...Strong Winter Storm Possible Friday into Saturday...
.DISCUSSION...Snow showers have dissipated overnight across the
Northern Rockies, with a mostly benign weather day ahead of us.
This will be the region's last break in action before our early
season winter storm begins to set in Friday afternoon.
Confidence continues to increase for a period of high impact
winter weather Friday night into Saturday morning across the
Northern Rockies. Model ensemble guidances suggest a surface low
will develop across southeast Washington and move southeastward
across the Clearwater Mountains into Lemhi County, Idaho by
Saturday morning. As the low moves southeast, a thermal gradient
will tighten across western Montana as a deep arctic air mass
moves across the Continental Divide. The arctic front will spread
across northwest Montana as early as Friday afternoon, with
snowfall intensifying right around the time of the evening
commute. If this timing holds, it could have a major impact on
those traveling in the evening if not prepared for highly
changeable conditions. Wind will also begin to pick up at this
time and create areas of blowing snow; significantly reducing
visibility in the Flathead valley and Badrock Canyon areas.
Precipitation will then become focused across west central
Montana and north central Idaho early Saturday morning. Strong
synoptic and mesoscale lift will produce a period of intense
snowfall across west central Montana and the Clearwater Mountains
Saturday morning. Vertical model cross-sections suggest snowfall
rates could exceed 1”/hr Saturday morning, for several hours,
given the expansion of the dendritic growth zone and ongoing deep
omega lift. Modest confidence exists for the I-90 corridor,
including the Missoula and Bitteroot valleys, to see these
aforementioned high snowfall rates. The arctic front will move
across western Montana by mid morning. The combination of snow,
blowing snow, and dangerous wind chills could create very
difficult travel conditions. “Blizzard-like” conditions are
also possible in downtown Missoula and in the Rattlesnake, where
Hellgate Canyon gap winds could exceed 40 mph.
As the storm's moisture begins to wane, bitterly cold temperatures
will settle into western Montana and north central Idaho. With
east to northeast winds expected to persist through at least
Sunday, if not Monday as well, potentially dangerous wind chill
values will be possible. The coldest temperatures will occur in
locations closest to the Continental Divide. The coldest morning
will be Sunday morning, when the combination of winds and cold
ambient temperatures will exist. Temperatures will begin to
moderate slowly on Monday, but lingering winds will keep the
threat for very cold morning wind chills going.
Unseasonably cold, dry conditions will persist through midweek.

.AVIATION...Lingering cloud cover will be slow to dissipate this
morning across western Montana in the wake of an exiting weather
disturbance. Today will be a mostly benign weather day, with
plenty of sunshine and lingering blustery easterly winds. A major
winter storm will bring snow, ice, and wind impacts to all area
terminals. Impacts will begin around 23/1800Z and last through
