.NEAR TERM UPDATE/Monday and Monday night/...A surface ridge of
high pressure will slowly build into the forecast area from the
west Monday and Monday night. This will maintain the light to
occasionally moderate northerly flow across the area, and allow
colder and drier air from the north to continue to advect into the
region. At the same time, a very deep mid/upper trof will be
digging into the southeast, with 500 MB temperatures dropping to
around -23C over our northern counties by late Monday night. With
this, forecast surface temperatures are expected to be much lower
than normal for this time of the year through the near term period.
Highs on Monday only in the mid to upper 40s across the area, with
lows Monday night ranging from the mid and upper 20s over nearly
all interior locations to the lower 30s along the coast (some barrier
islands in the mid 30s). /12

will diminish somewhat this evening, but still likely remain in
the 10 to 15 knot range overnight and on into the day on Sunday.

PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 401 PM CST Sun Jan 19 2020/

NEAR TERM /Now Through Monday/...MSLP gradient associated
with surface high pressure building into the region behind the
overnight/early morning cold front passage continues to result in
breezy conditions around the region this afternoon. Some locations
along the coast have gusted up to 35 mph at times today. Wind speeds
should gradually come down in speed this afternoon, and
observational trends indicate that we will be able to let the Wind
Advisory near the coast expire on schedule at 4 PM CST.

A very dry deep layer airmass will continue to settle across the
north central Gulf Coast region through Monday on the base of a
longwave trough spanning the eastern CONUS. A large surface ridge
of high pressure over the central and northern Plains will
continue to build southeastward toward the Upper Midwest and Mid-
Mississippi and Tennessee Valley regions into late Monday. Aside
from a few passing high level clouds, mostly clear skies, dry
weather, and below normal temperatures will persist across our
forecast area through Monday. A light freeze is still expected
across most of the region tonight, except for the barrier islands
and beaches. Overnight lows will range in the mid 20s to around 30
degrees, except for mid 30s along the above mentioned beaches/barrier
islands. Highs Monday only look to reach into the mid to upper 40s
across the region. /21

SHORT TERM /Monday night Through Wednesday night/...COLD, just
outright COLD.

For this warm air loving forecaster the short term is less than
ideal. A expansive upper trough will part over the eastern US
while upper ridging builds over the central US. A stout shortwave
embedded within the upper trough will bring a reinforcing shot of
drier air and cold temperatures on Tuesday. High pressure at the
surface centered over Iowa will allow for northernly winds to
persist through Tuesday. By Wednesday, the upper trough and
surface high will shift eastward as the next trough enters the
central Plains. With high pressure in place, conditions will
remain dry during the short term forecast.

Temperatures will be cold on Tuesday and Wednesday. Potentially
the coldest period of the winter season and of the new year. Lows
will be near freezing at the immediate coast with mid 20s inland.
Highs will struggle to get into the upper 40s on Tuesday as a
stiff north wind will likely keep cold air advecting in. By
Wednesday, highs will return to the 50s as the flow relaxes and
becomes more easterly. Nonetheless, two nights of extended periods
below freezing is likely. BB/03

LONG TERM /Thursday Through Sunday/...On Thursday, an upper
trough over the central US will begin to progress eastward. Winds
will become more southeasterly as return flow begins ahead of the
approaching system. Moisture will continue to flow into the area
leading to increasing chances for precipitation. Models are still
in some disagreement in the eventual evolution of the upper
trough and adjacent surface low with on solution with a more
southern track vs the other more northern track. Despite the
differences, rain will be likely through the day Friday. Given
the short period of return flow, instability will be meager and
that is being generous. Mentioned a few rumbles of thunder but not
expecting anything above that at this time. Beyond Friday, drier
air will return for next weekend. Temperatures will be a little
warmer than the short term but only momentarily as cooler air
returns behind the upper system. BB/03

MARINE...Strong northerly winds will continue through Tuesday
with a Small Craft Advisory in effect through Monday. The small
craft may need to be extended into Tuesday but will hold off for
now. Waves will remain elevated through tuesday before diminishing
slightly as the surface ridge moves east and winds become more
easterly. The next system will arrive on Thursday as winds become
southerly and the chance for showers and potentially a few storms
increases ahead of an approaching cold front. BB/03
