.DISCUSSION... Current satellite imagery is depicting the
Northern Rockies sandwiched between a large, closed system of
low pressure spinning over Saskatchewan and a broad, closed high
pressure system off the coast of California. The position of these
systems is placing the polar jet stream right over Washington and
the Northern Rockies. This scenario will provide a plume of
Pacific moisture, along with anomalously strong winds aloft,
spelling precipitation and windy weather for the next few days.
Today, expect widespread precipitation with high winds as a fast-
moving and subtle shortwave trough makes its way across northwest
Montana. Snow levels will get down to about 6000 feet in northwest
Montana as some of the higher peaks, especially in the Mission
Mountains, see modest snow accumulations. Backcountry travelers
across the entire region should be prepared for wintry conditions.
Winds will pick up earlier in the day than the usual afternoon
breeze and will be highest in southwest Montana. Boaters on
Flathead Lake should also expect windy, choppy conditions.
After a short break in precipitation on Monday night, another,
more prominent, shortwave trough traverses along the Canadian
border on Tuesday, bringing slightly cooler temperatures and
another round of valley rain and mountain snow on Tuesday into
Wednesday. By Tuesday night, the polar jet stream will be well
established over northern Idaho and western Montana. An unstable
atmosphere will allow these strong winds to descend to the
surface. Wednesday looks to be the windiest day this week.
On Thursday morning, the jet stream shifts to the east as high
pressure begins to build back over the western U.S. There remains
some questions as to whether high pressure will persist through
the weekend, so we will hold off on making any bold claims for
now.

.AVIATION... Widespread steady precipitation early this morning
will give way to more showery conditions by mid day. Lowered
ceilings will cause the higher terrain to be obscured. Snow levels
down to near 5500 feet will lower visibility in the higher
elevations and could cause a brief period of snow at KBTM by mid
morning. Low level wind shear will be a concern at all airfields,
primarily between 12/0900z and 12/1600z, with winds quickly
increasing to near 60 kts from the west at ridge top levels
(roughly 7000 feet MSL). As the atmosphere destabilizes through
the morning, winds will begin to mix down into the valleys. This
will begin as early as 12/1500z, with winds expected to reach peak
intensity around 12/1800z. Gusts of 35 to 45 kts will not be out
of the questions, especially across southwest Montana, including
airfields KMSO and KBTM. Winds and shower activity will gradually
decrease after 13/0000z.
