NEAR TERM /Now Through Thursday night/...A surface wave of low
pressure is located over the northwestern Gulf of Mexico off the
southeast TX coast early this morning, while a warm front extends
east-southeast from this feature across the north central Gulf of
Mexico. A very warm and moist airmass is in place south of the warm
front, with several Gulf observations indicating surface dewpoints
in the lower 70s. Shortwave impulses embedded within the southwest
flow aloft are meanwhile lifting into LA, MS, and western AL early
this morning, while a low level jet is also strengthening over these
same areas. Large scale ascent provided by the aforementioned
shortwave impulses and low level warm advection has resulted in the
development of numerous to widespread rain showers over much of the
Deep South early this morning, with radar showing increased rain
coverage spreading across much of our interior as of 4 AM CST.
A very moist southwest flow pattern aloft will become established
across much of the Lower Mississippi and Tennessee Valley regions
today and tonight in advance of an upper level trough that will
deepen over the southern Rocky Mountains and adjacent southern
plains states. The deep layer southerly to southwest flow will set
up a pattern conducive for very heavy rainfall and flooding from
southern LA into central MS and northern AL today. Our forecast area
will remain located to the southeast of the largest scale forcing
today. However, a deeply moist airmass with unseasonably high
precipitable water values up to around 1.7" to 1.8" will extend into
portions of southeast MS and interior southwest AL, favoring
potential for locally heavy rainfall across these areas through
tonight (associated with rounds of showers and a few storms moving
across this part of the area today and also with a narrow QLCS
moving in this evening, more on this below). High resolution
convection allowing models including the WRF-ARW, HRRR, and RAP
indicate potential of storm total rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches,
with perhaps some localized totals over 3 inches to clip across our
far northwestern zones through tonight. We will highlight the
locally heavy rain potential and an associated limited flooding risk
roughly northwest of a Beaumont, MS to Coffeeville, AL line in our
Hazardous Weather Outlook product and local graphics.
The warm front located over the northern Gulf of Mexico early this
morning is forecast to lift northward across the forecast area late
this morning into early this afternoon as the surface low moves into
northern portions of MS. Surface dewpoints are subsequently expected
to rise into the upper 60s to around 70 degrees late this morning
into early this afternoon and persist into this evening. Although
surface heating will be limited today due to cloudy skies and high
precipitation chances, the deep low level moisture content will
allow the airmass to become modestly unstable with afternoon MLCAPE
values rising to 500-800 J/KG across much of southeast MS and
perhaps into adjacent portions of southwest AL by this afternoon.
Strong deep layer shear will also be present today, with short range
guidance in agreement with indicating low level directional shear
this afternoon across southeast MS and southwest AL. 0-1 km storm
relative helicity values will likely range between 200-300 m2/s2
over these areas. We will need to closely monitor discrete cells
that develop across the region this afternoon into early this
evening for damaging wind and tornado potential, especially over
southeast MS and adjacent southwest AL, where the better instability
will be located. A narrow QLCS developing from south central LA
through central MS this afternoon should eventually move into
southeast MS and adjacent southwest AL during the evening hours, but
may gradually weaken with time this evening as instability gradually
wanes. There still could be a conditional damaging wind and tornado
threat with this line, at least into the early evening. A secondary
zone of modest instability (MLCAPE 500-800 J/KG) could advect into
the northwest FL panhandle and adjacent south central AL from around
9 PM to 3 AM or so late this evening/tonight, so a low end severe
threat may continue with any cells that develop across this portion
of our CWA during this time frame. /21
SHORT TERM /Friday Through Saturday night/...A line of showers
and thunderstorms will likely be ongoing across eastern portions
of the area Friday morning. There is a marginal risk of severe
storms Friday morning for the potential of damaging winds. Rain
chances continue through the day as an upper trough and secondary
cold front approach from the west, although the severe threat
will have ended early in the day. The rain will move east of the
area Friday night as the cold front moves through, bringing a
drier and cooler airmass to the area for the weekend.
LONG TERM /Sunday Through Wednesday/...Surface high pressure will
move east across the area through Monday, maintaining a dry and
cool pattern. A reinforcing frontal boundary moves east across
the area on Tuesday, bringing a chance for showers before drying
out again on Wednesday. /13
MARINE...A moderate to strong southerly flow and building seas can
be expected today as a low pressure system approaches the area. Seas
will then decrease Friday before a cold front crosses the marine
area Friday night into Saturday. Strong offshore flow will follow for
much of the weekend. Winds will decrease, becoming light and more
westerly by late Sunday afternoon as high pressure builds over the
region. Light westerly flow will then persist into early next
week.
