.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 400 AM EST SUN FEB 23 2020

The two highlights of this forecast period will be the continued
warmth today, followed by a frontal boundary tonight.

Before getting to those two topics, first the remainder of the
overnight period through dawn: a LL stratus deck has formed in
northern WI, currently streaming into western Upper Michigan. Out
ahead of this stratus deck, some fog may possibly form through
dawn, although the window of opportunity for this coming to
fruition is quickly closing. Otherwise, clear skies have and will
continue to prevail.

Warm air continues to flow in under SW flow early this morning,
persisting through much of the day. Yet another well-above normal
temperature day is expected, with widespread upper 30s to mid
40s. However, this will be the last day of this unusual warmth
with temperatures dropping behind the aforementioned front
tonight. However, even with this CAA, lows tonight will still run
above normal, only dropping into the 20s (normal lows are
generally in the single digits for late February).

The front will lack any deep layer moisture with it, with perhaps
some flurries/sprinkles possible in the Keweenaw, courtesy more
from the Great Lake rather than synoptically-provided moisture.
Otherwise, benign conditions are anticipated to persist for this
forecast period, given the lack of impact from said fropa.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)

Quiet weather looks to prevail through early parts of the week, but
a Panhandle Low lifting northeast across the Great Lakes later this
week could bring the potential for accumulating widespread snow.
Colder air will arrive behind the departing surface low through the
end of the week, keeping lake-effect snow showers in the forecast
and more seasonable temperatures for this time of year.

Tuesday night ahead of the approaching surface low, northeast flow
across the area looks to setup with an air air mass that is
borderline for ice generation. Thus, before any short of
upslope/onshore northeast winds start to produce some snow Tuesday
night into Wednesday, there may be a window for some freezing
drizzle. Now, for the potential for widespread system snow, there is
quite a bit of uncertainty in regards to where the main axis of
potentially heavier snow will track Wednesday into Wednesday night.
Right now, the deterministic GFS run is by far the most robust, and
would be a worst-case scenario for the Upper Peninsula of Michigan
as it brings the main axis of higher QPF/heavier snow across much of
the area. The ECMWF, Canadian, and the majority of the GEFS
solutions are far less robust and are much drier across the west and
central, compared to the GFS deterministic run. Therefore, did not
go with the worst-case scenario at this point but did hit the
northeast wind snow belts hardest as northeast fetch with colder air
working behind the exiting system Wednesday should help favor better
chances for snow. Given the uncertainty, it is really hard to tell
whether or not the heavier snow will track into the region, or just
graze the southeastern parts of Upper Michigan. This is definitely a
time frame to keep an eye on over the next couple of days.

Wednesday night through Thursday, the main surface low and 850mb low
exit the region and lift into Ontario/Quebec. This will favor colder
air working south across the region and lingering lake-effect/lake-
enhanced snow across the north wind snow belts. The pattern doesn't
change much through Friday, as north-northeast winds and colder air
continue to linger across the region. Therefore, expect the lake-
effect snow to linger as well. Models aren't terribly impressive
with QPF, but suspect they may be under-doing it at this point
(unless the drier air does end up winning out). Given the lack of
ice on Lake Superior and more than enough lake-induced instability
expected through the end of the work week, leaning towards a better
potential for additional accumulating lake-effect snow. Wouldn't be
surprised if there are a few stronger bands that develop across the
north wind snow belts at times across parts of the north-central and
east.

Over the weekend, conditions look to dry out a bit as high pressure
slides just south of the area and flow gradually backs southerly.

VFR conditions/clear skies may give way to the development of some
patchy fog/low stratus later tonight as added moisture from melting
snow and weakening southwest gradient winds will allow for
saturation in the boundary layer. MVFR vis in BR would be most
likely at KCMX/KSAW with the potential of a brief period of LIFR
cigs possible by Sun morning. At KIWD, slight downslope component to
the wind may be just enough to prevent conditions from falling out
of VFR. As a cold front moves through Sun afternoon winds shifting
from sw to upslope westerly flow will allow for MVFR cigs in stratus
to develop.

Gales return to the lake later today, initially across the west
half under SW flow. As the winds become more westerly to west-
northwesterly behind a front passing through, the stronger winds
will translate to across the eastern half of the lake tonight.
The winds will then wind down as the day progresses tomorrow, with
lighter winds prevailing through the beginning of this week. By
early Tuesday, gusts approaching and perhaps exceeding 30 knots
return, sticking around through the middle of the week. Lighter
winds look to return on Friday, with gusts of less than 25 knots
anticipated into at least the first half of next weekend.

Waves on Lake superior building to 8 to 12 feet Sunday night into
Monday may lead to minor beach erosion and localized lakeshore
flooding, and may push any loose ice onshore along the shoreline
east of Munising. Additional high waves are possible Wednesday
night through Thursday night for the shoreline east of Big Bay to
Whitefish Point.

A developing storm system may bring light to moderate snow to the
area around the middle of next week.
