.DISCUSSION...Moderate to heavy mountain snow will soon impact the
mountains along the ID/MT border this morning, as the second surge
of significant moisture moves into the region during the day
today. The highest snow accumulations of up to 1 foot will fall in
the Bitterroot Mountains along the Idaho border, as well as the
Clearwater Mountains in north-central Idaho through tonight.
Winter Storm Warnings will remain in place through this afternoon.
Travel is expected to be quite difficult for most of the day in
these areas.
For the valleys, most of the snow accumulations are expected to be
relatively light, with an additional 2 to 4 inches expected, on
top of what fell yesterday and last night across NW Montana. One
area of exception, will be the West Glacier Region and Columbia
Falls to Hungry Horse, where up to 6 inches will be possible
through tonight. Winter Weather Advisories will remain in place
for this region through tomorrow morning. All other valley
locations of western Montana and north-central Idaho, will see
light accumulations of 1 to 2 inches at most. Breezy southerly
winds of 25 to 30 mph in Grangeville and vicinity, may briefly
reduce visibility.

The strongest winter event of this weekend will occur Sunday
through Monday night. The very cold air mass that has been piling
up in western Canada will push southward across the continental
divide into Northwest Montana starting Sunday morning over Marias
pass then spreading out to all of Northwest Montana during the
afternoon hours on Sunday. Plenty of relatively warmer and moist
air and a few short waves from the west will converge with this
cold arctic air mass resulting in heavy snow at times across north
central Idaho into Northwest Montana. Very gusty winds to 50 mph
at times, especially out of Badrock Canyon, will produce a lot of
blowing snow across the area. Blizzard conditions are likely to
develop in a few locations. First along Highway 2 from Marias
Pass to Columbia Falls then spreading out into the Flathead
valley during the afternoon. Areas around Badrock Canyon will
likely experience the strongest winds with the Blizzard
conditions.
As a result, winter storm watches are in effect across central
Idaho and Northwest Montana. We have good confidence that the
arctic air and gusty winds will NOT get into Clearwater, Idaho
and Lemhi Counties on Monday. But the cold air could gradually
filter into these places later in the week.
Dangerously cold wind chills are also a good bet along the
Continental Divide and Northwest Montana early next week. When
you combine 10 to 20 below zero temperatures with 10 to 20 mph
winds, wind chill temperatures could approach 50 below zero along
the Continental Divide. Frostbite could occur in as little as 10
minutes for exposed skin.
The forecast after Monday becomes a little less uncertain. The
general flow becomes westerly with plenty of moisture. Meanwhile
indications are that a moderate pressure gradient will persist
along the continental divide allowing for continued east/northeast
winds and cold temperatures along the divide into the Flathead
valley. This would be favorable for periods of snow, especially
across northwest Montana.
Temperatures are expected to be well below zero across northwest
Montana, however how extremely cold temperatures get will be
dependent on cloud cover and winds. Right now it looks like
Wednesday morning will be our coldest weather of the week with
temperatures 5 to 15 degrees below zero. Temperatures across west central and southwest Montana will also
be very cold Tuesday and Wednesday with overnight lows in the
single digits to just below zero.
Perhaps the bigger impact thanks to a persistent strong northeast
to east wind will be pretty cold wind chills Tuesday and
Wednesday across northwest Montana and along the continental
divide. We are expecting wind chills around 15 to 30 degrees
below zero in these areas with some local readings along the
continental divide of 40 to near 50 degrees below zero. Further
south across west central and southwest Montana into central Idaho
and Lemhi county expect wind chills down to 10 below zero.

.AVIATION...Moderate to heavy snow is expected to return to the
mountains this morning and afternoon along the MT/ID border and
the Clearwater Mountains in north-central Idaho. Most valleys will
see relatively light accumulations through the day, with the
higher valley amounts expected to be across northwest Montana,
including KGPI. Another 2 to 3 inches are expected. KMSO, KSMN and
KBTM will see much lighter amounts of 1 inch or less. We still
expect a particularly dangerous situation shaping up on Sunday as
the coldest arctic air of the season moves into northwest
Montana, that includes KGPI.
