.PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 520 AM CDT Sat Apr 18 2020/

NEAR TERM UPDATE /Now Through Tonight/...A weak upper shortwave
currently triggering thunderstorm activity over the northern Gulf
moves rapidly east overnight, reaching the Southeast Atlantic
coast by 12Z this morning. Meanwhile, a frontal boundary currently
extending from the Ohio Valley southwest into eastern Texas (per
latest surface obs) surges southeastward towards the local area.
Preceding the front and upper shortwave passage, weak onshore flow
across the central Gulf coast is helping moisture rebound with
dewpoints rising into the low to mid 60s. As a result, we see a
narrow swath of instability nose its way inland along the coast
this morning, with SBCAPE values increasing to the 500-1000 J/kg
range by sunrise generally along and south of I-10. The upper
shortwave, coupled with a moistening and destabilizing boundary
layer, will support showers and possibly a few storms across the
area tonight and Saturday.

While rain chances initially overspread the entire area this
morning, focus will shift to the coast during afternoon and evening
hours as the front makes its way to the coast and daytime heating
aids in further destabilization of the boundary layer. Additionally,
guidance suggests better 700-500 mb lapse rates (~7.0 C/km)
overspreading the coast during late afternoon and evening hours.
Provided all of these ingredients come together, along with a
progged ~50 knots of deep-layer westerly shear, cannot rule out a
strong thunderstorm or two along the coast during this time. Primary
threats would be gusty straight- line winds and possibly some small
hail. The Storm Prediction Center has outlooked the Gulf Coast in a
Marginal Risk of severe storms for this potential. Activity along
the coast tapers after sunset as heating shuts down. However, by
that time, high pressure begins building into the western Atlantic
and eastern Gulf, pushing the stalled front back northward. More
showers and storms are expected to develop along the front as it
retreats, with the best chances shifting to areas along and north of
Highway 84 after midnight tonight.

High temps Saturday range from low to mid 70s over interior portions
of southeast Mississippi and southwest Alabama, and upper 70s to low
80s farther southeast and along the coast. Lows Saturday night
remain mild due to the greater boundary layer moisture content, only
dipping into the low 60s inland and upper 60s to around 70 along the
coast. 49/13

SHORT TERM /Sunday Through Monday night/...Another episode of
severe weather is expected to impact the forecast area Sunday
morning into Sunday night, while heavy rainfall may also bring
flooding concerns across interior portions of our region.

Short range model solutions remain in fairly good agreement with
quickly bringing a shortwave trough from the vicinity of the
central/southern Plains early Sunday morning to the Lower Missouri
Valley/ArkLaTex region by early Sunday evening, then eastward
across the Tennessee Valley and adjacent central Gulf Coast states
late Sunday night into early Monday morning. An associated surface
low pressure system located over southwest OK early Sunday morning
should also advance eastward across the Lower Mississippi Valley
by early Sunday evening, then eastward into MS/AL Sunday evening.
A warm front stretching across southern portions of our forecast
area early Sunday morning should lift northward over the CWA
through the morning ahead of these approaching features. Surface
dewpoints are forecast to rise into the upper 60s to lower 70s
around the region, while surface temperatures also warm into the
upper 70s to lower 80s. A very warm and unstable airmass will be
in place around the region by midday with MLCAPE values likely
ranging as high as 2000-2500 J/KG. Deep layer flow will strengthen
across our forecast area through the day ahead of the approaching
shortwave trough. A southwesterly 850 mb jet also increases to
45-55 knots around our area Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening.
Mid level lapse rates also look to steepen to around 7 C/KM over
the area. Scattered to numerous showers and a few thunderstorms
will develop over the area in the warm advection regime Sunday
morning, and may have to monitor for a couple of strong storms
through the morning with this pattern, especially across interior
southeast MS and southwest AL along the advancing warm front.

A more substantial severe threat likely develops over our area by
mid to late afternoon as larger scale ascent spreads over our
region ahead of the approaching shortwave trough and surface low,
and as deep layer flow also strengthens in the moist and unstable
airmass. Forecast soundings indicate a low level inversion
gradually eroding through the afternoon, favoring convective
growth, with the environment favorable for supercells and linear
bowing segments and an associated threat of damaging winds over
70 mph. 0-1 km effective storm relative helicity values between
200-300 m2/s2 also favor tornadoes, especially during the
afternoon and early evening before surface winds veer more
southwesterly. Large hail will also be possible with strong
updrafts courtesy of the steep mid level lapse rates. The severe
threat will probably come to an end over our eastern zones by
shortly after midnight as dynamics quickly shift east of the
region.

Heavy rainfall will also be a concern, especially over interior
areas as multiple rounds of showers and storms spread over
this portion of the region Sunday morning into late Sunday
evening. The GFS, ECMWF, and UKMET solutions have been
consistently indicating the highest QPF over interior southwest
and south central AL, with the UKMET showing the heaviest rainfall
amounts. Our latest forecast continues to indicate potential for
2-4" of rain with locally higher amounts especially along and
north of the Hwy 84 corridor Sunday and Sunday night, and have
opted to issue a Flash Flood Watch for Choctaw, Clarke, Wilcox,
Monroe, Conecuh, Butler, and Crenshaw counties where confidence in
heavy rainfall and a potential flash flood threat is highest.

Finally, gusty southerly winds develop during the day Sunday, with
gusts up to 30-35 mph possible. A Wind Advisory may become
necessary across the region. A HIGH risk of rip currents will also
continue along the local beaches into at least Monday morning.

Dry Monday and Monday night. /21

EXTENDED TERM /Tuesday Through Friday/...Quiet weather will
continue on Tuesday into early Wednesday as broad upper troughing
slowly moves east across the eastern US followed by the quick
passage of a short-wave upper ridge. At the surface, high pressure
slides eastward leading to drier conditions over the area early
in the medium range. Highs will be in the upper 70s to low 80s but
with drier conditions will lead to a more comfortable feeling.
The next system will arrive on early Thursday morning as another
rather quick, progressive southern stream upper trough ejects
eastward over the Mid and Lower Mississippi valley. A region of
enhanced ascent supports chance to likely PoPs Wednesday night
which continues to increase early Thursday AM. The upper trough
could take on a more negative tilt and with the potential
strengthening of a low level speed max coincident environmental
instability may bring another window for strong to severe weather
impacts. Exact details on this system will come into better focus
on later forecasts. Forecasters will be monitoring this system
closely. Once this system passes, appears will be drying out again
as we head into next weekend. Temperatures will be warm through
the second half of the week. /10/03

MARINE...A westerly flow develops this morning as a front
approaches the marine area from the northwest. A brief period of
northwest flow is possible this morning as the front drifts
offshore. A light onshore flow returns late Saturday and increases
Sunday into Sunday night ahead of the next weather system. A Small
Craft Advisory will likely be needed late in the weekend with
increasing winds and seas. In the wake of the Sunday system, winds
quickly turn offshore and diminish Monday. A light to moderate
easterly flow develops Tuesday. /13
