.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Sunday)

Overcast skies after this morning's fropa have begun to scatter out
across the west and south and will continue to do so from west to
east through the rest of the afternoon and into the evening.
Expecting these to hang on for Marquette County and the higher into
the evening as light NE winds upslope into the higher terrain. As
high pressure slides east of the region tonight and a shortwave and
sfc low begin to move into Minnesota from the west, winds become
southerly tonight bringing in WAA and some theta-e advection.
Expecting things to remain dry, but a few CAMs are suggesting
isolated showers to pop up across the west and central. Otherwise
this should bring in another overcast deck tomorrow morning as winds
upslope from Lake Michigan into the higher terrain of central Upper
Michigan. Lows shouldn't fall off too much, but with the dry cold
front passing through this morning, and skies clearing out, expect
low 30s in the interior and upper 30s to near 40 along the Great
Lakes.
Tomorrow, theta-e advection continues to increase as 850mb temps
climb to around 12C by tomorrow afternoon. As the sfc pressure
gradient tightens, model soundings suggest winds to increase and
gusty conditions to around 20-25 knots are possible over the land,
despite the building inversion. Skies may begin to scatter out some
tomorrow afternoon, but model soundings suggest ample low-level
saturation trapped beneath the strong inversion may be hard to
overcome. CAMs suggest upstream showers and thunderstorms to
develop, but the short-term period looks to remain dry. Look for
highs in the mid 50s to near 60.
.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)

The long-term period begins Monday morning with a negatively tilted
short wave lifting northeastward through Minnesota and across Lake
Superior. The surface reflection of this wave is a strong cold front
oriented north-south that will be pushing quickly eastward across
the U.P. Strong mid-level Q-vector convergence along the front and
upper-level divergence in the right entrance region of an upper-
level jet over northern Ontario will combine to produce a band of
heavy rain that will race across the U.P. from west to east with the
front. The orientation of the upper-level flow will allow for a
little bit of anafront precip as well, but by Monday afternoon rain
will be ending over the west half and then ending over the east half
by evening. Right now, models only show about 100-250 J/kg of MUCAPE
out ahead of the front so have not included any thunder after 12z.
Monday night looks clear and dry behind the front. On Tuesday, a
short wave rotating around a broad closed upper low in northern
Canada will dip down across Minnesota and Lake Superior. Lift with
this wave will at least bring an increase in cloud coverage, and
could kick off a few widely scattered showers as well. However at the
moment models all point to Q-vector convergence not increasing
enough to support showers until once the wave is out over Lake
Superior. Nonetheless, will stick with the NBM initialization and
carry slight chance to chance POPs since some showers on land can't
be ruled out.
As that's happening, a strong jet (175+ kt at 300 mb in the GFS)
will be nosing into the Pacific Northwest. As a ridge erupts over
much of the western U.S., downstream amplification of the pattern
will focus cyclogenesis over the Plains Wednesday morning. There's a
strong signal in yesterday's 18z GEFS (supposedly new and improved!)
for a cyclone to traverse the region Wednesday afternoon and night.
Meanwhile the signal in the CMC-GEPS (12z cycle) is much more
diffuse, only featuring an open wave in the MSLP field that briefly
closes off at 06z Thu before opening back up. The EC also has this
system resolved, and for a few runs in a row now, although it tracks
the surface low a bit farther north which would keep the heavier
synoptic precip confined to the Keweenaw and Lake Superior rather
than across the U.P. So while there are still some exact timing and
placement details to be ironed out, another soaking rain is looking
likely for Wednesday afternoon and night, with better chances north
than south.
Regardless of how the system evolves Wednesday night, what's looking
more and more certain is the strong push of cold air behind it for
Thursday and the rest of the week. GEFS mean 850 mb temps plummet to
around -7 C on Thursday behind this wave and bottom out around -9 C
by Friday morning before more spread develops headed into next
weekend. Temps aloft this cold would certainly support lake-effect
rain and snow showers. At the moment it looks like there will be a
period of dry low to mid levels Thursday, which would limit (but not
entirely extinguish) lake-effect chances despite the favorable delta
T's. But by Thursday night, another short wave embedded within the
long wave trough is progged to drop down across the lake and usher
in deeper moisture which would support more widespread LER/LES.
Increased POPs throughout the W and NW wind L-E belts to get
widespread chance POPs Thursday night through Friday night. Also
knocked high temps down a couple of degrees Friday, with a lot of
the west half perhaps not seeing highs get out of the 30s. That
would certainly support lake-effect snow showers and perhaps even
some light accumulation. While model spread increases somewhat next
weekend, the safe money right now is on continued cold and lake-
effect rain/snow chances through Sunday.

Expect VFR conditions at KSAW as winds become light southeast
overnight. However, additional moisture with increasing southeast
upslope flow should again favor MVFR cigs late overnight into
this afternoon before daytime mixing helps to boost cigs back to
VFR. Under an easterly upslope wind, expect MVFR cigs at KCMX for
the next couple of hrs before winds veer further, diminishing
upsloping and resulting in a return to VFR. VFR conditions will
continue at KIWD through most of the forecast period. Increasing
low-level moisture with strengthening ssw low level flow may
bring MVFR conditions to KIWD and KCMX by late this evening along
with LLWS at KIWD.

A brief period of lighter winds is expected this evening as a ridge
of high pressure skirts to the east; however, the pressure gradient
tightens as an area of low pressure, moves into Minnesota so expect
winds to veer SE late tonight and quickly increase back to around 20-
25 kts. SE winds will increase through the day Sunday to 25-30 kts
by evening with some gales looking likely over the north-central
lake Sunday night.Have continued the Gale Watch for the north-
central and eastern zones for Sunday night into Monday morning.
A sharp cold front will pass across the lake on Monday accompanied
by a rapid wind shift from southerly to westerly. Breezy W or WSW
winds of 20-30 kts look to continue through at least Wednesday, with
some westerly gales not out of the question Wednesday depending on
how far south a region of cold air over northern Ontario gets.
