NEAR TERM UPDATE /Now Through Friday night/...Cold front has
pushed east of the area and is aligned over the southeast US.
Scattered post frontal showers continue to stream from the coastal
waters up across the northwest FL panhandle. Latest guidance
continues to show this precipitation shrinking in areal coverage
and shifting southward with little in the way of precipitation
left over the land zones by this evening. Meanwhile, a large,
strong ridge of surface high pressure, with central pressures
1035-1040 MB, expands over the mid/upper Mississippi and Ohio
River Valleys through Friday. The ridge slides east across the
Appalachians and Mid-Atlantic Friday night.
Colder tonight with lows dipping down into the lower to mid 30s
over the interior northwest with lower to mid 40s east of I-65,
southward to the coast. Highs Friday mid to upper 50s interior to
closer to 60 over the coastal zones. Clear skies and light to calm
winds Friday night favor excellent radiational cooling processes
with lows sinking into the lower to mid 30s for most areas north
of I-10 with patchy frost also being possible. Lower 40s for much
of the immediate coast. /10
EXTENDED TERM /Saturday Through Thursday/...Generally zonal flow
aloft will comprise the extended term period for the northern
Gulf coast; however, a few shortwaves will move across the area
beginning Sunday and continue into early next week. Uncertainty
will then increase by midweek as model solutions diverge. At the
surface, high pressure over the eastern CONUS will begin to shift
eastward, with a low pressure system moving up the east coast of
Texas. A warm front associated with this low will also progress
northward over the Gulf. By Monday, the low will be centered over
the Plains, with the warm front progressing over the ARKLATEX
region as well as southern AL and FL panhandle. The low pressure
system will then progress northeast over the Great Lakes region
early Tuesday, with the associated cold front advancing towards
the southeastern CONUS during this time. FROPA is then expected
over the region Wednesday, with high pressure building back in
over the central CONUS in its wake early Thursday.
A dry period will continue into Saturday as high pressure
persists over the eastern CONUS. Rain chances will return as the
warm front lifts over the Gulf Sunday and then over the region
early next week. A continued wet pattern will then be the story
with FROPA Wednesday into Thursday. In addition, model guidance
does show some instability Tuesday when the northern Gulf coast is
under the warm sector; therefore, kept slight chances of
thunderstorms early Tuesday and through the afternoon. Thunder
chances will decrease into the evening with the loss of daytime
heating.
Lastly, temperatures will be on a warming trend through Tuesday,
then once again decrease midweek with FROPA. Highs Saturday will
be in the lower 60s, with mid 70s expected by Tuesday. Highs will
then drop to the upper 50s to lower 60s for Thursday. Lows will
follow a similar trend, beginning in the 40s inland to around 50
degrees along the coast Sunday morning. Lows will gradually
increase to be in the lower 60s on Tuesday. By Thursday morning,
lows will decrease to be in the 40s inland to around 50 degrees
along the coast once again. /26
MARINE...A large and strong ridge of surface high pressure
with central pressures from 1035 to 1040 MB over the northern and
central Plains states expands east of the Mississippi River Valley
the next couple days. With the axis of this strong high to the
north, a moderate to strong offshore flow is favored which brings
elevated seas in the near term. Hazardous navigation to smaller
marine craft is maintained with small craft advisory criteria likely
to be met for southern Mobile Bay, adjacent MS Sound and out over
the open Gulf waters. Winds diminish and become more easterly into
the weekend turning more onshore the first of next week. Chances of
showers return Saturday night and remain in the forecast into next
week. A few storms possible by Tuesday. /10
