NEAR TERM UPDATE AND SHORT TERM /Now Through Thursday night/...
Currently over the Southeast, the latest surface observations
show that a weak surface front has slowly pushed to a rough KSEM
to KHBG line at 2pm/20Z. The front is moving south in response to
a series of mid level shortwaves move north on the north side of
an upper ridge beginning to build north from over the western
Caribbean. Isolated to scattered rain-showers were streaming
northeast across the forecast area, with nary a lightning strike
indicated on the lightning plots at this time. Latest SPC
analysis shows decent surface based instability south of the front
(500-1000J/kg) for thunderstorm development. Bulk Shear values
are modest coincident with the instability (0-6km/35-50kts), but
based in the upper half of the layer, limiting its effectiveness
in strong to severe storm development. The forecast area should
see an increase in the coverage and strength of the precipitation,
but any strong to marginally severe storms should be limited.
Tonight into Wednesday, a digging upper trough over the Desert
Southwest and upper ridge building north over the Eastern Seaboard
will amplify the upper pattern. Guidance is still trying to
advertise the surface front moving southeast, then stalling
between I-10 and Highway 84 tonight. For tonight, have kept
mainly rain-showers with a thunderstorm or two over land areas
decreasing in coverage Wednesday morning. Closer to the coast,
with persistent advection fog conditions, have issued a dense fog
advisory for our AL/Fl coastal counties tonight, along with
Escambia and Covington Co, Al. Above seasonal temperatures
continue for tonight due to the southerly flow and persistent
upper ridge, with low temperatures ranging from the upper 50s
north of Highway 84 to low 60s south.
For Wednesday through Wednesday night, the chance of strong to
severe storms remains the biggest item to deal with. As the
Southeast upper ridge builds north, it will direct the Southwestern
upper low northeast as it crosses the Plains and the Mississippi
River. Best jet dynamics remain well west, then north of the
forecast area. With the increasing low level jet, the stalled
surface front moves north Wednesday, with the Southeast coming
under increasing warm and moist southerly flow. Guidance is
advertising MuCapes building into the 500-1000 J/Kg range in the
afternoon and early evening well ahead of an approaching cold
front with Bulk Shear Values rising back into the 60-75knot range.
With the passage of the cold front beginning well after midnight,
the better upper support has moved well north of the forecast
area. Enough instability, shear and upper support remains, though,
during the evening/early overnight hours for some strong to
severe storms ahead of a squall line coincident with the front,
but the chance decreases quickly after midnight Wednesday night as
the front moves across the forecast area. SPC has pared back the
Slight Risk for severe storms to west of a Saucier, Mississippi to
Camden, Alabama line.
Looking at fog, with the low level flow increasing late morning
into the afternoon, and fog over the land should quickly rise and
mix out in the morning hours. Marine areas are expected to see
conditions favorable for advection fog lasting through the morning
into the afternoon.
The front will move over and southeast of the forecast area
Thursday into Thursday night, ushering in a significantly cooler
airmass. Precipitation is expected to last into the afternoon over
Southeastern portions of the forecast area and the marine zones
Temperatures ahead of the front are expected to remain well above
seasonal norms, with highs in the mid to upper 70s expected
Wednesday, upper 50s northwestern portions of the area behind the
front to low to mid 60s southeast of the front. Thursday into
Thursday night will see a cool-down, with high temperatures
Thursday ranging from the upper 50s northwest of the Alabama River
to upper 60s southeast of I-65. Low temperatures Thursday night
are expected to drop into the mid 30s to around 40 as colder air
behind the front moves over the forecast area.

EXTENDED /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...Zonal flow aloft early
Friday will give way to a brief period of ridging through Saturday
afternoon. Zonal flow will then return early Sunday to round out the
weekend. Models also indicate the passage of a few shortwaves late
weekend and into early next week, but much model disagreement exists
during this time. At the surface, high pressure will build over the
eastern CONUS. By Saturday morning, this high pressure will begin to
shift eastward, with a low pressure system developing over southern
Texas Sunday morning. A warm front associated with this low will
then begin to advance northward over the Gulf Sunday morning, with
FROPA over the Gulf coast expected Monday morning. Another low
pressure system over the central Plains will eventually progress
over the Great Lakes region on Monday, with a cold front draped over
the Ohio Valley and down through the ARKLATEX region by Tuesday
morning.
Expecting dry conditions and clear skies through much of the
weekend. Clouds will then increase Sunday, with the return of rain
chances into early Sunday morning. This unsettled pattern will then
continue through early next week. At this time, confidence is low
regarding any thunderstorm development Sunday into Monday. Models
show little to no instability over the area during this time. Thus,
did not include thunder for now; however, this will continue to be
monitored.
Temperatures will start off below normal for late week, but then be
on an warming trend and actually be well above normal early next
week. Highs Friday afternoon are expected to be in the 50s, with
overnight lows into Saturday morning in the 30s for areas inland to
around 40 degrees right along the coast. Lows will then gradually
increase to be in the lower 60s Tuesday morning, with afternoon
highs in the mid 70s. /26
MARINE...Light to at times moderate southerly flow is expected on
the west side of a low level ridge stretching west over the Gulf
of Mexico into Wednesday. Advection fog over cooler coastal bays
and near shore waters is expected to continue into Wednesday
before southerly flow increases ahead of an approaching cold
front. The cold front will cross area waters Thursday into
Thursday evening, with strong offshore flow following. A Small
Craft Advisory will likely be needed after the frontal passage.

RD CAUSING NUMEROUS SNAPPED SOFTWOOD PINES.
AS THE TORNADO PROGRESSED NORTHEAST, WIDTH
INCREASED TO APPROXIMATELY 200 YARDS WITH A
CLEAR CONVERGENT PATTERN OF SNAPPED
SOFTWOODS. AS THE TORNADO APPROACHED PIAVE
CHURCH RD, IT APPEARS TO HAVE WEAKENED
CAUSING SEVERAL UPROOTED HARDWOODS AND A FEW
SNAPPED TO UPROOTED SOFTWOODS. A FEW HOMES
HAD MINOR ROOF DAMAGE LIKELY BY THE OUTER
CIRCULATION AND RFD. THE TORNADO SHORTLY
LIFTED AFTER CROSSING PIAVE CHURCH RD BUT
NOT BEFORE UPROOTING A COUPLE MORE HARDWOODS
AND REMOVING A TIN ROOF FROM A MOBILE HOME
