...MUCH COLDER, WINDY and MOUNTAIN SNOW MONDAY...
.DISCUSSION...Today will run a few degrees cooler than Saturday,
but still above seasonal normals. Breezy afternoon winds are
anticipated, though not as strong as was seen yesterday. Areas of
haze due to wildfire smoke are anticipated this morning, but
should improve slightly over what was seen yesterday due to the
flow aloft shifting to more northwesterly ahead of the next
weather system.
A big change is still anticipated to begin late tonight into
Monday as a trough deepens and moves south out of Canada. A much
cooler airmass will be ushered into the region, leading to the
development of a strong pressure gradient across western Montana
and north central Idaho during the day Monday. This will result in
gusty northeast to east winds between 40 to 50 mph. Winds are
expected to increase across northwest Montana between 6am and
noon, then shifting into west-central and southwest Montana
between 9am and 3pm and finally into central Idaho between noon
and 6pm. The strongest winds are still anticipated across
northwest Montana (Highway 93 Eureka to Polson and eastward),
along the length of the Continental Divide to roughly Butte, and
in Lemhi County in Idaho. Damage to trees and powerlines as well
as docks on Flathead Lake still look possible.
Forecast models continue to show that this wave will be
accompanied by an area of precipitation, which will primarily
affect the Continental Divide. Precipitation amounts will quickly
taper off as you move towards the Idaho/Montana border, with
northwest Montana and central Idaho seeing little in the way of
beneficial precipitation. Snow levels will quickly lower and could
bring several inches of snow to terrain near the Divide above
roughly 6000 feet, including in Glacier National Park.
Temperatures on Monday will drop nearly 30 degrees from today,
leading to highs only in the 50s for western Montana valleys and
60s to low 70s for central Idaho valleys. The combination of
cooler temperatures, winds and high elevations snow will make for
dangerous conditions for those recreating in the backcountry.
The wave exits the region quickly Monday night, and should bring
clearing skies. While some winds will likely continue across
central Idaho, western Montana will largely see wind come to an
end. This will set up conditions for a very cold start Tuesday
morning, especially across western Montana. Most locations across
western Montana will see temperatures right around freezing, if
not colder. This cold is unseasonably early and will pose a threat
to sensitive vegetation. Another cold (potentially frosty) start
is possible on Wednesday morning.
High pressure builds back into the region Wednesday and Thursday,
allowing temperatures to rebound back into the 80s to end the
week.

.AVIATION...Sunny skies are anticipated today with areas of haze
due to wildfire smoke. This haze could limit visibility locally
through the morning, but is generally expected to improve through
the day as the flow aloft becomes northwesterly. Breezy west to
northwest winds are expected at all airfields today, with gusts
generally around 20kts this afternoon. A significant change will
begin late tonight into Monday morning as a cold Canadian airmass
crosses the Continental Divide. This will result in a wind shift
to the northeast to east with strong gusts, and lowering
ceiling/visibility due to precipitation.
