.NEAR TERM /Now Through Saturday/...Mid and upper level clouds will
continue to increase from southwest to northeast through this
evening. The light precipitation on area radars is currently not
reaching the ground as they are high-based reflections, with the
precipitation evaporating before reaching the ground. The upper
level trough, positioned from the Ohio Valley into the western Gulf,
will move slightly southeast through the near term. Ahead of the
trough, a southwesterly flow aloft transports mid and upper-level
moisture over our area from newly formed Tropical Storm Beta over
the southwestern Gulf, with low-level moisture increasing after
midnight tonight through Saturday. In the lower levels, a light
northerly flow will shift to the northeast as a surface high
pressure area north of the region moves east toward the eastern
seaboard. With low-level moisture on the increase and enhanced
lifting along the upper trough late tonight through Saturday,
precipitation forming in the mid-levels will eventually make it to
the surface. So, expect isolated to scattered rain showers to
develop after midnight through Saturday.

The thickening cloud cover keeps high temperatures Saturday in the
75 to 80 degree range, with overnight lows tonight ranging from 62
to 67 degrees northwest of I-65, and from 67 to 73 degrees southeast
of I-65. A moderate risk of rip currents continue through Saturday.

.SHORT TERM /Saturday Night Through Monday Night/...A mid level
trough axis will move east across the north central Gulf Coast
Saturday night which will support a surge in northeast surface winds
by Sunday. There may be isolated showers along the coast in response
to the enhanced mid level forcing and weak isentropic ascent north
of a stalled front over the northern Gulf. Any rainfall that does
occur will be low in coverage and light.

A drier and cooler airmass will advect into the area Sunday through
Monday afternoon. Temperatures will remain below normal through this
period with highs in the 70s and lows in the low to mid 60s. A
tightening pressure gradient between surface high pressure to the
north and an intensifying tropical cyclone over the southwest Gulf
of Mexico will result in windy conditions along the coast and across
the coastal waters.

The persistent strong easterly fetch along with swell from the
tropical cyclone should result in an increasing rip current risk
along area beaches. /JLH

.EXTENDED TERM /Tuesday Through Friday/...The main focus for the
extended forecast period will be on Tropical Storm or Hurricane Beta
that will have formed and be near the Texas coast early in the
extended period. Upper level ridging should quickly shift east
across the area Tuesday as another mid level trough digs south
across the Plains states. This upper trough should help to capture
the tropical cyclone and lift it off to the northeast through mid
week. There will be a gradual return of deeper moisture from the
southwest. Rain chances will gradually increase from southwest to
northeast later Tuesday into Wednesday in advance of Beta. The
greatest rain chances should come by the end of next week as Beta
lifts northeast and slows across the Lower Mississippi Valley. There
is still model discrepancy among the medium range guidance and
additional refinements to rain chances are likely for the end of
next week based upon the eventual track of Beta. For now, it appears
that the greater potential for higher impacts remain west of the
forecast area, but this will be monitored closely through the rest
of the forecast period. /JLH

.MARINE...A light to moderate offshore flow tonight will transition
to a moderate to strong northeasterly to easterly fetch this weekend
into early next week. This occurs due to the pressure difference
between a large surface high over the Ohio River Valley/Appalachians
and newly formed Tropical Storm Beta meandering westward closer to
the Texas coast. Seas to rebuild over the weekend and remain
elevated through early next week. Small Craft Advisories are now in
effect starting late tonight. A chance of showers over the weekend.
