southeast flow is then expected to develop late Wednesday and persist
through late Friday. Thus, a Small Craft Advisory will likely be
needed for the open Gulf waters beginning tomorrow night due to these

NEAR TERM /Now Through Wednesday/...A large upper trough over the
eastern conus will move east over the western Atlantic, while a
broad, very weak upper ridge over the southern plains shifts
eastward over our area on Wednesday. Surface high pressure to our
west, currently centered over east Texas, will also move eastward
reaching our forecast area by late tonight and then shifting east
of our area on Wednesday. As a result, the dry and cool conditions
will continue through midweek. Low temperatures tonight will be 3
to 7 degrees below normal, ranging from 30 to 35 degrees most
locations, with the exception of the upper 30s to lower along the
beaches. Plenty of sunshine will allow the high temperatures to be
2 to 6 degrees above normal, ranging from 62 to 66 degrees. /22

SHORT TERM /Wednesday night Through Friday night/...Wednesday and
Thursday will be dry as surface high pressure moves across our
area. By Thursday night into Friday, a period of return flow
ahead of the next system. Mid to upper level synoptic flow will be
driven by an expansive upper ridge centered over the
Bahamas/Western Atlantic. To our west, a deep longwave trough will
dig into the southern plains. This trough will become the major
player for Saturdays weather. Over our area, southwesterly winds
aloft between the trough and strengthening ridge will lead to
steady moisture return from the Gulf as several shortwaves move
through the flow. At the surface, high pressure continues to
build off the Mid-Atlantic coast leading to surface southerly
flow. This will allow for low-level moisture to surge northward
behind an advancing warm front. The presence of increasing
moisture and weak disturbances aloft will lead to increasing rain
chances beginning late Thursday night. The majority of the precip
will be focused west of I-65 where isentropic upglide will be
slightly stronger.

By Friday and Friday night, the advancing warm front will begin
to move inland. Showers and storms will continue to increase in
coverage as the isentropic upglide increases. As the warm front
moves northward, a few thunderstorms could be possible as
instability begins to increase. With ML-CAPE values ranging around
500 J/KG, a frontal boundary and deep layer shear of 35 to 40
knots present, storms will need to be monitored for a possible
organization and a severe potential. Storms will continue through
the night Friday with the main rain axis shifting northward with
the warm front. We will also have to monitor the potential for
advection fog as warm moist air moves over the cooler nearshore
shelf waters and bays. It is still a little too early to nail
down the timing on any fog potential but will likely be added to
the grids in a later package.

Temperatures will be on the steady rise Wednesday night through
Friday night. Lows Wednesday night will range from the upper 40s
along the coast to upper 30s inland. By Thursday and Friday
temperatures will return to the 60s for lows and low 70s for highs
as moisture returns to the area. Highs will be mitigated by
increasing cloud coverage Thursday and Friday. BB/03

LONG TERM /Saturday Through Tuesday/...Active weather pattern will
begin on Saturday with a possible multi-hazard significant weather
event. This active will continue through the weekend and into the
beginning of next week as several storm systems move into the
weekend. Like yesterday, I plan to break up the forecast
discussions into sections given the multiple hazards possibly at
play.

Synoptic...Unfortunately model guidance continues to paint a
rough picture for Saturday as the aforementioned upper trough
digs into the Arklatex region Saturday. A stout mid to upper jet
of 100-120 knots at 500mb will round the base and eject over the
Mid- Mississippi and Southeast regions on Saturday. As this jet
ejects, the trough will take on a negative tilt and in response
quick surface cyclogenesis will occur over the Mid-Mississippi
valley. The surface low will then proceed to track northeast into
western Tennessee as it deepens. An adjacent cold front will
quickly surge southeast into our area during the day Saturday.
Given the strong forcing for ascent over a very moist area with
PWATS ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches, confidence in heavy rain and
the potential for severe storms is growing. For more information
on the severe potential see the severe section below.

By Saturday night, the trough will begin to lift out of our area
as the cold front stalls over the central Gulf. Sunday appears to
be the only clear day in the long term as the upper level high is
stunted to our southeast. Unfortunately, the high makes a strong
rebound as southwesterly flow aloft quickly returns and the
surface front surges back north over our area. Showers and storms
will return with the boundary as several shortwaves move through
the flow aloft. These shortwaves will likely lead to several
rounds of rain through the beginning of next week. Precip could be
heavy at times as PWAT values continue to range around 1.5 to 2
inches. Temperatures will remain mild through the extended
forecast with lows near 60 and highs in the low 70s. BB/03

Severe...As mentioned above, confidence in the severe potential
from the deep upper trough on Saturday is increasing. As a result,
the SPC has placed the whole area under a 30% risk for Day 5.
Models continue to highlight a large warm sector across most of
Alabama on saturday with ML-Cape values likely increasing to
around 1000 J/KG. The main caveat to this would be any ongoing
storms in the warm sector limiting the amount of instability. The
second main caveat will be that the bulk of the forcing will be
displaced to our northwest and timing is slightly different with
the GFS model with more of a mid-morning event vs the Euro being
late afternoon event. The forcing being off to our northwest could
lead to storms struggling in the highly sheared environment;
however, it could also lead to a more discreet storm mode.
All of these details are still way too far out to determine and
will most certainly change over the coming days.

Even with that in mind, a stout 55 to 70 knot 850 mb jet will
strengthen over the warm sector and Bulk shear values increasing
to 50 to 60 Knots will lead to likely organized mixed storm
modes. A QLCS will also likely develop along and just ahead of the
cold front. Given the low level jet, low level hodographs will
likely be long and curved leading to a threat of damaging winds
and tornadoes. We will have to continue to monitor this potential
throughout the week. BB/03

Hydrology...Minor flooding continues for several rivers in
southeast Mississippi and Southwest Alabama. Most rivers will be
cresting within the next day or so; however, the upcoming pattern
is supportive of several rounds of rain through next week. PWAT
values will range from 1.5 to 2 inches through the weekend leading
to potentially heavy rainfall over already saturated grounds.
Several of our mainstream rivers are already swollen and any heavy
precip within the basins could lead to continued flooding. We
will have to monitor the rivers closely as the details become
clearer. 03/BB

MARINE...A light to moderate northerly wind flow will shift to the
northeast and decrease as high pressure builds in from the west. A
moderate to strong east to southeast flow is expected to develop
late Wednesday through late Friday as high pressure shifts east to
the eastern seaboard. A moderate to strong southerly flow can be
expected by early Saturday ahead of another cold front approaching
from the west. In the wake of the front a moderate west to northwest
flow can be expected late Saturday into Sunday. /22
