.SHORT TERM...(Today through Friday)
Issued at 354 AM CDT Thu Jul 23 2020

Surface analysis early this morning shows sprawling high pressure
centered over the Great Lakes extending into the Dakotas to the
west and into the mid-Mississippi River Valley to the south. A
quasi- stationary front resides from eastern MT through the
Northern- Central Plains into western MO and into the western Ohio
Valley. Aloft, a weak SW-NE oriented trough axis sits sits over
WI, extending into IA and emanates from an upper level low to the
east of Hudson Bay. Meanwhile, a ridge axis sits over central NOAM
from west of Hudson Bay down to the Gulf Coast.

The trough will have its influence felt this morning over the
eastern half of the WFO MPX coverage area as low stratus and fog
reside over much of the area. As the trough exits to the east this
morning and the ridge axis arrives from the west, this will help
dry out the atmosphere and result in a mix of sun and clouds
today with warm highs in the mid 70s to around 80 in western WI to
the low-mid 80s in the MN portion of the coverage area. At the
surface, the residual stalled front will transition to a warm
front out west and slowly lift back north into the Dakotas and
southwest MN this evening. This will start an appreciable warm air
advection event which will result in uncomfortable heat/humidity
starting overnight tonight and continuing through Friday.

An upper level dome of high pressure will develop over the central
CONUS and extend into the Upper Midwest on Friday, nudging the
surface warm front north across the southern half of MN. A small
compression on the northern periphery of the ridge coinciding with
the warm frontal progression may be just enough to utilize
moisture wrapping around the deep ridge to produce a few isolated
showers/t- storms around daybreak Friday morning. Not looking for
anything strong but it may be just enough to produce some
precipitation through the morning rush hour duration. However,
this additional moisture will aid in producing uncomfortable
humidity across the region, particularly over the MN portion of
the coverage area. The warm front is expected to continue lifting
north through the WFO MPX coverage area during the day Friday. A
prolonged plume of moisture from the Baja region will wrap around
the deep ridge (circa 594dam) and move into the Upper Midwest,
pushing dewpoints from the low-mid 60s today to the low-mid 70s on
Friday. These high dewpoints combined with temperatures into the
low-mid 90s west of I-35 will push heat index values into the
100-105 degree range for much of the MN portion of the coverage
area. With respect to WBGT, values look to rise to the 84-85
degree area which is certainly well within the range when
precautions must be taken for any outdoor activity. While there is
still some wiggle room in exactly how high the heat index values
will reach, there is enough evidence that heat indices will reach
a minimum of Heat Advisory criteria for some areas and potentially
Excessive Heat Warning for others, particularly the Twin Cities
metro. Therefore, at this point to account for the uncertainty of
which locations may need which headlines, have opted to issue an
Excessive Heat Watch for much of central-southern MN and let later
shifts fine tune the forecast for the advisories and warnings.
Clouds will slowly return from the west later in the day on Friday
but likely not enough to mitigate the heat concerns.

.LONG TERM...(Friday night through Wednesday)
Issued at 354 AM CDT Thu Jul 23 2020

The big question for the start of this forecast period will be
what is leftover from Friday's convection? There is still
uncertainty with how Friday evening will pan out and that directly
impacts Saturday's potential for heat/severe/heavy rain. GFS
hangs onto convection and precipitation into Saturday effectively
removing the potential for excessive heat. ECMWF/UKMET/GEM keep
most of Saturday afternoon dry with temperatures upper 80s/low 90s
with dew points in the low to mid 70s. This would prompt a
potential heat headline with heat indices between 95 and 100. I've
kept the NBM's high for Saturday in the upper 80s to low 90s, but
if remnant convection or cloud cover are in place, Saturday's
high temperature could bust low. This also will impact how much
instability will build with a southwesterly low-level jet
increasing the moisture transportation for Saturday afternoon. The
warmer/drier forecast would allow greater instability and
potential for convection to develop ahead of the approaching
upper-level trough/surface cold front for western and central MN.
If remnant convection is in place Saturday morning, there will be
possible outflow boundaries associated with it. This would help
deter instability and potential convection Saturday
afternoon/evening for central MN. All of this creates an aura of
uncertainty on what will play out on Saturday that will keep NBM
chance PoPs throughout the day even though portions of the day
could remain dry.

Saturday night into Sunday shares a similar issue with more
confidence as there will be a surface cold front ahead of the
approaching trough. The main uncertainty on Sunday is timing of
the cold front. A slower FROPA will create a greater chance for
afternoon convection and severe potential for southern MN and
west- central WI. Both Saturday and Sunday have the potential for
any convection to become strong to severe with plenty of low level
moisture, steep lapse rates, and adequate shear in place. Sunday
will remain hot and could prompt another heat headline for the TC
Metro.

Monday through Thursday look to cool off and dry out. Northwest
flow will develop in wake of the passing trough that remains in
place into Thursday. Temperatures will return to a seasonable
range (lower 80s) with less humidity.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Friday afternoon)
Issued at 1240 PM CDT Thu Jul 23 2020

MVFR-level clouds will impact eastern areas this afternoon
(primarily KRNH/KEAU). VFR ceilings are expected area-wide
tonight into Friday. Scattered thunderstorms are possible from
west central into northern MN overnight into Friday morning as low
level warm/moist advection develops ahead of the next system. Have
included a Prob30 at KAXN for now. South-southeast winds increase
ahead of the trough, with gusts to 25-30 knots developing for
Friday.

KMSP...Broken ceilings should scatter out at the start of the TAF
period, with VFR conditions after that through the period.

/OUTLOOK FOR KMSP/
Sat...SHRA/TSRA likely, mainly afternoon-evening. MVFR-IFR
possible. Wind SSW 10-15 kts.
Sun...Mainly VFR. Chc TSRA/MVFR.
Wind SW 5-10 kts becoming NW.
Mon...VFR. Wind NW 5-10 kts.

Hot and humid conditions are expected Friday through the weekend.
Afternoon heat index values on Friday are expected to reach the
100 to 105 degree range in much of central and southern
Minnesota, where an Excessive Heat Watch is in effect. Heat index
