early as Saturday night,
confidence remains low as to the timing of when we should expect
for any potential convection to kick off, as there are disagreements
over the locations with the greatest likelihood to have enough
buoyancy. For now, will continue to monitor the setup closely,
especially as we get into Friday afternoon as newer runs come in
and other medium range models like the NAM are able to look out
into the early part of next week. Emphasis on this setup is
largely due to concerns over Elida from last week, whose remnants
resulted in the overnight elevated convection that helped to
ignite several of this week's fires. Based on models at this time,
this setup does seem to draw some parallels to Elida, albeit the
moisture plume does not appear as intense as last week and the
monsoonal flow does not appear any more significant to what was
observed last week. Nevertheless, this is a system that needs to
be monitored closely.

Beyond this weekend, both the GFS and ECMWF runs do hint that the
upper-level ridge will begin to build itself back up, which will
help to once again promote hot and dry conditions, along with
marine layer suppression that will worsen our fire conditions again.
The good news (if there is any) is that next week's setup is not
hinting at 850mb temps that are as high as the ones we observed
during our heat wave which prompted all of the excessive heat
advisories and warnings in our interior locations.

.AVIATION....As of 10:38 PM PDT Thursday...for 06Z TAFs. The
marine layer is attempting to rebuild along the coast with both
the Fort Ord and Bodega Bay Profilers at around 1,000 ft AGL.
It is very difficult to distinguish on satellite the wildfire
smoke from genuine low clouds, but it appears there are some low
clouds over the coastal waters, around the south SF Bay, and
potentially over parts of the Monterey Peninsula. Patchy stratus
development expected overnight with cigs about 700 to 1,000 ft
AGL with additional layers of smoke bringing SCT to BKN cigs
aloft. Poor slant range visibilities will continue through the
period due to wildfire smoke with occasional MVFR conditions at
some sites due to vis/cigs from the smoke as well.

Winds are beginning to diminish for the evening with some locally
higher gusts lingering over the next couple of hours at KSFO.
Overall onshore winds overnight expected around 10 kt. Onshore
winds to increase again tomorrow afternoon.

Vicinity of KSFO...Satellite appears to show a patch of stratus
that developed over the East Bay around Hayward/Oakland that
expanded westward into the terminal to combine with smoke from the
Woodward Fire near Point Reyes. Periods of IFR cigs overnight due
to low clouds at around 700 to 1,000 ft AGL with additional layers
of smoke aloft. W/NW winds are still gusting to around 20 to 25 kt
this evening but are expected to diminish overnight. Onshore winds
forecast to ramp up again tomorrow afternoon.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals...CZU Complex up in Santa Cruz/San Mateo
continues to blanket the Monterey Bay region with smoke as
northwest winds persist. Expect this to continue through the
period with poor slant range visibilities as well as occasional
BKN to OVC layers of smoke from this complex over KMRY and KSNS.
It is difficult to discern on satellite, but it does appear that a
small patch of stratus may have developed over the Peninsula
brining low cigs to KMRY at about 700 ft AGL as the marine layer
attempts to rebuild. Low confidence on cig forecast overnight as
there is the potential for stratus to expand into the airports
and prevail overnight. Surface visibilities may also reach MVFR at
times due to smoke. Generally light onshore winds overnight with
the typical afternoon sea breeze returning tomorrow afternoon.

.MARINE...as of 08:20 PM PDT Thursday...Moderate to locally gusty
Northwest winds will continue across the coastal waters into the
weekend. Expect elevated winds in the afternoons and evenings
along the immediate coast, particularly south of Point Sur along
the Big Sur Coats where near gale-force gusts will be possible.
Locally breezy winds over the bays in the afternoons and evenings
are also forecast. These winds will generate steep fresh swell
resulting in hazardous seas conditions, especially for small
crafts. Long period southerly swell is possible over the outer
waters this weekend as a result of Tropical Storm Genevieve near
the Baja.
