A Winter Storm Watch with blizzard conditions possible surround the blizzard warning in west central, southwest and south central Minnesota for the same time period. Confidence has increased that portions of west central and southwest Minnesota, mainly west of a Morris to Redwood Falls to St. James line, will have blizzard conditions developing behind a strong Arctic front on Wednesday. The combination of strong gusty winds and whiteout conditions will lead to blizzard conditions for several hours. Confidence is lower on wind speeds farther to the east and thus a Winter Storm Watch has been issued. In addition to the blizzard conditions, temperatures will drop off sharply behind the Arctic front. Wind chill values will drop below -30 by the afternoon in west central Minnesota, with wind chills likely dropping below -35 by the evening. Outside the warning and watch area, significant blowing and drifting snow is likely, with locally one to two inches of snow by the afternoon. Other areas of Minnesota will have similar temperature dropping behind the Arctic front, with wind chill values likely in the -10 to -20 range by the late afternoon in central, and southern Minnesota. Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Twin Cities/Chanhassen MN 1130 AM CST Tue Feb 11 2020 .SHORT TERM...(Today through Wednesday) Issued at 439 AM CST Tue Feb 11 2020 Stratus and scattered flurries will to continue this morning as a shortwave trough passes over the region, but skies are expected to clear out in its wake and lead to a mostly sunny afternoon. Temperatures will remain right around the seasonal norms, with highs this afternoon in the mid to upper 20s. Another, much stronger, trough begins to approach the region tonight into Wednesday, with gusty south/southwest winds developing overnight as the pressure gradient tightens between high pressure over the Ohio Valley and approaching Arctic high pressure out of Canada. Temperatures will likely warm into the upper 20s and low 30s across much of the area tomorrow morning as warm advection and some compressional warming occurs ahead of an approaching Arctic front. Temperatures will then plummet during the afternoon, however, as the front moves through the area and strong cold advection develops in its wake. Air temperatures will likely already be below zero by late Wednesday afternoon across western Minnesota, along with wind chill values approaching values of -25 to -30. A swath of light snow is likely along this front as it passes through the area, but only light accumulations on the order of an inch or less are expected. This light snow could then flash freeze as temperatures plummet Wednesday evening and lead to slick roadways and surfaces. Of more concern with this front will be the gusty north/northwest winds developing in its wake, with areas of blowing and drifting snow likely across west-central, southwest, and south- central Minnesota. Conditions may approach blizzard-criteria at times across open areas as wind gusts of 35-40 mph combine with light falling snow, as well as a fairly fresh snowpack already on the ground from Sunday's snowfall. A few factors do appear to be present that are expected to keep this event from reaching true ground blizzard criteria. Forecast soundings across western and southwestern Minnesota show winds at the top of the mixing channel will likely fall short of the 40 kt threshold that is typically a good delineator for reaching widespread blizzard criteria with blowing snow. The duration of peak winds also looks to be fairly short given the rapid pace of the Arctic front in moving through the area, with only 2-4 hours of the strongest winds expected compared to 6+ hours in more typical events. Finally, the fresh snow on the ground from Sunday will have had a few opportunities to blow around and lose some if its peak blowing/drifting potential before Wednesday afternoon. Widespread wind gusts of 20-30 mph were observed across the area yesterday, westerly winds up to 20 mph expected this afternoon, and southwesterly winds gusting to 25-30 mph are expected tomorrow morning before the frontal passage. This should weather the snowpack at least somewhat before the strongest winds arrive Wednesday afternoon, with visibility and travel issues certainly still expected across western portions of Minnesota but not quite to blizzard-criteria. Will still have time to monitor more high-resolution guidance this morning and afternoon to see if it picks up on the potential for stronger winds than forecast, so decided to hold off on any winter headlines tonight after collaboration with neighboring offices. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Monday) Issued at 439 AM CST Tue Feb 11 2020 Arctic air blasts into the region at the start of the long term period in the wake of the front. On Wednesday night snow exits to the east and skies look to clear across most of the area. With the fresh coating of snow and 925-850mb temps dropping to around -23C, lows in the -10F to -20F range look likely across the MN portion of the area (slightly warmer in the Twin Cities metro). Meanwhile, a longer period of clouds should yield slightly warmer readings over WI, where lows in the single digits below zero are expected. We will likely have issues with very cold wind chills on Wednesday night into Thursday morning as well, given winds will still be fairly brisk with high pressure not having settled in quite yet. Right now we look to be pushing Warning levels (-35F) over west central MN, with areas to the east more in the Advisory range (-25F to -35F). Highs on Thursday will struggle to eclipse zero degrees from west into south central MN, with slightly warmer highs in the single digits to the east. The heart of the cold arrives for Thursday night, with lows looking to be widespread in the -10F to -20F range. Winds will be lighter, but still sufficient enough to bring wind chill concerns from west into south central MN. On Friday high pressure already begins to shift southeast of the region, and allows southerly flow to return. This will facilitate a quick return to above normal temperatures for the weekend into next week. Flash freezing is possible on roadways and surfaces as temperatures plummet behind the front. Dangerous wind chills are expected Wednesday evening through Friday morning, with the coldest wind chills occurring Thursday morning. Wind chill values approaching -40 are possible Thursday morning across west-central and southwestern Minnesota.
