.DISCUSSION...A weak ridge of high pressure will keep the Northern
Rockies fairly dry today, but this will be short lived.
Temperatures should be running in the 40s for the valleys, which
is around 5 degrees above normal for this time of year.
A cold front pushes through the region later this evening and on
into Friday morning. This front will bring widespread snow to the
Northern Rockies with the bulk of the accumulations being in the
higher terrain along the Montana/Idaho border. Winter weather
advisories have been issued for portions of north central Idaho
and west central Montana. Lookout, Lolo and Lost Trail passes
appear to have the greatest impact as snow accumulations will be
around 4 to 8 inches by Friday afternoon. After the passage of the
cold front, the upper level flow pattern will become
northwesterly. The dynamical portion of an upper level jet will
keep snow showers going over the region throughout the day on
Friday and into Friday night. Temperatures for Friday will be
cooler, but readings should only be slightly below seasonal.
A period of active weather remains on track to impact the
Northern Rockies Saturday night into Monday. A westerly jet will
transport Pacific moisture across the area Saturday night into
Sunday morning, bringing a round of heavy mountain snowfall and
widespread light valley snowfall. An upper level trough and
associated surface cold front will swing through Sunday afternoon.
A brief but intense period of precipitation is possible along the
surface cold front.
An unstable northwesterly flow will continue across the Northern
Rockies Sunday night through Monday. This pattern is favorable for
the development of snow bands, which could cause low visibility
and changeable travel conditions. Given the variability of these
bands, accumulations will vary greatly over relatively short
distances. Nonetheless, slick conditions are possible for the
Monday morning commute.
Model ensemble guidance continues to hint at another shortwave
trough sliding southward out of Alberta Tuesday. This feature will
promote the continuation of snow shower activity across the
Northern Rockies.

.AVIATION...A weak ridge of high pressure has allowed the Northern
Rockies to have a break from the snow for a short bit. This break
in precipitation will allow for the development of patchy fog
throughout the Northern Rockies this morning. Any fog that forms
should dissipate by mid to late morning. A cold front will make
its way across the Northern Rockies later this evening and
overnight. This front will cause widespread snow with lowering
ceilings. Showers will move into the vicinity of KGPI around
14/03z and impact KMSO after 14/06z.
